I'm in my 40's and when I was in school I was diagnosed with a learning disability. I realize that some people on these forums have already read me talk about it. But it came to me that I never asked if anyone else on this site was diagnosed with it. I'm interested in meeting other Christians who might be struggling with the same thing I am. They call mine ADD or ADHD. I tend to be more ADD then HD. I'm not a hyper person. I space out easily.

Currently I'm only a custodian or janitor or caretaker, depending on what you call people who clean a school, church, or other public building in your country. We don't make a lot of money. It's something I do because I have "problems" with my learning disability or whatever else is wrong with me... I struggle with thinking fast. I can't think fast. Therefor it takes me longer to learn things, and I tend to make more mistakes... This causes me to worry a lot. Sometimes due to my worries, and the moments when my mistakes bit me in the butt, I also fall into Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which also leads into Anxiety. If you readers, have ever wondered, how come I'm so hard or myself, or why I seem to get angry when someone tries to put extra force on me. Then this might be your answer. Because if you put force on someone that already feels like He's working hard to stay afloat as it is, those kind of people tend to snap easier. At least that's the way I find myself feeling... I am not saying that I snap at people all the time. I do my best not too. And I try to be easy going. But that always tends to change when I feel attacked.

I'm just wondering, is there anyone else on this site that has some of the same problems I'm dealing with. If so I would like to talk with you. :)

First of all, thanks for further explaining what you're dealing with/going through. It definitely does help others to better understand you.

I've never been diagnosed with a learning disability myself, but I have personally known a few people who have been, and I have to say that I've disagreed with their diagnoses every single time. In other words, I've simply found that their minds were preoccupied with other things at any given moment in time which caused them to not be focusing completely on the learning task at hand.

In fact, I dated a woman for 2 1/2 years who had been diagnosed with a learning disability as a child, and her diagnoses was definitely way off the mark. I mean, in her particular case, she had been sexually molested by one of her mother's boyfriends at 4 years old, then she wound up in foster care where she was continually abused...even to the point where one foster parent changed her name; thereby creating a very real identity crisis within her. Do you think that such an one might have trouble focusing upon their studies? Quite frankly, I think that a lot of doctors/therapists/psychiatrists have learning disabilities in that they simply haven't got a clue.

You mentioned that your learning disability has led to anxiety. I'm wondering if it's not the other way around. In other words, were you anxious about certain things that were hindering you from focusing solely on learning, and therefore diagnosed wrongly?

Obviously, only you can answer that question, and it is a question.

Anyhow, I've got to get ready for my own crappy job, so I'll check back later.

Have a blessed day.

P.S.

As I'm thinking back on my own childhood, I've always been a very deep thinker. In other words, while other children were focusing on playing games and the like, I was continually pondering things like death and what happens after it. Those types of thoughts CONSUMED ME for as far back as I can remember, and I hated school because it forced me to think upon things that I really didn't care about. I'd go so far as to say that if I didn't have a very good memory, then I might have been wrongly diagnosed with a learning disability myself.

In my particular case, I had the ability to recall what was said in class, and I therefore scored well on tests...even to the point of getting a full scholarship for college. Of course, I dropped out of college after only about 2 1/2 weeks, and primarily because I hated my English literature class. Again, I had no desire whatsoever to read or learn anything that the world had to offer because of the deep and very real questions which were constantly churning in my mind.

Anyhow, I've noticed a lot of similarities between you and me while reading some of your posts, and I'm just wondering if anything that I've just described relates to you as well.

Gotta get ready for work...

No, but reading this article just seems to describe most of my year 1s and 2s or those who hadnt gone to preschool and learned some of the etiquette of going to school. lol

https://www.webmd.com/add-adhd/childhood-adhd/diagnosing-adhd

if that was so the majority of the class would be adhd on a bad day. And Im always finding children losing their socks and hats in the library.

my thing is patience
Teachers who have patience have a gift

not many teachers are patient. When they have patience as a gift, they can give it to their learners.

I have A.D.D. An A.B.I. enhances this. I'm guessing a medication-induced brain disease hasn't helped matters.

When I was in elementary school they thought I had a learning disability. They suddenly yanked me out of class one day and put me in one of those special classes. The teacher of the special class was puzzled why I was in there and before the end of the day I was out of there and back to my normal class. That same year I ended up being put into the talented and gifted class for students who can perofrm or do perform at higher levels.

