It appears that you are conflating "faith" and "hope" with completed action.
We hope for what we do not have. We have faith for what we do not yet see. However, Peter states clearly that we have been born again... PAST PERFECT TENSE. It's done.

Then you have hope that you will be born again just as Peter is saying. Indeed when you are actually born again or saved is at the resurrection. If there is no resurrection then everything the Bible says is a lie and everything is vain. If Jesus was not born, crucified, and resurrected, then all our faith is nothing but vanity. Faith is good, don't get me twisted, but indeed faith is in things not seen, things that have not happened yet. A good parallel is about Abraham how he had faith that he would be granted the promised land and children that number the sands of the sea, but in Abraham's life these things he did not see. That's why he had so much faith because he believed the promise though it did not happen in his lifetime.
To be honest, only can you know that you're truly born again if you are 100% confident that you're ready to leave all the cares of the world behind and meet God face to face at his throne. Most dispensationalists call that "rapture ready", but think about the parable of the rich fool, it's more like death ready.
