Way cool. I was a spook so was never PCS was always TAD, so was always a rider so rode nothing but Fish and City class boats. So way cool know the Sturgeon and LA class boats well......Hooyah shipmate.

Sorry I'm a little late to the party...

I tried to post this a while back, but couldn't get it to post correctly, then felt a little too shy and just deleted the whole thing.

But after watching all the other courageous souls here in this thread... I figured, why not have a go. I don't know how to use those filters that make you look 20 years younger and 30 pounds lighter that seem to be so popular nowdays, so this is the best I could do.

I don't like pictures of myself, at all, so when I can help it, I get rid of them. I have very few pictures of myself from past years because I'm trying to erase some of the bad memories right along with the pictures. I also don't want to look back and dwell on the way I USED to look, even if I still didn't like what I saw back then, because I don't want to pine for something I can never go back to.

But this year my Mom wanted a family Christmas portrait so I had no choice but to oblige. I made an attempt at doing my hair, dutifully dragging out my trusty but ancient Conair hot rollers, which I don't think I've used since probably 1995.

So in this picture, I'm pretty much a hot mess, as I had just yanked my hair out of the curlers and haven't even brushed it through.

And what did I see as soon as I pulled out the rollers but an all too obvious gray hair sticking straight out -- sideways, no less -- as if it were clearing mocking me over the fact that a whole lot of years had passed since I'd last really put some effort into my hair. You know, like way back when I was a spring chicken, but those days have LONG passed, of which this geriatric piece of hair seemed all too eager to point out.

Try as I might, no amount of styling product or hairspray would put it in place (I think those gray hairs are almost as stubborn as I am -- go figure,) and so I had to resort to pulling them back into the top half of my hair back just to hide it.

I couldn't help but be amused at my own hair's determination to both bamboozle and betray me all at once, thus making the rare exception of snapping an ever-popular selfie.

It was just one of those "This is so ridiculous!" moments that you just can't help but laugh -- and totally at yourself.

Dye it. Make it a color, like magenta or something :D
I would absolutely love to dye my hair in bright, funky colors. Back when I was growing up in Lutheran school, if you had unnaturally or too obviously colored hair, it meant you were bad blood and from the wrong side of the tracks.

I love that rainbow hair has gone mainstream and now I see little old ladies with pink hair.

Years ago I dyed my hair burgundy red and even eggplant, but it kills your hair. I had to keep it chin length and was dyeing it nearly every month, so it got too expensive, even with home kits.

I would love to try some of those wild colors, but the only way I could do it is if I learned to wear wigs or extensions, and I don't even like wearing hats (because I'm usually too warm and anything on your head just holds more heat in.)

Gah! I feel like I'm missing out on all the fun. 😭

Go punk: Shave it!
Punk has never been my personal aesthetic.

I like it on others, but it's never a look I gravitated towards myself.

The closest I ever got was dressing up as a female version of Brandon Lee's The Crow one year for Halloween, including the black and white face paint.

I wore all black (usually I like bright jewel tones) and wrapped a chain belt around my arms. I didn't even go to a party -- we were just allowed to dress up for work that day.

It was fun to see people's shock, though I guess it was more goth than punk.

I worked at a college cafe, and lots of punk, goth, and alternative regulars who had never acknowledged me before were suddenly talking to me.

It was definitely an interesting lesson on how humans react strongly to what they see.

Even I have to admit, a shaved look would be a lot less money and time!

But for me, hair kind of symbolizes my current state in life. After my husband left me, I chopped it all off, symbolizing a new start and trying to cut off ties with the past.

These days I keep it long, trying to symbolize growth, though it refuses to grow any longer than halfway down my back.

I can't help but wonder if it's another built-in reminder of my own limitations.

I shave my scalp. I wonder what that says about my life. Ha ha

Hey... it sounds like you're dealing and healing. Sorry you got to go through that, but this is the sinful order in which we live. I got a tale, too. We'll get through it.

In the mean time, get a dragon tattoo down your back, shave only one side of your scalp, slap in a few safety pins where the hair used to be and show us more pictures! :D

I don’t want to be a party pooper, but on the internet you don’t really know what motivates someone. I mean, I hope it’s all innocent but sometimes it isn’t. Maybe it’s better to not reveal too much about yourself until you trust the person asking?