I think thre is a fine line between genius and insanity and sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference. Often people just don't recognize what they are looking at, if it doesn't make sense to them, or it confuses them then in their mind it must mean it's a problem; I think that's what happened to me. So maybe you shouldn't be so hard on yourself beause maybe you're just misundertood.

I was given I.Q. tests throughout elementary school. As an adult, I learned that I was in the top .2% For me, it was a handicap. I didn't learn the way we were taught, and I got bored quickly. I was a square peg that they insisted on pounding into a round hole. As a result, I hated school and became a rebel. Which destroyed my early life. Oh well, watcha gonna do, the king likes Daniel more than me and you. Lol

its actually common for bad teachers to blame the learners when they arent keeping up with them or paying attention.

when it really just comes down to impatience on the teachers part. Some teachers expect their learners to be perfect right away when it actually takes lots of practice to be perfect.

A good teacher is someone I highly respect. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad teachers.
A good teacher will impart to the student the ability to think for, and thus teach, themselves.

some children need a lot longer one on one time than parents are willing to give.
sometimes the stress will manifest in illness. then parents think something is wrong when its just the child hasnt learned the basics of getting along with others in a group

because their parents were impatient themselves. Teachers then give out diagnoses of 'learning disability' for those not keeping up with the boring way they teach. they blame the learner for being lazy, when actually who was the lazy one?

children are learning all the time, making progress is learning and it can happen at different rates and they need to be able to make mistakes and also learn from those mistakes. its called being creative.

a friend of mine has an only son and shes a school teacher...shes always telling me her son has ADHD.
Her mother was a school teacher as well

It also like my librarian friend who's son had dyslexia

or the ballet teacher whos daughter was paralysed/autistic or clumsy

A lot of parents just have children who need to learn in different ways not cant or unable to learn! They just need to find better ways of teaching their gift which they may have been given unawares. Patience!

Anyway, I just find it somewhat ironic.

as for learning, I think its so silly people call slower learners disabled. Then write them off so that they dont ever learn what they could be capable of, given time. It takes time, sometimes a lifetimes, Its not like for some things you can just pick up like that. Like the gift of tongues, people can speak without ever having learned it! But they dont actually know what they are speaking till someone else translates.

Teaching is basically translating something so someone else who doesnt know can understand it easily.

anyway thinking in this topic makes me think of this song from the 90s...so many different things to learn from life

I was slow learning to speak...I was 8. I could never say sounds and noises that involved moving the tongue quickly. But when I first spoke in tongues, that disappeared. I speak faster in tongues than anyone I've ever hear. Someone once heard me speak in tongues and laughed.

I had a terrible time in school. I had so much homework that I couldn't hardly keep my head above water!

Two Psychiatrists told me that I would never move out of my parents house. Because I have learning disability and other mental problems that they couldn't treat with medications.

I can't convince you people that I really have this problem. I can only tell you that I was sent to special classes, and I almost didn't make it through school. Even my first two jobs fired me for being too slow. I am a slow person. It's hard for me to concentrate. It takes me longer then most people to read a book. Most people balance more things in life then I do, and yet I feel like life is hard.

It was a Psychiatrist that told me that my learning disability was causing the other mental issues that I have, like OCD, and Anxiety. That also agrees with the book Driven to Distraction. But other then that, I can't do anything else to convince any of you. I only got my stories to tell.

I remember one teacher boasting about a student because the student was very good at the subject. I thought to myself, that's just a natural ability. It should be the student that struggles and puts in a good effort should be the one getting praise.

I think the main problem with schools, is they force the teachers to teach the way they want. Usually I don't think it's a good way... I think the results speak for themselves.

Hey, I like your stories, so there.

:p

Whatever natural abilities or inabilities you might have, don't forget that you have access to the supernatural help of the Holy Spirit as a Christian.

God hasn't left you comfortless.

Personally, I NEVER rely upon my own abilities or inabilities, but always seek the supernatural grace of God instead.

I would simply advise you (and I started taking my own advice as soon as I got saved) to compile a list of promises in relation to what God/Jesus said the Holy Spirit would do for you.

The following verse is literally the very first verse of scripture that I memorized 33 1/2 years ago:

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." (John 14:26)

God's grace is sufficient.

I'm a bit confused. Do you really like my stories? Or are you being sarcastic?
