"Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”
26 And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” 27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.”
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said to him, [f]“Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

- John 20:24-29 NKJV

I have a question about this passage that I've been thinking about for a little while:

Why didn't Jesus show His back to Thomas? Or more accurately, why isn't it mentioned in Scripture as to whether He did or not?

Some extra-Biblical sources say that when Jesus was scourged by the Roman soldiers on the command of Pontius Pilate, that the whips they used ripped apart the flesh on Jesus' back. That is why I have the question about whether Jesus showed His back scars to Thomas.

What do y'all think?

Because Thomas only asked to see specific things, in order to Believe:

25 The other disciples therefore said to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.

He didn't ask to see the back.

Personally, I think Jesus' body was glorified after His resurrection and all signs that he'd been crucified were gone excepts those in his wrists and side. Some of the people who saw Him after His resurrection didn't recognize Him but no one said He looked like a walking dead man. Nowhere is it recorded that anyone thought He looked like He was recently crucified. The marks in His wrists and side remain as signs of the new covenant.

Find it extremely unlikely Jesus showed Thomas his back. I find it is always the best approach to just take the text as it says to understand it best. Besides this point though, I would think to reason both once Thomas saw where the nails had been and then even felt the holy wound where the spear had pierced him, I would think that would be enough even for the most doubting of Thomases. It seems upon touching the holy wound of the spear that Thomas believed immediately because he saw that this was Jesus resurrected indeed and not just some imposter, or a spirit, or him going mad, or a trick of any sorts. Blessed are those that believe Jesus was crucified and resurrected, though they did not see so much as Thomas, blessed is Jesus, praise Jesus.

Flogging, was such a common Roman practice, probably, many people looked like Jesus did afterwards. So to really distinguish, for Thomas, he said, show me the Hands and Side.

Well the answer is right there in that passage. Here is what Thomas asked for: “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.” So he got the precise answer to his request.

This makes sense, thanks!

It's commonly believed by a number of Christians that Jesus' crucified dead
body wasn't resurrected but instead was renovated, i.e. glorified.

Others believe his crucified dead body was taken away and the so-called
post resurrection appearances were performed by an angel cloaked with an
avatar.

if Jesus showed His back to Thomas, who knows if it would have made a difference? everything Jesus said & did was perfect. we can think of all sorts of things pertaining to; "why didn't Jesus do this or that"? Jesus wants us to believe in Him & the things He did with little evidence which h would produce greater faith!. He's not going to make it easier for us because we would only abuse, misuse & take life for granted even more.

I love how Jesus humbles Himself to our low abilities and helps us to believe. He understood Thomas' need to touch Him but, Jesus also knew He would be going away and no one would see Him anymore in physical form on the Earth. Jesus wanted Thomas to be able to believe without seeing.

The Holy Spirit is now on the Earth and gives us understanding and teaches us and shows us all things. The Holy Spirit opens the scriptures and teaches us Truth, as well as other things like comfort, guidance, counsel, correction...

Also, Thomas was probably a "Kinesthetic " learner. There are 3 learning styles... 1-Audio - they learn just by listening; 2-Visual - they learn by seeing; and 3 - Kinesthetic - they learn by touch.

In a vision, I saw Jesus' back.... it was completely shredded, flesh hanging out, bloody, swollen, so many splinters from the cross embedded deep within all the wounds of his back.... no words can describe it justly.....

Jesus Christ was murdered.... He was innocent... the place of the cross was the scene of a homicide...

In the vision I was weeping at the foot of the cross and could hear the women close by also weeping... I was trying to catch the blood falling to the dirt because the blood was too precious to just fall on dirt but, there was so much blood.... then, I realized, that's exactly what He was doing.... shedding His Blood on us, on dirt.

I tasted the blood in my hands, it tasted so strong of metal... there must have been a lot of Iron in His Blood....

The vision ended when I asked to not see it anymore, I was so overwhelmed and wept a long time... truly, Jesus Christ loves His Father's Will and us so very, very, very much!

I am sooooo glad He rose from the dead and is ALIVE forevermore! Hallelujah!:love:(y)(y)
