Last week I got into an argument with my atheist friend, and he had some very good points about the christian God being unrealistic. Science has also been making more sense to me lately. I think I'm starting to loose faith. I like believing in God because it gives me hope and I don't want to loose it, or think for myself about these things.
What should I do to repress these doubts and regain faith?

God knows your thought so talking to God can be just thinking towards God. Pour out your heart to God and ask God to pull you through it. Not one person on here can tell you the right thing to do. We all have our faith tried and tested. What your going through is only between you and God, so go to God to find your answer. not the internet, someone else or the bible. God is in all of us and anyone can find and grow with God. The word of God is living and gives life to all that's living, Gods word can be found within all living things, you are living so seek it within yourself. The bible was written by men about their personal experiences with God, The bible is word of men. Gods word is within us and all other life, if you are seeking God then seek God from within yourself, give your thoughts to God, pour out your heart to God.

I say develop a stronger relationship with God, spend a lot of time in praise and worship and let Him have His way in you. You wont have to worry about anything after that!

Ha ha ha ha!! Science PROVES God, not the other way around.

Think about it - we have but 5 senses. We have all sorts of machines that can see things that our eyes cannot - so do they exist? The eyes say no, but the machines say yes - who is right?

Math proves a multidimensional universe - so to say that nothing exists outside of our space-time continuum is both arrogant and ignorant.

These atheists are not being scientific - they're emotional. They are angry with God over something and so they abandon faith - (and reason).

Well said. Evolution, for example, requires as much "faith" as creationism. Science is not the culprit here. Ungodly people who want to use science to discredit God are to blame. I was taught to believe that scientific research is a process; "postulate", "experiment (test)", "conclude". In today's world, we see many examples of the 'testing' step being skipped altogether. Because "science" postulates it, it must be true.

I believe that "...God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1) I believe Him when He said “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?" (Jeremiah 32:27) And finally, I believe that some day real "science" will lead us to that conclusion; if mankind is on this earth long enough to see it.

With respect to arguing with atheists, there are many excellent resources to help you in stating, and supporting, your position. One of these is Creation Ministries International. This ministry features the views of numerous scientists who agree that science points to the existence of a Godly presence, rather than the other way around.

God bless you. Keep arguing. :)

And this my brothers and sisters, is why you don't get into arguments with Atheists if you don't have concrete points!

My advise for you, Pray to God to take away evil thoughts from you, Ask him to have his way in you, Ask for more grace.. I think you should read your bible too..

In general, Spend more time with GOD :)

Did you actually advise this person NOT to go to the bible for an answer?

I had been experiencing these same thoughts right before I was first truly saved. For me all it took was my life going where I didn't want it, and me wanting to be anyone but me. I just God to change me into someone who was worthy of what I wanted for my life, and he did. Things are better than ever now. When this happened, every doubt in my mind was washed away. There is no other way, no matter how much science you put into it. God created science, God created everything. God even created sin, and uses it for good. It's not until you finally pray legitimately that you will actually understand just how amazing God is. I used to read things like this and say "Haha, these people are lying", but now that I've actually felt it, my world view is much different. There is a difference between praying, and merely thinking towards God.

I used to be an atheist, then God broke into my life! I couldnt really deny that he exsisted after that. Although i did backslide.....he's been gently calling me back to his side for ages now. He really is there and hes wonderful, you cant compare anything to his love, no knowledge, theory or philosophy has managed to take it away from me since connecting with him 13 years ago :)

even though you got banned (which is weird....), i'm gonna basically give my unwanted 2 cents.

my knee jerk reactions:
1)doubts are NOT unchristian. doubts lead us to questions, and questions lead us to bigger answers about God. my God is big enough to deal with any doubts.
2)that being said, i would try to keep doubts in context. questions make sense, but just because you have a question about God, even if there is no answer, doesn't mean that its a reason to turn from God. we are dealing with an infinitely big God. lets face it. there are gonna be things we just don't get. no matter how much we try to get them. but, i believe searching for answers to these questions can bring us closer to God (if we search in the right ways).
3)the idea that science and God are mutually exclusive, honestly, is just silly. the most cutting edge physics seems to be telling us that there is more in the world around us then we could ever imagine. the idea of dimensions on top of each other, this entire universe operation on strings that we can barely conceive of...its starting to look like science is moving towards proving that God DOES exist.
4)as for the specific doubts, some people on here had some good advice. i'd recommending spending some time with God, meditating on it, researching and trying to find what the bible says on the issue (and WHY), and talking to people you respect and who have been doing this longer then you. all of these things were given to you by God so that you could lean on them when you need to (and when you don't need to, really- there shouldn't be times when you're not leaning on these).

hope you see this, or come to conclusions like this, or see something else that helps, or come to other conclusions that help.

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.
Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.
Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.
And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven-footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.
Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.

