Hey Everyone,

This thread is inspired by a YouTuber I follow who is both extremely goal-oriented and yet promotes ways of slower living at the same time. I enjoy the balance she's trying to achieve and model for her audience.

One of the things she shared about herself is that she grew up in a farming family community -- she was surrounded by soil and those who worked it, and had tried to get away from it her entire life. But when she hit her 40's, she could "no longer deny the fact that it was in my blood," and has been vlogging about the amazing backyard garden she is creating.

Maybe it's because I'm adopted with no background information, but I've always been fascinated with what people learn or pick due to "nature" (biology) versus "nurture" (environment.)

One of the most intriguing passages in the Bible for me is 2 Timothy 1:5 in which Paul tells Timothy -- "I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you... (through the laying on of hands.")

I am always amazed by the way God puts characteristics into people and then passes them along through both biology and environment. I was thinking of my own family in which music was passed down from grandparent to child to grandchildren, even though the grandparent was never able to learn to read music -- it was all played "by ear."

Now I realize this can work both ways as well. I've always seemed to be more prone to depression than anyone else in my family, and I've often wondered if it was caused or exacerbated by biological factors that my birth parents might have passed on to me.

I would love to hear stories from people about what they believe is "in their blood" -- things they have "picked up" from their families, whether biological or environmental, and whether joyful or challenging.

* Name some traits such as hobbies, spiritual callings and gifts, or health issues that you believe are "in your blood."

* How have these things impacted your life, whether for the good or bad?

* What parts of these traits do you hope to pass on to your kids or others around you?

* And even if you or someone you know doesn't seem to have anything in common with your own family (that was me for a long time,) where do you think you "got it from?" (Do you think God just uniquely made you that way? Did you learn it from someone other than your family?)

Of course, this is a question that's open to everyone, and I look forward to hearing what anyone would like to share.

Odd you should use music as the example. I'm from a very musical family, and I'm a music nerd myself. I'm always singing or humming or something. (My family is just grateful I'm not always drumming on something like my father and uncles...)

While I don't understand people who don't care much for music, I'm grateful they are around. It would be very annoying if EVERYONE was always humming a tune under his breath.

interesting q Seoul

Spiritually born again and not knowing where this came from but I can speak another tongue though I have no idea what it is.

Otherwise, I seem to have no talent whatsoever for music, my parents are not really readers, though I am one. Mum hates gardening but I like it. I like dancing, but again nobody else in my family dances.

I cant really think of anything my grandparents passed on to me except, a liking for Chinese food!

what would I pass on to my kids. Well I think of all those at my school as my children as Im there for them (not just myself) so I just want to pass on a love of books and reading and a healthy sense of curiousity for finding out stuff.

If I can gift them time and books they can always, when they need a moment, go find a book and read it and feel better after reading. I dont need to teach meditation, all they need to do to relax is to crack open a book in a comfy space.

just to add, the gift of words definitely comes from God.

Imagine if we had no language. Also I think literacy eg reading is a gift too.

I cant remember being actually taught to read, but I think I picked it up before I learned to write.
I do remember some phonics from Sesame Street. They would have those words that flashed up on the screen like CH and AT and they would sound out the phonemes then put them together, to make CHATbut I dont conciously remember being taught that at school

Imagine going through life not knowing how to read or write. Your world would be pretty small. But lots of people do, or they lean on others for help. You cant take this for granted. Its a gift.

Nature or nurture, eh? ;) :)

I have always gravitated to animals, art and music. Pretty sure these are traits I inherited from my dad. He certainly encouraged all three while he was still alive. I've had plenty of animals through my life, actually pursued art as a career (successfully) and have also done quite abit musically speaking. I also have written short stories and some poetry so I guess you could say I am what some call a 'creative'

I used to wonder abit if art was kind of a waste as it does not seem to benefit other than to give pleasure to look at. But then we have the building of the tabernacle in the wilderness and how people who were gifted in creating and art were the ones to whom the creation was given. Actually, I always pray and ask God to help me with what it is I am creating.

Growing up, everyone thought I would be a veterinarian and at one time I did almost apply to become one, but personal circumstances prevented it. Sometimes people will still come to me with a sick animal or consult with me before going to the vet...I can give advice but I always encourage folks to follow up with a professional.

I really can say I cannot help what it is I am drawn to or interested in with regards to these things. I have worked at other things, but never with the same satisfaction or feeling of wholeness as when I am creating in one way or another.

So yeah, I would say these things are 'in my blood'.

I absolutely love humming! Most times I do it in public and wont always realise it, it just feels natural. Or maybe its an anxiety thing now that I think more on it. I once was humming this song in public about a decade ago and this guy I was near starting humming the same tune. I should have smiled at him but instead I gave him the death stare.

Hey Everyone,

The biggest that comes to mind is children, they always gravitated to me and I always felt natural around them.

* How have these things impacted your life, whether for the good or bad? Only for the good. Becoming a teacher was the next step.

* What parts of these traits do you hope to pass on to your kids or others around you? I like talking about God to the children in my personal life. At work it was a bit harder to do that because of the many beliefs and views but I have been lucky that a lot of schools Ive been to have a prayer time and I can model Christianity throughout the day.

* And even if you or someone you know doesn't seem to have anything in common with your own family (that was me for a long time,) where do you think you "got it from?" (Do you think God just uniquely made you that way? Did you learn it from someone other than your family?) My parents were teachers, there are several teachers in my immediate and extended family. So I believe I got it from my parents and also it is a gift from God. Tbh I didnt want to say what I do because then others might point out my grammar or diction errors lol

Another great thread from you Seoulsearch, thank you :)
Of course, this is a question that's open to everyone, and I look forward to hearing what anyone would like to share.

I guess computers are in my blood. They interest me and I don't know why. Airplanes interest me and I don't know why. Women interest me, and I don't know why. God interests me and I don't know why. At least not entirely. Cleaning interests me, and I don't know why. Art interests me, and I don't know why. In fact nothing that interests me, do I know why. But I don't consider myself to be "good" about anything. Sometimes I'm "better" at somethings then other people are. But I'm not never awesome at anything. I'm just good enough to get bye.

I'm not sure what traits (as you describe traits, not one's eye color, e.g.) are actually inherited or "in our blood". However, I will say that I see the possibility that some things may be genetic.

For me, I have a sweet tooth. So does my father. And, my uncle's an alcoholic (though he has it under control). I think there may be a correlation there. So, between that and my distaste for alcohol, I am not going to take up drinking, not even casually.

My uncles were very good illustrators. I may have inherited this tendency as well.

I have anxiety sometimes for no apparent reason. My mother has experienced that from time to time.

I say music for me. Also, my desire to do things with excellence come from my parents. Or perhaps doing things correctly the first time so I don’t have to do it again lol
