Just wondered what made people hippies.
Was it just a generational thing of the 60s or was it all the stuff in the drugs they took.

Now the children of hippies have grown up I wonder how having hippie parents affected them. Is anyone actually still a hippie these days?

I mean children are no strangers to their own parents doing drugs and acting immature now.

When I think of a hippie, I think of someone with the 70s clothing style (bell-bottom jeans, loose tunic tops, long flat hair (both guys and gals), mustache for guys, etc.) who is also typically a pothead, an activist for of some sort, has sex with multiple partners, etc. I don't think we have a replica of the 70s style hippie nowadays, although there are some similarities. I think doing drugs was probably more commonplace with the activist groups in the 70s; I don't think college age students are potheads/do drugs as much nowadays. I went to a very liberal school and didn't encounter anyone doing drugs.

The "Hippie" generation came about during a turbulant time in our Society here in the US.

After WWII, Americans became far more free to live their lives as they wished. War over, and the "good times" came about. Good paying jobs, great increase of family growth. The "American Dream." White house with a picket fence, two kids and a car in the garage. Fathers were paid well enough for the mothers to stay home and care for the children. For awhile, it was the American Dream!

Then, Politicians and Big Industry began to enter into World Politics. Along came Viet Nam, and everything went to hell! For the first time, war was on TV every day all day long, and Americans were watching their young men die on a daily basis. As well, the Socialist Movement began to take seed and grow. It started in our Universities and Colleges. Young men and women leaving home for the first time, found themselves in a situation where there was no one to tell them what to do, think or say. The Socialists took advantage of this and began their campaign to overthrow America without firing a shot, just as old Nikita said in the UN Assembly.

Racial unrest was growing as blacks were fighting for equal rights. Black Panthers causing havoc on the West Coast, and radical movements all along the East Coast and South. Martin Luther King Jr. rose to be a Leader for Racial Justice, and preached peaceful solutions/demonstrations. He was assassinated, and fuel was added to the racial riot fires burning across America.

Drugs became the "escape" for many, many of our youth. As well, Hollywood and the Music Industry became far more Socialist in their messages through film and song,

Sex, drugs, rock and roll was the "battle cry" of the American Youth.

The birth of the hippie movement in living color through the eyes of the "acid induced haze" of those living it. Their desire was "to be different," Yet, in their effort to be different, they all became memeograph copies of eachother. "Different" only meant anti American. Socialist radical extremism rose to gain control of our Institutions of Higher Learning...........

Many, many died, and died far too young, yet their Legacy is very much alive today. For through their efforts radical socialist extremism now controls our Nations Public Education System from Kindergarten to University. They took charge of our Political Policies and now control our Government. They control Hollywood, and the Print Media and the majority of the Electronic Media. They are now infecting our Congregations with their Socialist ideologies. There is no part of our lives that these Socialists do not have an effect, or do damage to.

I think it was Churchill that said: If you are under 30 and you are not a liberal, you don't have a heart. If you are over 30 and you are not a conservative, you don't have a brain.

I could write100 pages on how the "Hippie Movement" came about and what caused it, but I fought that fight many years ago. It is good to learn from the past, but it is death to "live in the past."

Fix your eyes on Jesus! Live for Him! Do what He has purposed you to do!

Perhaps the movement was based on insight of what was coming and people rejected it.

I was born in the 50's and was a child in the 60's. I never took drugs, but a lot of kids did that. Kids did not want to conform so they grew their hair long and smoked their dope. Today, kids rebel by getting tats and piercings. I don't have tats or piercings, but I understand about the long hair thing.

"The sign said long-haired freaky people need not apply..."

hmm. I thought people got tats and piercing cos they just wanted to copy everyone else that was getting them....

as for people not telling them what to do think or say...when ever was it that people did that once you were an adult?
Was it just the american baby boomers that became hippies? Why did they fight in Vietnam again?

I know all this is in the past, but what about the children of these hippies? Surely their lax parenting has affected the next generation. How was the Jesus movement related?

