I think romance is personal, the perception is different for everybody but it certainly exists, even in the Bible.

For example, today I received a gift from a friend in mexico I haven't talked to in a long time. I received this box with pictures from when he was here without him even saying a word about sending me anything , I didn't even know he knew when my birthday was but I guess facebook was very useful for that.
He was not my boyfriend but he certainly surprised me, in a good way! That is the most selfless detail I have ever received from a man. I imagine him in Mexico printing the photos, buying a birthday card, buying the little box and what's more hard to do, sending it to me from mexico by mail. The gift by itself was not the most beautiful part, but the action and the detail. What surprised about this was that we haven't talked in a long time, he didn't even mention my birthday when we talked weeks ago, I was NOT expecting it, and that we were not in a romantic relationship, although I knew he was interested.

I see this as romance, but maybe you would see this as something pointless or corny to do. However, this made my day and made me see the importance of expressing your feelings . You can make somebody else's day by an action like this, or maybe something more simple. It's not required to send a gift from Mexico :p.

So, I disagree with the previous posts. Romantic is not just chocolates and valentines day, it's not stupid, and some women like me do appreciate it =).

Thoughtful words and actions. That's romantic. Because even flowers and chocolates can be the most unromantic thing if not bundled with thoughtfullness.

My dad has the bad habit of going to RiteAid the day of valentines or an anniversary and getting the same ol nasty candy. No thought in it. And mom won't tell him we don't like it, cuz it'll hurt his feelings and he'll say "If you're gonna be ungrateful, then I won't get you anything!" So I have to pretend I eat them. When I don't. I throw them away slowly. "Just incase he checks."

Now.. if he paid attention and was more thoughtful, he would notice that the FIRST thing I do when I open a box of chocolates is look for the coconut piece. I verbalize this as if it will call out to me. So most likely I would be more happy with a Mounds candy bar than a whole box of chocolates with pieces I don't like. And I am. :)

I take it a 'candy' bar is a bar of chocolate?
Usually. In this context "Mounds" is a chocolate candy filled with a coconut-candy mixture. Although when it comes to snacks that have coconut, I prefer me an old-fashioned snowball. :D

I wonder what the writer of Song of Solomon would say about Romance not being in the Bible. Or even Ruth.
Solomon knew how to woo a woman. Obviously. Looking at the results of his life though I don't think it went well. Remember it was his relationship with his wives and his decision to worship their gods that led not only to his moral downfall but the downfall of Israel its self.

Ok, lets put it another way...

what really is the essence of romance..what is it?
Romance is aptly summed up by Shakespeare in "Romeo and Juliet" which I will remind you is a tragedy.

Shakespeare's (though I am a fan..) worldly view of romance over the scriptural Song of Solomon? Pass...

I don't think romance should be ditched for all women just because some don't like it. Opinion and judgment doesn't mean that it is Biblical.

Some people are too bitter to admit that they would love to be romantically pursued as opposed to mechanically or Logically pursued, like a business deal.

That is my point "Romance" as it is defined in this modern age is little more than seduction. While sometimes approached with"honorable" intent, and even "Godly" result. The method remains wrought with deceit and pretense, combine this with "chemistry" (very powerful stuff and equally transient and 'mind affecting') which fuddles what good sense a person might otherwise have and the consequences are ugly.
Observe if you will, the "honeymoon" phenomenon. The "seven year itch". How the death of romance is used so frequently as an excuse for infidelity, whether with another person, work, or other interests - even for divorce. How often in the very young it results in a loss of purity, severe depression - even suicide, unplanned pregnancy. All this can often be traced back to "romance".
And I stand on my statements about what romance did for Solomon.

There is an option you have left out, Biblically pursued :)
