The 'Characters' counts are actually a little higher than the real counts - due to square brackets being used in the files to identify the italicized words.

The fact can be argued depending on what Bible version you are using, but by most reckoning, the very center of the Bible when measured by chapter count is Psalms 118.
Here are some other fun facts surrounding Psalm 118:
  • The longest chapter of the Bible falls just after this center chapter-- Psalm 119.
  • The shortest chapter of the Bible falls just after this center chapter-- Psalm 117.
  • There are exactly 594 chapters before Psalm 118, and exactly 594 chapters after it. When you add the number of chapters before Psalms 118 and those after, the sum is 1,118. And the verse at the very center of the Bible is Psalms 118:8.

I did not realize at the time I started the thread with the OP that the program I am using to count lines, words, and characters was counting newlines... :oops:

My [new] counts...

spaces: 758528 (the text only without verse numbers and their associated spaces)
periods: 26139
commas: 70686
hyphens: 679
colons: 12717
semicolons: 10151
letters only: 3228471

I am assuming that your '0-9' is referring to verse numbers.

verse numbers with a space before and a space after: 113929

everything except verse numbers with spaces: 4107371

everything including verse numbers with spaces: 4221300

difference between my total and your total = 135986

less semicolons and colons = 113118

difference between that and my verse numbers with spaces = 811

I am guessing something is different with regard to the verse numbers and their associated spaces...?

Verse numbers are not included in the total count, but I included numbers just to be sure no text that is talking something about numbers would be missing (I'm not actually sure if there are any plain number characters in the scripture).

I was stripping "unnecessary" characters off with this preg_replace pattern:
PHP:
$str = preg_replace("/[^A-Za-z'\.\, \-]/u", '', $str);
I modified the pattern a little, colon and semicolon characters are now also included:

Now the character counts are:

I was running the character counting on Bible Search dataset. if I recall correctly, the source Bible data material is from https://openbible.com/xls/bibles.xlsx

Many people mistakenly use the (incorrect) notion of there being "31,175 verses" in the Bible [there aren't--the OP has the correct number, on this point], and yet somehow still repeat the supposed fact that Psalm 118:8 is the center verse (though the "math" doesn't add up!) lol

Yes, it's a typo from the author and I actually looked at it and thought 'why doesn't 1118 match the middle Scripture Psa 118.8 (1188)' and was too busy to check it. God is very precise, lol.

I figured it was indeed a "typo" (and I "get" it about being too busy to check it). The only thing I would say here ^ , is that Psalm 118:8 is not "the middle Scripture" (the author of that piece was actually mistaken here).

God is very precise, lol.

I looked it up again and most think it is Psa 118:8 and it makes sense with the Psa before it and after being the longest and shortest Psalms. So either way I'm good with it.

Well, the ones claiming that "Psalm 118:8 is the middle verse" (which is "verse #15878"), are they ALSO claiming that there are a total of "31,755 verses in the Bible"? (nope, they themselves do not claim such--IF THEY DO CLAIM the total number of verses is other than what the OP chart shows, please show me what they claim as to that... I'd like to see what they say.)

The Maths: "15877 + 1 + 15877 = 31,755" (<--no one says there are that amount of total verses in the Bible, even the folks claiming that Ps118:8 is the middle verse! lol--This should be OUR FIRST CLUE that something just isn't "adding up" with what they are claiming! :D )




And I was mistaken in part of my earlier post (how easily we receive data without double-checking! LOL... I just went through and double-checked this)... instead of Psalm 118 being "the middle CHAPTER," it's actually Psalm 117 that is the middle chapter (with 594 chpts coming before this, and 594 chpts coming after this Ps117)...

I went through and counted the chpts via this [very basic / simple] site: How Many Chapters & Verses are in Each Book of the Bible (biblememorygoal.com). I seem to (vaguely) remember this from my youth, as well (re: Ps117). lol




But, even though this (Ps117) is the middle chapter "when counting BY CHAPTERS," neither Ps117 nor Ps118 contain the center verses--there are two since there is an EVEN NUMBER of total verses in the Bible; the OP is correct on this total number of verses, as is this site I just linked (check those sources out!); Therefore, Verse #15878 / Ps118:8 is NOT the middle verse. :)