The long hair thing...I find strange because short hair is so much easier to look after. Many women have shorter hair because long hair would get in the way...guys pull it, it gets stuck in machines. its annoying. I mean its beautiful, but beautiful isnt always practical. Also having a lot of hair can give you headaches. And its a pain to wash.

?! Maybe guys grew their hair long just to experience what it was like to be female and emphasise with the plight I dont know. But I notice many cant look after their long hair, it goes all ratty with split ends etc and the. they just end up tying it in a greasy ponytail.

if you were on drugs at school you wouldnt have been able to even pass your exams or do your assignments if you were stoned. And most schools expel students if they are caught doing drugs or dealing. So I dont get that drug thing either.

Where they just nuts? Plus drugs arent cheap.

Actually the original Hippies were the 19th Century Pre Raphaelites and their circle
In particular their Female supporters wore clothing similar to their 1960s counterparts
and it was considered outrageous to there narrow minded contempories

There was a really odd thing about the 'Hippie Generation'. These youngsters of the late 60's and early 70's demanded to be free from all of societies mores and teachings. No one over 30 years of age was to be trusted, free love disguised as sex, and drugs. The hippies were only responsible for what they wanted to do.

But, the huge surprise came down the road, when the Hippie Generation matured and reached middle age. What happened? They mostly turned Republican and adopted the Christian social norms of the past. It wasn't until the Hippie Generation matured that the Government of the USA, the Presidency, the House, the Senate, and the Supreme Court was wrested from the Democrats for the first time in decades. That's right, the mature Hippies voted Republican en-masse and tossed out the Dems during the 'Gingrish Revolution'.

So, people do learn. When the Hippies matured and began having children of their own and having to work for a living they changed, the last thing they wanted was their own kids doing drugs or having free sex. They grew up and accepted responsibility.

haha how ironic
and they became technocrats.

I have no idea what Gingrish revolution was though. Basically the hippies were hippiecrites.

Actually not true about the hippies growing up because I know many children of hippie parents who said they were encouraged to have sex by their parents...and do drugs, often with them or in front of them.

And drugs were freely available.

I was reading about Steve Jobs whos first daughter said he offered her drugs and had PDAs with his wife in front of her. She was supposed to be all cool with that though he and his first gf had her when they were in their 20s and unwed.

He died young though of cancer. But that is only one example of hippie parenting theres probably many others. Some kids grew up in communes where everyone just walked round naked and breast fed their kids till they were ten.

when I was coming of age the majority youth group were not hippies. They were yuppies.

Though I must have been a generation behind because the yuppie mentality did not appeal to me. I leaned more toward the hippies but yuppies were equally as weird, and their drug of choice was cocaine and speed and money.

I read this book called stories from Jonestown
This happened in 1978...before I was born

anyway, this hippie cult was actually a commune in Guyana and they all died because their leader was apparently strung out on meth and paranoid the US govt was out to get them. So he poisoned them and then shot himself, and convinced them they were dying for a cause.

It seems to me a similar thing happened in Vietnam where itwas the other way round, the US sent people over there to die because they were paranoid the Vietnamese govt was out to get them. So they got in first and heaps of people died. I dont know how many though they didnt all die in one day. And they may have been on drugs too. The ones that survived had to go on pain relief meds anyway cos they were so traumatised by it.

913 americans died in Guyana in one day

according to wiki stats, in Vietnam 282,000 americans died.

of Vietnamese 882,000 died (estimate) . I dont even know why, it seemed to me just cos one deranged leader thought it was a good thing to do. Were they on drugs?!

two hippies were walking down the road and came across a priest with a broken arm.
Hey man, how did you break your arm? I fell in the bathtub. Later, one hippie asked the other, Hey man what's a bathtub? I don't know man, it must be a Catholic thing.

I may have mentioned this before but if not here it is...

There is a young trendy bar near my home called The dead Hippy. I don't know why or if it refers to a particular dead Hippy. Being an old person I haven't had the nerve to go in and find out! :)

the most despised youth group in recent times were hipsters. I dont know if they are just the children or grandchildren of hippies, or the children of yuppies. Or maybe they are a combination of yuppies and hippies, like a hybrid.

maybe in a few years we'll see yupsters.
