He was supposed to strike the rock, so striking twice wasn't the problem. It was other things including not speaking to the rock but my point was that God killed Moses because of that.
Your point is that God killed Moses ?

isn’t sin what kills mankind and isn’t God the giver of life ? I think your mistaking God with this angel set over Moses law

“Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭23:20-21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

God doesn’t kill his people that’s satans goal and sin is the murder weapon God has never ever instructed mankind to sin and die and never will

Moses sinned sin is death he announced it throughout his law only someone sinless is going to live forever hence , Jesus Christ the only one

Moses also lived in glory when Christ came

“And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elijah: Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭9:30-31‬ ‭KJV‬‬

sin is what kills man God has been warning us since the beginning and tonthe end of the Bible is the same warning sin is death so we gotta repent and let Christs holiness cover our shame that’s how we live

This is long but worth the read:
uh yeah If Moses had just spoken tonthe rock he would have then sanctified Gods command to him to speak to the rock

“If we look at the context Moses was told to hit a rock,”

where are you reading Moses commanded to strike the rock I sure can’t find it in the scriptures you quoted? If I’m missing that part can you quote where God commanded him to hit the rock ?

and context works like this , this is how we can know what it says

“And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock:

so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him. And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.”
‭‭Numbers‬ ‭20:7-11‬ ‭

where is he commanded to strike the rock ? Doesnt God tell him to speak to it and then Moses doesn’t obey but instead speaks to the people and strikes the rock again if I missed the part where God told him to strike the rock can you quote that one part ?

Again, the context of the Entire Bible is Spiritual Circumcision, the act that physical circumcision represents (later represented in water baptism for all Nations to participate), established by Abraham in Genesis chapter 17. Let's not overlook the obvious.

that’s a reference to Moses stroking the rock 2 times rather than speaking to it

he was frustrated with the people’s constant complaining and didn’t sanctify Gods word when he didn’t speak to the rock , but instead took it on himself to strike it two times

this seems Not important until you realize the rock was Christ then it becomes more clear what it was Moses actually did to transgress
CORRECT :Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink.
For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.

Moses was commanded to strike the Rock the First Coming to IT = Christ being struck by God
“Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!” declares the LORD Almighty.
“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones. Zech 13:7

Then Jesus said to them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of Me. For it is written:
I will strike the Shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ Matt 26:31

the Second time(Second Coming of CHRIST) Moses approached the Rock he was only to speak to the Rock,
instead, out of anger, Moses again struck the Rock - and this sin of disobedience kept Moses from entering the promised land.

Nor did He enter heaven to offer Himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. Otherwise, Christ would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world.
But now He has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment, so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many;
and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him.
Hebrews 9:28

with the circumcision, it was Zipporah who circumcised Gershom, not Moses. Was it her failure to do so first rather than Moses?
Although she did call Moses 'a bloody husband'!

And threw the foreskin at his feet.

I think she was a bit angry.

does anyone remember the movie The Ten Commandments, with Charles Heston as Moses. I dont remember Aaron having much of a role in that movie, but in the Bible, it was Aaron doing all the speaking. Because Moses didnt speak very well!

But in that overblown movie, it was Charles Heston being all God like and doing all the speaking! So much for Hollywood.

Im not sure what the Hebews were meant to actually do with the foreskins after they are circumcised.
Its not like God instructed them to keep them in a box or something.

This is an interesting post, and I like it. As for the "bloody husband" . . . it seems wise to think of our "bloody" relationship with Christ. Again, physical circumcision is a bloody event that reflects the Spiritual Circumcision clearly noted in Colossians 2:9-15.

What was at stake, as it seems, is Moses being cut off from the "Covenant Family," or, the Family of Circumcision. And what is this "Family?" It is the Family of True Believers whose Hearts have been made right with God.

Don't miss this (all friends in Christ)!
Romans 2:27-29 NLT - "In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles who keep God's law will condemn you Jews who are circumcised and possess God's law but don't obey it. For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by God's Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people."