Legislation

The Food and Drugs Act of 1906 was the first of more than 200 laws that constitute one of the world's most comprehensive and effective networks of public health and consumer protections. Here are a few of the congressional milestones:
  • The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938 was passed after a legally marketed toxic elixir killed 107 people, including many children. The FD&C Act completely overhauled the public health system. Among other provisions, the law authorized the FDA to demand evidence of safety for new drugs, issue standards for food, and conduct factory inspections.
  • The Kefauver-Harris Amendments of 1962, which were inspired by the thalidomide tragedy in Europe (and the FDA's vigilance that prevented the drug's marketing in the United States), strengthened the rules for drug safety and required manufacturers to prove their drugs' effectiveness.
  • The Medical Device Amendments of 1976 followed a U.S. Senate finding that faulty medical devices had caused 10,000 injuries, including 731 deaths. The law applied safety and effectiveness safeguards to new devices.
Today, the FDA regulates $1 trillion worth of products a year. It ensures the safety of all food except for meat, poultry and some egg products; ensures the safety and effectiveness of all drugs, biological products (including blood, vaccines and tissues for transplantation), medical devices, and animal drugs and feed; and makes sure that cosmetics and medical and consumer products that emit radiation do no harm.

I'm reading a good book called "Has Christianity Failed You?" by Ravi Zacharias.

Excellent book (though I cringe at the title). It's great for those of us Christians who are lagging in the middle of the race.

Gives us a nice kick (I mean boost) right where we need it :)

I see in the bible where God did not call aram to be abraham until AFTER there were PLENTY of enemies in the land waiting for him. Follow? We are born into this world completely SURROUNDED on all sides by our enemies. Though God is not their enemy they are Gods enemy. Therefore if you are born again you have 2 hundrd and 33 billion and 999 thousand enemies in your hometown and thats the good news. If you go to church you will find the highest percentage of people in there are also Gods enemies. So in reality you cant trust anybody. Except God of course.
If you are lucky enough to have a christian friend you are lucky but most likely they will let you down as well. Wanna hear a sob story? Im 55.as in FIFTY flippen FIVE years old! I was saved when I was 35. 20 years I been saved. I live with mt mother. In a 10 year olds room! I have no friends and my mother and stepfather are unbelievers. I have no trade because the const market has bottomed and it doesnt look like it will be back. I tried truck driving, what a fiasco that was. 2 years of pressure and misery. ended up bein fired with a bad DAC report so ill never be able to drive again. In other words I cant get a job! I havnt had a job in 2 and a half years!
It wouldnt be so bad but Im very talented and motivated to work. Im like the guy in the bible that says Im too old to labor so he went to his bosses creditors etc. Anyway, Im also in failing health. I used to be strong. I have COPD and a bad back, Lol.
I could go on. Alll my tools and stuff are in the pawn shop and my phone will be shut off friday. My truck barely runs. Lol its an 86 ford. Barely runs. The worst part is Im like you. LOSING my faith. that wouldnt be so bad but I believe you can lose your salvation. THAT is scary. A scholar once said, "the bible is meant to be read and discussed", I agree. Though, I have no one to discuss it with!
Good theology is just as frustrating because the peeps that actually know there bibles (very few indeed) dont agree. So its an argument. *.* fun. Try to share your faith sometime and see what happens. My parents are unbelievers. If you try to speak up for Jesus or the bible or God they walk away or argue or look at you like you are from mars. LOl.
If I take a stand Ill be living under a bridge somewhere. I see people like this. "The heart of man is decieptful and exceedingly wicked ABOVE ALL THINGS who can know it?" Man is so exceedingly wicked that it cant be fully understood. Thats pretty pathetic. I dont like people at all. Let alone love them. Of course I want the best for everyone but the best is Christ and they dont want Him.
One time I was told, "you are invited to the party but you cant preach", lol, this is the general attitude that permiates our society and the church too if you ask me. YOU are invited to the party but JESUS cant come. !!!!!!!
Oh the aloness....cant even have a verbal exchange with anybody that has meaning! Oh sure its ok, totalk about those COWBOYS or the weather, or "hi, how r you today, have a nice day" but that is idle , the bible says we will be JUDGED by every idle word! Its all just a convoluted mess.
If anybody reads this they will send me scriptures "OUT of context" and go on with there happy little lives. The truth is we are called to FIGHT! I dont like arguing, it saps my energy. If I stand up for Jesus in my own home Ill be thrown in the streets within 5 minutes.Maybe thats what I SHOULD do.
I could live in my truck behind the old supermarket. Its over 100 today though. Ide be dead by noon. So...........you think you got problems. Your recamending a book by Ravi Zacherius? Thats nice. How much does that book cost? Ive got 2 dollars and 38 cents, you take food stamps?
Have a nice day. OH, PS God loves you. Does that help?

Science shows a breath taking amount of evidence for the existence of God. I would encourage you to look at the links below. They deal with questions like: What scientific evidence is there for God? Who created God? Do the stars prove young earth creationists wrong? Is there a common morality/absolute truth? And so forth. There's a bunch of stuff in there that strengthened my faith. The Christian faith is not a blind faith, my friend, as I have come to realize. Please take note of this post and read over the research links that I've provided below.
