I think romance is personal, the perception is different for everybody but it certainly exists, even in the Bible.
For example, today I received a gift from a friend in mexico I haven't talked to in a long time. I received this box with pictures from when he was here without him even saying a word about sending me anything , I didn't even know he knew when my birthday was but I guess facebook was very useful for that.
He was not my boyfriend but he certainly surprised me, in a good way! That is the most selfless detail I have ever received from a man. I imagine him in Mexico printing the photos, buying a birthday card, buying the little box and what's more hard to do, sending it to me from mexico by mail. The gift by itself was not the most beautiful part, but the action and the detail. What surprised about this was that we haven't talked in a long time, he didn't even mention my birthday when we talked weeks ago, I was NOT expecting it, and that we were not in a romantic relationship, although I knew he was interested.
I see this as romance, but maybe you would see this as something pointless or corny to do. However, this made my day and made me see the importance of expressing your feelings . You can make somebody else's day by an action like this, or maybe something more simple. It's not required to send a gift from Mexico .
So, I disagree with the previous posts. Romantic is not just chocolates and valentines day, it's not stupid, and some women like me do appreciate it =).