Moses was apparently in violation of being cut off from God because, as it seems, he did not circumcise his son. This is the modern equivalent to someone professing True Faith in Christ, yet refusing water baptism. And whoever refuses public water baptism is not showing True Faith. Imagine what was a stake on the Day of Pentecost? Life itself. Many were likely killed because of their public display of water baptism (the public recanting of Judaism), leaving their wives and children without a husband and father. Water baptism was a really, really big deal back in the day.

Let's stay focused on the text in the OP . . . it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

is it Moses that gets cut off or his son Gershom?
Is it the fathers responsibility or the mothers? I suppose the sons cant circumcise themselves, as they are only babies.

Nothing. The foreskin (that which is filthy) is the physical representation of the Sinful Nature, hence Colossians 2:11:

Colossians 2:11 NLT - "When you came to Christ, you were "circumcised," but not by a physical procedure. Christ performed a spiritual circumcision--the cutting away of your sinful nature."

This is a wonderful question . . . and it seems that because Moses' life was at stake, it would seem that Moses would be cut off (and likely his son), for at this time, children were still held responsible for their father's sin. This separation of responsibility would come later in the Old Testament law. (Eze 33:12-20 shows the disdain of such a transition).

I read that mohels (Jewish people who circumcise) bury the foreskins.

Usually at hospitals body parts get labelled as bio hazard waste and are burned. But I dont know how much of it is really used for something else, if its not diseased.

I'm not an expert on the process, but isn't the skin simply folded back (to provide that heart-shaped appearance?) Heart-shape . . . God is simply unbelievable in what He does, or should I say, have us do (to reflect His Core Doctrine of the Bible . . . Circumcision of the Heart).

Sorry, I just remembered that the foreskin, in this instance, was literally removed and touched the feet of Moses. It was removed. This bloody touching of the feet, could it be in future reference to the piercing of Christ's feet?

where is that scripture ? It seems and I’m actually asking that I can’t find that scripture.

eas Moses ever told to strike the rock with his rod ? I could have just missed it but to me he’s told explicitly “ speak to the rock in the sight of the people and he shall give his waters “

again I could be missing the part where Moses was commanded by God to strike the rock but I’m coming up empty finding that verse my ears are hearing the event itself

I sort of am just reading this part am I missing where he’s told to strike the rock ? Or are you saying what Moses did not being commanded to do it is a foretelling of Christ being smote ? I can see that part of that’s what you are saying for sure

but the question of what Moses was told to do seems like I’m only finding this . So the situation is the people are harping on Moses and Aaron like always

“And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron. And the people chode with Moses, and spake, saying, Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the Lord!

And why have ye brought up the congregation of the Lord into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there? And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place?

it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.

( so here’s where I must be missing some other part I agree that this all happened )

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.

( so far God told him to speak to the rock in front of the people and this is what Moses does )

And Moses took the rod from before the Lord, as he commanded him.

And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.”
‭‭Numbers‬ ‭20:2-5, 7-12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I do see the figures your revealing there but I’m nOt seeing anywhere that Moses obeyed there or that he was told to strike the rock.

what I see is Gods goodness and provision . Even though Moses disobeyed being so frustrated with the people , God still gave them the water of life.

Moses was meant to go gather everyone and speak what God told him to the rock , he never said anything to the rock but spoke to the people and snore the rock .

honestly I think it’s all explained there Moses didn’t do what God had told him therefore didn’t sanctify the lords command in sight of the people but acted in frustration as he often did struggle with the peoples unrelenting complaints against he , Aaron and God

I do see the figures but I don’t see anywhere where Moses was ever told to do anything but speak to the rock holding the rod as they always did when miraculous works were afoot

I think what your talking about there regarding the figure of Christs teo conings is really cool though I had never noticed before

the only contention I have is and I’m honestly saying I can’t find the scriptures where Moses is commanded to hit the rock doesn’t mean it isn’t written somewhere but the event itself tells us what Moses was told to do , what Moses did , and the consequences of it

Pilgrimshope, your understanding is sensible and eaqsy to understand. I believe even the errors of Moses ae just that, a lesson for each of us. God bless you.
I couldn’t agree more I think really everything in scripture is meant for our learning and edification.

