Hello Everyone,

One of the things God has reminded me of over the past several years is that God blesses His followers with a peace of mind.

However, we are responsible for making choices that maintain our peace (and, as Christians, we are to also respect the peace of others.) He has reminded me often seeking out, desiring, or maintaining the wrong attention often robs us, and others, of that peace.

The reason this has been so strongly on my mind is because God has convicted me of things such as: 1. stating things that will shock or pull people in because of the drama or a strong opinion--it generates the wrong attention (God wants me to think before I speak or write--I fail many times but am trying to get better); 2. listening to, or contributing to conversations that promote gossip, shock, or drama, (again, guilty as charged but I'm working on it!); and, 3. being attracted to someone simply because he is paying attention to me.

The last issue has really been on my heart, seeing as I'm heading into 9 years of being single with no relationship. However... when I look back at the past, I realize I got into the wrong relationships because... a guy was paying attention to me.

I understand the rush of someone seemingly going out of their way to talk to you, contact you, or ask you questions no one else bothers to ask. I know the pull of being around someone who seems to make you laugh, think, or even cry... and it's all so attractive because it's a change of pace from the dull ache and pain of everyday life. But... it's also being pulled toward the wrong person... for the wrong reasons. We find ourselves trying to justify things we shouldn't ("Oh sure, he might not go to church regularly or be that into the faith, but maybe I can be a good influence on him!") or being willing to compromise things about ourselves that we should never compromise ("She drinks a little too much... but maybe I can help her...")

I don't know if any of you have experienced this, but the bottom line is, at least for me, that God is telling me flat-out: "You are addicted to the attention you're getting, and it's the wrong kind of attention and not what I want for you. You know you need to break this off/stop doing these things... But you just don't want to and you're choosing not to." In other words, God is saying to me, "You can do things my way, or you can do things your way. It's your choice." It's TOUGH, because I sit and think... "Ok, Lord... how long? Do you want me to sit here quietly and be alone forever?"

And yet... when people ask me, "So... I think I like this or that person... what do you think? I really think something could work out between us..." (even though they have all the same incompatibilities that seem to be pretty much impossible hindrances to a lasting relationship) and I want to tell gently tell them, "Sweetheart, you're just addicted to the attention that person is giving you." I try to point it out gently but I know they probably won't listen--after all, I never did!! But in the end, all it does is pull a person into an endless cycle of grief, trauma, and turmoil. We're left shouting, "Why, why, WHY?" when in the end... maybe it was actually our own bad choice to hang on in the first place.

It seems there are some things that most of us choose to learn the hard way.

How about all of you? Have you gone through the same things? Does God ever convict you of being around the wrong people or saying/ doing certain things just because you feel a need for attention? (Sometimes even if we don't think we need the attention, we're still addicted to it--saying shocking/offensive things gives one a sense of power. One true test I've found for myself is if I can't seem to stop doing/saying/writing things I know will inflame others, or if I can't seem to stop talking to/hanging around people who pay attention to me but don't contribute to who I am in a positive way, I'm probably chasing after attention more than I'm chasing after God's will.)

Does anyone else out there ever feel this way? And, if you ever do feel convicted of being attracted to attention in an unhealthy way, what steps do you take in order to change it?

(The poll is multiple choice--feel free to choose as many as you feel apply.)

I get weirded out by too much attention. I like when attention goes to the topic at hand or furthers a point. I would prefer a heated passionate dialogue than a Nodmyheadlikeyeah smells of elderberrys derailment.

If people start talking about me too much positively or negatively, I get paranoid. I start wondering what their intentions are or what they want from me. I don't mind compliment as long as they are sincere.

I get paid to deal with drama, so I don't see it as entertainment on my own time. We've probably all studied enough psych to understand that folks who don't receive enough positive attention will settle for negative, even if it means slapping a total stranger around physically, verbally or otherwise. And then there are those who just need to vent from time to time. We'd probably all fit in that boat.

If I'm present for a heated conversation, I normally try to listen for awhile first, as things can often become that way over a simple misunderstanding. Intent and direction are key, so before I waste my time getting all worked up about something, I'd like to know whether they really believe what they are saying or their purpose is simply to inflame or bully...or some sort of social experiment. I don't do the white rat thing well and tend to bite back, and I really don't like to do that if I can avoid it all. Someone else can have my cheese.

I really appreciate your feedback... I was just wondering, how do you find yourself detoxing from drama? Especially Jules... since it's part of your job? What do you find helps you clear your mind and get back to "normal" instead of staying riled up or stressed out?

The ride home with great music would be the norm. Working out/dance class, getting lost in a good book, playing piano and bubblebaths are also helpful. :) And then I come here. When I read between the lines and see the pain so many people are going through, my life seems a whole lot simpler. It also helps to realize that just because someone may be making their point in a way that appears antisocial doesn't mean there's not a valid point buried in the mud.

I have been where you at with hanging around the wrong people, because at least they were people. At the end of my marriage, I had been neglected, abused and cheated on. And not physically touched in a good way for 6 years. I thought when a person got married, intimacy was implied but I was very very wrong. I found out at the end of that six years and the divorce was final, I was a dried up soul on the inside. And for a few months, went down a wrong path just trying to water it up any way possible.

Then conviction set in and of course I reigned myself in and had to put myself in a good situation. I think the reaching for the "anything is better than nothing" comes when we neglect ourselves. Am I saying you are doing this? I don't know you well enough to say that all, but I know for me it rings true. That is when I pull my closest friends in tight, pull up Steel Magnolias and fill up the dry spots.

Loneliness sucks. And we can be surrounded by the best friends ever and still be lonely on the inside.

Sometimes, no, many times I say things just to see how people will respond. It is very amusing. Nothing harmful though, just silly random stuff.

I completely understand what you're saying, Amber--sometimes we say things with a playful or inquisitive intent, nothing more.

The inspiration for this thread was two-fold: first, I was thinking of some of the relationships I COULD have entered into over the past several years... the wrong guys (i.e., one openly told me he struggled with addictions) for all the wrong reasons (someone to be able go to holiday family gatherings with, alleviate the loneliness, etc.)

Second, I've been spending more time reading the forums vs. posting, and was noticing some posts that seem to be written with the clear, if thinly disguised, motivation of arousing strong emotions in other people, leading to very biting verbal ping-pong matches. The blaring intent of such posts seems to scream out, "Pay attention to me," or "Causing other people to react makes me feel like someone powerful... someone who can command attention/reaction." (Getting a reaction is key--if no one reacted, the thrill wouldn't be there.) And it made me think of times when I myself have been guilty of this.

I was curious as to whether other people ever feel convicted of this or not as well... or if they feel they are doing God's will by repeatedly making such posts. Self-justification produces many blind spots... of which, I happen to have many of myself.

How about if one is addicted to Kim's threads? :p

LOL, Zero. I think that DEFINITELY mandates a 12-step recovery program... Step 1... Step away from the thread... slowly and carefully. :D

I had to laugh at JayDawg's post as well--I can see myself in a little of each of the poll answers, but some applied more than others... I happened to choose the generally "less extreme" answers... :)

NO I'AM NOT, *walks out of the thread and slams the door*!

There's enough to deal with in life without actively seeking drama, we should seek to live in peace with people, but drama can be more unavoidable as a Christian. Whereas I would of just ignored things more in the past.........'how can your God be love if He hates gay people', ahhh here it goes (in a Keenan and Kel stylee).......

I don't like drama. I rather keep things peaceful, if possible. But I will speak my mind if someone upsets me.
