This test will tell you everything you need to know about someone you're interested in.

Ask them...

When you're cooking, and the instructions say to bake it for 8 to 10 minutes - how long do you put it in?

Do they put it in for 8 or 10 or do they split the difference at 9? Do they plan on 10 but check around 7, for just in case?

I'm telling you, the reply to this scenario WILL tell you EVERYTHING you may or may not want to know.

I set it for 8, but will turn the light on and peek through the window a little sooner to keep an eye on it as I know my oven heats up a little faster than most, but opening the door too much affects the heat setting. :) Experienced cooks also know that preheating and the type of pan you use (glass, non-stick, etc.) enter the equation as well, so you have to deal with it on a case by case basis. ;)

Also, if I set it for 10 and am doing something else, I may not immediately be able to drop whatever I'm doing and run for the stove. Setting it at 8 gives me a response time. :)

Well, first I would preheat the oven.

Then I will check it at 8, if it isn't done i will keep in there for a couple more minutes. THEN I am mostly likely to forget it is in there til te smoke alarm goes off.....and off to McDonalds I go!

THE CORRECT ANSWER IS:

There is nothing that bakes for only 8 to 10 minutes! That short a time means you are only heating up something thats already been cooked.

You're the noob. Cookies need a MINIMUM of 10 minutes. More like 12 to 20 minutes, unless you want your cookies to be like dough when you eat them.

The smoke detector is not the timer.

I also once lived in a house that you turned on the oven on a Monday to preheat and by Thursday it was good to go. Maybe Friday if cooking a full dinner.

Sorry Gabe,

I have to side with Still and Mega on this. I just checked a pack of cookie mix and the instructions state that you are to bake them for 8-10 minutes when using a dark pan.

Personally, cookies can be a little touchy--the cooking shows I've seen say to check on them a minute before the minimal baking time because of how differently ovens heat up and cook, whether or not you use a conventional or confection oven (that blows the heat around evenly, etc.)

I like chewy cookies, so I tend to check on them... let's say, at about 6 minutes and 55 seconds... And since I have a cheapie oven (read: no window), I have to actually open the door.

I also have to agree with Meg that I often check on an item halfway... sometimes shifting or moving the pan, depending on whether or not it looks like it cooks evenly. But don't worry Gabe, most of my cooking these days has been with your favorite appliance--the Easy Bake Oven... ERR... I mean, the Microwave... :)
