What does 'in like manner' mean in Acts 1:11, which reads:

"Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. "

I think it means that in the same way as He was "taken up" He will also descend from heaven. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 says: "Because the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ shall rise first." This points to the rapture.

In Revelation 19 He returns on a white horse and with heaven's armies. So these are two distinct and separate events.

In the same way. As He ascended so shall He return.

Yes when He returns in a white horse is a different event, but acts 1:11 is before the white horse appears:

Zechariah 14:3 Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
5 And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

Matthew 24:16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:

Revelation 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

-When they saw the abomination of desolation, they fled to the mountains, were Jesus had descended "in like manner" upon the mount of olives, and divided it, to make a way of escape into the wilderness, were they were nourished during the 42 months:

Revelation 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

In like manner would be similar

Keep in mind who the angel was specifically addressing. At this point it would have been the 11 apostles, but it was for our understanding also.

Since 10 days later was Pentecost and they (including Mathis) all received the outpouring….. it would be addressed to those of us in this grace administration…. the church of God…which is what 1Th 4:16 & 17 is referencing.

That is a really good question. I have been pondering this verse for the last few days.

Those may be two events, but they’re not far apart, and the first one is not necessarily the “rapture”. In 1 Thess 4:16 that’s just a loud shout from heaven, and according to Matt. 24:29-31, in those days the sky will be darkened like pitch black, that’s the fifth bowl judgement in Rev 16:10, very close to the end of the Great Tribulation.

It means that Jesus ascended to Heaven on a cloud and in like manner will return on a cloud.

Acts 1:9
9And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

Repeatedly in the New Testament the return of Christ is described as being on a cloud, among the clouds, in the clouds, with the clouds, or something to the effect.

Daniel 7:13
13I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.

Matthew 24:29-30
29Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

1 Thessalonians 4:17
17Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Revelation 1:7
7Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

What does 'in like manner' mean in Acts 1:11,
Just as Christ ascended to Heaven in His glorious resurrected body, He will return to earth in that same body. But there will be a huge difference between His first and second comings.

“And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭1:9-10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭13:24-26‬ ‭KJV‬‬

I think acts is just agreeing with what’s been taught in Jesus words and the apostles words

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭4:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

we shouldn’t think Jesus isn’t really going to return to earth the same way he left he will Appear just as he disappeared from thier sight as he went up into heaven , when the New Testament word is fulfilled he will return visably returning

Acts is making sure no one mater interprets it as some figurative return as many do he’s saying we will
Know it’s the end when Jesus appears returning so until then we should live as of tomorrow could Be that day and keep moor selves prepared so we aren’t caught unaware

“so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭9:28‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;”

Yet the second coming on white horses ,WITH THE SAINTS, blackening the sky, in a warrior posture killing the evil army, IN NO WAY RESEMBLES acts 1.

Nothing whatsoever looks the same, nothing.

However, the pretrib rapture model MIRRORS acts one depiction.

Nothing whatsoever looks the same, nothing.

However, the pretrib rapture model MIRRORS acts one depiction.
what he meant was just like they looked and saw him go up and disappear , people would see him appear and return

the optics of it isn’t the subject but the “same manner “ my position is like is saying it’s not a figurative return but a visual one

“So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:19‬ ‭

that actually happened and there is a time he will return in the same way actually and be seen his time in heaven is for a time meanwhile until then

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the world presence of the Lord; and he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭3:19-21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

He isn’t visible now to the eyes but when the time is fulfilled he will
Once again appear

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭1:7‬ ‭KJV‬‬

revelation shows us the time after he’s taken up , and how Satan is let loose on earth cast out of where Christ is seated

“And she brought forth ‭a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.”
Revelation‬ ‭12:5‬

in heaven the kingdom is now established but on earth satan is present until Jesus returns this shows is the state of heaven and earth after Christ is received in heaven

“And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them.

Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.”
‭‭Revelation‬ ‭12:10, 12‬ ‭

Christ will return indeed the visuals of course will look different but until he returns on earth we’re in this state

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:8-9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

it’s why there is persecutions on earth heaven is already at peace and the kingdom is established until he returns and establishes the earth with his kingdom

but I think the point of acts there is to show it’s going to be in a visual manner people will see him , just as they saw him go up

Now that you mention it, it was more of a private ascension. By no means was it "every eye shall see him".
Hmmmm that adds even more validity to the pretrib rapture model.

Clouds seem to be associated with heaven then in Daniel 7:13 that you mention. When Jesus "was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight." do you consider this to be a cloud like people see when they look up in the sky? Or do you consider the cloud to be the great cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 12:1. Or do you consider the cloud to be something else?

Try reading a version in English instead of King Jamesese. It means "in the same way".

I believe the cloud was most likely God concealing Himself in a cloud like He tends to do. The cloud isn’t necessarily composed of water vapor like a normal cloud, but it’s described like a cloud because it visually looks like a cloud.

This is not unprecedented. Many verses about God in a cloud.

Right. And the manner in this example was"while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
