As usually happens I was looking up something on the internet and came across something that took my attention. The title of the book, the title to this thread, caught my interest. As Christians sometimes we have pat answers, or sometimes we don't have an answer when someone asks a question. I try to be well read on these questions that may perhaps come my way. I thought it might be interesting to see how some of these questions would be answered here in the BDF. If it get's too far afield I will drag it back to topic. Think that you are answering a new Christian, or someone who knows nothing about the Bible. You're not giving your answer to me, let's pretend a little, how would you answer these questions to someone who never opened the Bible, been to church or knows Christ. Ready??

Question One - How Can a Good God Allow so Much Suffering?

I give up on this one since it's the most difficult question for me.
Of course Biblically we all know why we are here, due to free-will, the fall and away from fellowship with God.
But with this being said, suffering seems very cruel, unjust and unfair to me, and sometimes it feels like it happens randomly. Like, why do children have to suffer for example?
The only thing that lifts me out of this dark corner is the message of Jesus Christ and of course miracles throughout history which show that for reasons unknown to us, God will intervene sometimes according to His plan. So we are required to have A LOT of Faith when we're dealing with Suffering.

I wouldn't try to answer their questions because these things are to be spiritually discerned, & sinners wouldn't be able to do that.
What I would do is admonish them to pray & give Jesus a chance to minister directly to them.
Once saved, those questions will no longer matter to them.:)

Question One - How Can a Good God Allow so Much Suffering?

And... go!
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:26‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD's:

But the earth hath he given to the children of men.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭115:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭6:5-7, 11-13‬ ‭

The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.

Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. ….for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.

The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭24:4-6, 17-20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

why does man blame God for death ?

“And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭2:16-17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

God told them how to live and not die they followed the lies which god said would be certain death

Or why do we blame God for the curse and desolation of Israel ?

See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; in that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it.

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:”
‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭30:15-19‬ ‭KJV‬‬

God warns man of evil and sin and death and cursings but we just keep ignoring him and corrupting the world more and more diseases wars violence those things came because god warned and said it ahead of time and people in authority did it anyways and introduced the curse into the earth like Adam for instance the first to do this he had dominion on earth and every human was in his body at this point

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; ( thou shalt not lest ye surely die ) and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭5:12‬ ‭

My point is God What any and never claimed to be a puppet master we’ve always had the freedom to choose good or evil as humans but his warnings are true adam ate the fruit and died then adams first born son murdered his second born son after they consumed the knowledge of good and evil which god said was certain death and Satan said it wouldn’t hurt then but help them

they followed Satans Will and died God is allowing time for people to repent and this world is filled with sin and death and destruction because of us

When he ends it no one else can be saved he’s allowing the world to continue for this reason

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

( we believers have a promise afterwards )
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:9-10, 13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

wickedness cursing turmoils differing death ect is here by our hand refusing his warnings all along all deeds will be judged after while we are on earth man is free and has choice and dominion whether we give it to God in Christ or Satan in the world is up To us

Question One - How Can a Good God Allow so Much Suffering?

And... go!
Suffering is a great way to learn obedience. So if by...so much...it means a quantity, then the answer lies in the great extent of disobedience. But if by...so much...it refers to how horrific suffering can be, then it is possibly because of what is revealed by suffering. We understand better the depth of the effects of sin, we understand the futility of trying to find life in anything other than God, and we begin to understand the unparalleled majesty of the excellencies of God. For example, consider the worst atrocity you can image. How does that compare to the suffering of Christ? And so, one begins to consider the length and width and breath of the love of God.
The problem with getting to such a point is that people generally can't get their focus off their situation and onto God.

Not just humans but all of creation suffers because of the fall, one reason we have to be kind to animals.

No, I do not have a convincing answer for a nonbeilever than the fall happened and so suffering ensues. And free will and how it can have a domino effect. Christians have accepted these answers.

Question One - How Can a Good God Allow so Much Suffering?

And... go!
"How Can a Good God Allow so Much Suffering?"

Here is the logical answer.
It won't make anyone feel better... but it still resolves the dilemma of the question.

1. This question presumes God cannot BOTH allow suffering, AND be good.... so this "question" is actually making a CLAIM.

