Welcome to CC! Many years ago we used to have live chat rooms, so it was a lot easier to just jump in and connect with people directly then.
These days it's a little trickier and a bit more work. There aren't any live chats and it doesn't look like they'll be coming back, so the only way left to meet people is to find threads (discussions) you're interested in and start chiming in. You might see a few regulars over time you want to contact and talk to more in-depth, or you can post threads of your own in various areas of the forum and see who answers.
Most people won't automatically jump in and try to get to know someone on a more personal level until they've gotten to know them after a while on the forum. I'm not sure what the current rules are, but I think it costs $25 for a year's subscription to be able to private message people? (Maybe someone who knows the current rules can pipe in here.) And some people only want to communicate on the forums without ever private messaging.
Members also have different profile settings. For some that have theirs set to public viewing, you'll see where they might have it set to where you can leave them a message and can ask them to contact you if they want and are allowed private messaging.
It's possible you might find people directly, but participating in the forums is almost a necessity the way things are set up now.