I think often we just see some things differently in scripture or maybe we have read more of one book and not so much of another and eventually I believe God will bring us around in his time as we press on toward the face and embrace of Jesus Christ when our journey home comes to an end

ive come to actually appreciate opinions and ideas that I don’t necessarily see myself or agree with because doscussion sort of opens up a view that any who participate can grow a bit from if we are willing and don’t think we’re already finished or have everything figured out

I could be wrong it wouldn’t be e first time but in my mind it makes sense and sounds like you also found some of those thoughts in your mind and heart

always a blessing to interact with you I find a lot of worth in almost everything you say here

It is CLEAR from the full VIEW of Scripture: FIRST Coming Exodus 17:1-7 , SECOND Coming Numbers 20:7-12

Then the whole congregation of Israel left the Desert of Sin, moving from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. So the people contended with Moses, “Give us water to drink.”
“Why do you contend with me?” Moses replied. “Why do you test the LORD?”
But the people thirsted for water there, and they grumbled against Moses: “Why have you brought us out of Egypt—to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?”
Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What should I do with these people? A little more and they will stone me!”
And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people and take some of the elders of Israel with you. Take along in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. And when you strike the rock, water will come out of it for the people to drink.”
So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. He named the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled, and because they tested the LORD, saying, “Is the LORD among us or not?”

This FIRST Coming to the ROCK, which is CHRIST, God commands Moses to Strike the Rock and water will come out......
Water flowed from CHRIST when HE was STRUCK

This SECOND Coming to the ROCK God commanded Moses to speak to the ROCK = Numbers 20:7-12

Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals.” So Moses took the rod from before the Lord as He commanded him.
And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?” Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.
Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.”

How many times was CHRIST Struck = ONLY ONCE = Moses committed a grievous sin before GOD.

Many people today are doing the same by violating God's words just as Moses did.

Every word of God is flawless;
He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.
Do not add to His words,
lest He rebuke you and prove you a liar. Proverbs 30:5-6

I testify to everyone who hears the words of prophecy in this book: If anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy city, which are described in this book.
Revelation 22:18-19

Can you SEE that just a little twisting of God's words brought the whole world under sin and dominion of the wicked one.

Yet today many think they can play around with Scripture as if it were a Christian Monopoly game.

Moses could not enter in the promise land because he did not obey a clear command of God, as the leader of the people
and before the ROCK that was representative of CHRIST.

The same ROCK is coming back to destroy the kingdoms of this present Age - Daniel 2:44-45

During the reigns of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed or conquered. It will crush all these kingdoms into nothingness, and it will stand forever. That is the meaning of the rock cut from the mountain, though not by human hands, that crushed to pieces the statue of iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold. The great God was showing the king what will happen in the future. The dream is true, and its meaning is certain.”

Then David spoke to the Lord the words of this song, on the day when the Lord had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. And he said:
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust;

How many times was CHRIST Struck = ONLY ONCE = Moses committed a grievous sin before GOD.

Many people today are doing the same by violating God's words just as Moses did.

Every word of God is flawless;

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
The God of my strength, in whom I will trust;

2 Samuel 22:1-3
ahhh a whole different event in a whole different place I really appreciate you taking the time to leave these scriptures

“Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, Is the Lord among us, or not?”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭17:6-7

yes I do see what your saying now it just clicked why Paul says “ the rock that followed them “

I see what the confusion was I was talking about a different subject as to how Moses had transgressed here in a seperate event

“Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
‭‭Numbers‬ ‭20:1, 7-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

honestly I had never noticed the account at Horeb which was why I felt I was missing the scripture I was searching reagarding the event where he was told to speak to the rock rather than the o Thyroid account I wasn’t aware of awesome stuff brother I appreciate you taking the time and patience there sometimes slow lol. It I get there eventually !

regarding the rock but now it makes sense why he said “ the rock that followed them “ It was the same rock !! That’s really cool

“And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10:4‬ ‭KJV‬‬