Lots of threads lately asking people for pictures, where they are from, their interests, etc. If someone was data mining or aggregating information to build a dossier on people then they have a decent start.

The funny thing is, one of the reasons I stick to a more conservative look is because I enjoy catching the people with the very looks you're describing off-guard.

We all have tales to tell and hopefully you'll tell more of yours (I've caught a few of them around the forums -- keep sharing!) What is your best advice for healing?

As for me, I have no interest in tattoos for myself, but am often talking to people who have them. I had mentioned in other posts that for a while, I was part of a ministry that talked to inmates. It was so long ago that I've lost track... I went to, I think, 5 maximum security prisons to talk to a few guys, and some were in for murder.

They would often comment over the fact that they couldn't believe someone clean cut and so different from their own lives (aka, boring, lol!) was taking the time to talk to them on her own time and travel expenses. So here I was, this boring nerdy girl who's not into drinking and has never tried smoking or drugs, going through the locked iron gates and steely stares of the prison system to talk to tattoo-sleeved guys who could describe what it was like taking a person's last breath.

Like you, I enjoy marching to the beat of a different drum. But I'm often the opposite of what most people think in a very different way.

People with tattoos, shaved heads, and extreme piercings automatically elicit shock.

Me?

I'm the one who likes to shock the ones who are used to doing the shocking, and I've found it works best when you don't really look anything like them. :)

This is definitely a valid concern and the reason why I originally deleted my first post...

I often wonder if I make a huge mistake by sharing what I do, and though I'm sure I don't get it quite right, often pray for discernment.

Thank you for this very important reminder.

If people are going to data mine, etc., they are plenty sophisticated enough to do so with information outside of this site. That's why i don't worry about hacking. If it happens, I will report it and deal with it. One time I had some clown steal some "convenience checks" and charge about $800 to my credit card account. I reported it and they wiped it out. I also closed my cards.

Hey, nutt'n wrong with that! I also think you have a pair for going into a prison. Wow.

I don't like tattoos either -- not on myself, and not on women. (There was this gorgeous Latin girl in the gym a few years ago. She had the most sumptuous dark tan complection marred by a sleeve running down one of her arms. Yuck.)

I don't have much advice for healing, unfortunately. I have a father wound that has yet to be healed, and the wound of the loss of my honey healed on its own, through the natural grief processes that kick in. Unfortunately, when I've sought out therapists, few seemed actually capable.

I think at some point, Seoul, whatever's troubling you you need to take head-on. One thing that STARTED to work for me was a JKD class. I have mental abuse issues and bullying coming out the ying-yang when I was a kid. Grew up thinking I didn't have the same rights to existing as everyone else. But, this class became the closest thing I've ever had to effective therapy. It forced me to face the false notions I had about myself and I started to learn to stop acting in fear of my opponent and take the fight to him. (I still have much to go in that regard, but those bad foundations were rocked because of that class.)

I think the only thing you can really do is face the fear, the anxiety, and FORCE your way through it. Of course, asking God to come along and help might not be a bad idea. Remember what David wrote about not trusting in chariots.

Just my thoughts.

Also, if you wanna steal my identity, just know I have six figures of student loan debt and you're going to take that along with it. Enjoy paying those bills.

I love those moments when someone (not you, Goji, just people in general) might have assumed things about me... And then certain elements of my life will just blow their theories out of the water. :)

I actually found the prison ministry to be very cathartic because it sure did stretch my boundaries at the time. I miss it a lot, but stopped because I felt God was saying I needed to get out due to safety concerns. I'll never regret it though and it was one of the most rewarding, albeit it harrowing, times of my life.

I'm so sorry for the bullying and loss you have been through, most especially the loss of your beloved wife. You certainly seem like a very strong and resilient person, and I appreciate your taking the time here to help the rest of us grow through our pains right along with you.

Yeah it’s a risk everyone who puts their information out there must take. I am not saying don’t do it but there are risks and I just like to see people think twice. I must admit I have been trained to be hyper aware and even a bit paranoid of other people so I most likely have a bias here.