2. This presumes there is NO GOOD REASON for the suffering... otherwise the suffering would have some good purpose, and be justified.

3. In order to KNOW there exists NO GOOD REASON, in the MIND of GOD, who KNOWS ALL THINGS... you would have to KNOW ALL THINGS... like God.

4. You cannot claim God has no reason, unless you know all things... just like God.

5. Wrap Up:
Logically, you are free to dislike the reasons you hear, but you cannot make a claim that God cannot have good reasons... because you have no way to know all that God knows. You simply have no way to access all the data that God would be using.

CONCLUSION:
- This is the logical answer to the "problem of evil."
- It is logically sound, and cannot be circumvented, and it's why most serious philosophers no longer bother with this question.
- However, it does come up in "popular discussion" a LOT. So it's good to be familiar with the problem, and with various answers.

A bit more on this:

There are two kinds of answers to this question:
A. A logical answer - (giving a logical defeater for the claims of the dilemma).
B. A pastoral answer - (giving examples, and possible explanations, to help the questioner feel better).

A.) The Logical Answer:
- The logical answer, as I outlined above, is very logically sound.
- It is a good logical defense, a defeater of the dilemma presented... but it doesn't give people any "warm fuzzies."

B.) The Pastoral Answer:
- This is where we give possible reasons, and examples of reasons, and try to help the questioner to get a sense of WHY God may do what he does.
- Cameron gave a good pastoral answer, if you look above.
- There are MANY good pastoral answers to this question... various examples and explanations, so the questioners just walks away feeling better.

There are often many angles, or perspectives, from which to answer a question, and if we learn several different perspectives, then we can choose the one which will most help the person we're talking with.

God Bless.

God is not responsible for the suffering that human moral agency has inflicted upon the world.

How Can a Good God Allow so Much Suffering?
It shouldn't be How can a Good God Allow Suffering -----it should be ----Why does a Good God allow so much Suffering ----

If I am ask that Question -----I say ------Why Shouldn't A Good God Allow so much suffering -------

A Good God out of His Agape for Us sent His Only Son to greatly suffer the most horrific brutal flogging --ripping flesh from His body ---Beating -to the point of being unrecognizable as a man --Mocking Him being the Son of God ----and then nailed Him to a Cross and pierced His side with a spear ------to Save us from our sins so we wouldn't have to endure what He did ------cause what He suffered --we deserve ------and Jesus willing took on this great suffering for us

No suffering that we could ever endure can even come close to what Jesus suffered for us -----God works all suffering out for Good --for those who Agape Him ====

God is a Good God who allows suffering --Suffering validates our Faith ---when your faith triumphs the suffering you know you have the right Faith -----it prefects us ----suffering strengthen us -----God's Grace is our strength in our weakness of our suffering --our trials --or persecution ----it humbles us to keep us from exhaling ourselves when we think we are this great Christian that knows it all -----Suffering can lead one to Repentance -----suffering leads us into prayer ---

Suffering has many benefits ---

Question One - How Can a Good God Allow so Much Suffering?

Because Suffering is nessecary FOR A TIME to bring about Gods eternal objective..

Suffering lets us know that something is wrong in this creation in this universe existence.. The problem is that we have obtained the knowledge of Good and evil without having the ability to resist using all this knowledge.. and in using the knowledge of evil we sin and thus are doomed to be judged by a perfect God.. The problem of suffering leads us to know our problem of Sin.. God has provided a just way for our transgressions to be atoned for by The sacrifice of the LORD Jesus who was executed on the cross thus paying the death penalty that was upon people who believe Jesus and trust in the Atonement of Jesus..

Also as individuals we only experience this faulty state of existence for a life time.. This life is not all suffering and mystery.. It is usually a mixture of suffering and joy, of good times and bad times.. After this is an eternity either with God in His perfect eternal existence or with satan in the eternal lake of fire..

A similar question is, why do people bring forth children into this world despite the suffering? We can't blame God just because He keeps the world going. There are probably some overlapping reasons. As we are made in the image of God, we kind of know how God thinks (although in a micro and flawed way).

A lot of parents do not want their children to have an easy life lest they become spoilt and arrogant. Parents want children to suffer at least a bit, for growth.

Actually, He's saving us from our self-destruction. We insist on evil, He's saving us from that.
