Has anybody ever noticed that when somebody usually uses these two words that they have usually just said something that people take offense to? If a person has to end the sentence with "no offense" then they should probably rethink what they are going to say before they even open their mouth.

Why would somebody say something offensive and then try to take it back by saying "no offense"...? Some things are better off being unsaid.

What about when somebody says something that you wouldn't normally take offense to and then they end the sentence with "no offense" almost as if they were intending to offend somebody in the first place, but are using that phrase to cover themself because they know they just said something offensive.

How many of you have encountered this?

my friend this is something we will never know the answer too. :)

I usually only use that phrase when I'm making a statement that someone in the group might think I'm using to refer to them. Like for example, an ex of mine had a mother on welfare very briefly while she was looking for a new job after one heck of an accident that caused her to lose the job she had, and we were talking about welfare and I mentioned how I know of some people that use it as an excuse to sit on their backsides and let the government carry them through life rather than trying to get a job, and I threw in the "no offense" along with, "because I know not everyone abuses the system," in case she didn't catch the "I know of SOME people" part and thought I meant all people on welfare did that. It's a phrase I usually use when I'm afraid I'm about to be misunderstood and cause offense that I never meant to cause.

Yes. Many people talk more than they listen and don't realize half their words aren't needed.

I understand this, a lot of people will take things the wrong way or think that you were directing a comment at somebody. I have learned to be quick to listen and slow to speak. To be thoughtful about what words I will use and think of how the person receiving the words might interpret them.

Then again, some people are offended by just about anything outside of themselves. A lot of these people fall into the 'politically correct' crowd.

A lot of times people use the "no offense" when it is not needed, almost as to cause offense, or to get a rise out of somebody.

This is a forum area with many different Religions and Denominations represented. Often times, in discussing a Doctrinal Principle,
a clarification is made that might go against a particular person's religion or current belief. The intent of revealing truth is not to offend a person, but because it is human nature to attach to a belief system, it may have the effect of offending that person.

I particularly make a point when witnessing to a person in a cult, denomination or some form of Universalism, that I am speaking to the issue and Doctrine, not about the person. I do sometimes try to assure them to take no offense as a person, and that this is a doctrinal truth, not about the person.

If you have a particular person who is saying this in chat or in the forums, why not address them there, this would prevent the
possibility of falling into gossip -- No Offense.

John 6:61
When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you
?

Matthew 24:10-11
And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and
shall deceive many.

Matthew 15:12
Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying?

Proverbs 18:19
A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.

Matthew 11:6
And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

This is just a generalization, I am in no way talking about any particular person and do not want any specific person(s) to be mentioned. I do not take kind to gossip.

Yes. Its a poor excuse for insulting you. Also people who say they are "brutally honest". Its just a veil for them to hide behind to be a jerk but pretend they are not being one.

Also I love when people say "no comment". Well you just made a comment signifying your lack of desire to make one. Or whatever you had to say was probably going to be insulting. So how about doing us a favor, and making "no comment"! That's my two cents!

I would say that these things also fall into the same basket, especially the "no comment" this leaves the other person(s) open to assume what kind of comment you would have made had you actually came out and said it.

And yes, it does a lot of times, but not always, imply that you were going to say something insulting or at the least say something out of line.

And whatever you leave me to assume you were going to say? Is going to be so much worse that what you could have said in the first place.

Then later I'm not going to remember if you actually said it or I just thought it. What? No one else does that?

Haha, you arent alone! This has gotten me several times, I was beginning to think that I was the only one who had this problem at times.
