This is the first of many parables that Jesus told. We have a sower(a farmer or gardener) He is going forth to sow (pant seeds).

The field or garden had weeds and thorns around the edges(I say around the edges a good farmer or gardener will make sure his ground is ready for planting) The thorns grow up and choked them out.

Other seed fell into that good ground that was tilled and ready, and it brought forth crops some 100 fold every seed grow, some 60 fold most grow but some didn't, and some 30 fold some grow we got a crop from them just not as much as the others but still very good.

The disciples asked Jesus why don't you just speak to the people plainly?
Verse 11.

And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

The disciples believed in Jesus they had walked with him for a time so they had picked up knowledge that the people did not have. (yet; I thank they would have there chance)
Verse 12.

For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

For to everyone who has. If you are witnessing to someone the have something they can tell you to leave I don't want to hear it or they can ask you to tell them more, and I hope you have the knowledge to give them more(I am sure you do or you would not be out witnessing) Just like the farmer sowing his seed the one that walks away that is like being on the hard path. You lead someone to Jesus they are excited they go home and tell a friend or several friends they may get told your crazy, that is good for you but it is not for me. You follow up with them but they never get back with you at all they fell on rocky ground. They may get back with you and go to 2 or 3 bible studies and walk away. That is the weeds chocking them out. Then you find the diamond in the rough they grow, maybe 30,60 or even 100 fold.
This is what I would call teaching the milk of the word.
Not all parables are milk.
