Gen 14:10 - The kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled from the war

Gen 14:12 - Kings of Sodom and Gomorrah took Lot and his goods

Gen 14:16 - Abram rescued Lot; regained all his goods and his people

Gen 14:18 - Melchizedek king of Salem was named priest of the most high God

Gen 14:19 - King Melchizedek called Abram the most high God, processor of heaven and earth

Gen 14:22-23 - "And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth, That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:" Talk about the power the Lord!
We will encounter Mel again when we get to Hebrews in the NT, if not before.

GENESIS CHAPTER 17 NOTES

V1 - "And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect." - Second time the Lord appeared to Abram

V2 - Promises Abram again about multiply his seed, but this time stating it by covenant

V3 - "God talked with him"

V5 - God changed Abram's name to Abraham

V7 - "And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee." - What God does for those he loves. Forever grateful for the righteous men that found God's favor.

V10 - the importance of circumcision

V14 - what happens to those who are not circumcised

V15 - God changes Sarai's name to Sarah - never knew her name was Sarai before Sarah. Can't say for certain that I knew that about Abram to Abraham.

V17 - "Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed..." - This is the first verse that I can remember to mention "laugh" - who says that the Bible doesn't have humor😅 Abraham was in disbelief that God said Sarah should have a baby at (or past) 90 years old

V19 - God tells Abraham and Sarah to name their unborn son Isaac which he will establish an everlasting covenant with him

V20 - God tells Abraham of Ishmael's blessings

V21 - God tells them that they will have Isaac by the next year around the same time

V22 - "...God went up from Abraham."

V23-27 - Abraham circumcised everyone in his household, blood relative or not. Abraham was circumcised at 99 years old! It is routine in some countries to have circumcision at birth unless the parents' object to it. The Bible shows that circumcision was done in adulthood at all different ages.

GENESIS CHAPTER 15 NOTES

V2 - Abram is worried about not having an heir

V5 - The Lord reminds Abram that his seed shall be plenty

V6 - Abram believed the Lord

[GN 15:6. Abraham’s faith in the Lord was credited to him as righteousness. This was a major theme of the teaching of the apostle Paul in his epistle to the Romans (RM 4:3,9-12&16-17). This is why Paul teaches that a true Jew is one whose “circumcision is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code” (RM 2:29). Thus, all who become one with Jesus are spiritual Jews and God’s chosen people (EPH 2:13-3:6), although it is possible that the political nation of Israel may play a further role in history before the eschaton.]

V8 - Abram questions the Lord how will he inherit the land he is promised
[Questioning God is good and what A&E should have done.]

V13-14 - "And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; And also that nation, whom they shall serve shall I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance." - History repeating itself. Abram and Sarai went into Egypt and came out with riches. Both Pharaohs were plagued before both left Egypt.

V15 - "And thou shalt go to they fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age." - I just noticed that there has been no mention of hell yet. Only that God created heaven and earth. When people passed at this time, where did they go? The Lord promised that Abram will go to his fathers in peace, where?
[Yes, the OT does not show much awareness of resurrection to judgment.]

V16 - "But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full." - not clear on the meaning. What was the iniquity of the Amorites. The Amorites is a family of the Canaanites. Canaan was cursed because of his father Ham's action towards Noah.

V18 - Third time the Lord promises Abram Land, this time as a covenant. His seed was given land from the river of Egypt unto the river Euphrates.

GENESIS CHAPTER 16 NOTES

V3 - Sarai gave Abram an Egyptian maid to be his wife because she could not bear children

V6 -Sarai dealt hardly with Hagar for what she permitted. This may be why the Lord blessed Hagar the way He does

V9 - Hagar obeys the angel of the Lord to return to Sarai

V10 - Promise made to Hagar about multiple seed

V11- The Lord heard the affliction of Hagar

V15- Ishmael was born
[We should note that Muslims view the birth of Ishmael as equally important with that of Isaac, because it resulted in Islam, a religion they view as superior to Judaism and Christianity.]

[We must not understand this verse as disallowing the New Covenant, but rather as paving the way for Messiah and His law of love.]

V10 - the importance of circumcision

[We should understand physical circumcision as symbolic of circumcision of the heart, which is what is salvific per Paul in RM 2:25-29.]

V14 - what happens to those who are not circumcised

GENESIS CHAPTER 18 NOTES

V1 - "And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;" - third time that the Lord appeared to Abraham previously known as Abram

V2 - "And he lift up his eyes and looked and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them for the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground," - In the previous verse it said that the Lord appeared unto him (Abraham previously known as Abram). Now it is being explained how Abraham previously known as Abram saw the Lord. He "saw them" (the Lord and two other men). This also shows that that the Lord visually is male. Abraham ran to meet them and bowed himself toward the ground.

V4 - Abraham offers to wash the Lord's feet - honor and respect

V6 - Showing further the amount of respect and love Abraham has for the Lord

V9 - "And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent." - "...they said unto him..."

V10 - And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son..." - " And he said, I..." in the previous verse it said "they"

V12 - "Therefore Sarah laughed within herself..."

V13-14 - "And the Lord said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am I old? Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son." - The power of God!

V15 - "Then Sarah denied, saying, I laugh not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh." - Intense! The Lord will call you out to your face!

V17 - "And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;" - not clear on what he should hide

V20 - "their sin is very grievous" - more description of how bad it was in Sodom and Gomorrah

V22-23 - "And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the Lord. And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?" - Abraham stood before the Lord. "And Abraham drew near..."

V25 - "...Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" 🫨 I would have extremely nervous to say that in front of the Lord😬😅

V26 - "And the Lord said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes."

V27 - Abraham shows you how to question authority with respect

V32 - "And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake." Abraham continually respects the Lord when questioning him. This is what we all need to remember to exercise regarding humility (which is in my prayers) Even when you feel you are right or are right, always exercise humility. Humility will bring forth patience, respect, and love. The Lord said he would not destroy Sodom and Gomorrah for the sake of 10 righteous people being found in the city.

GENESIS CHAPTER 18 NOTES

V1 - "And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;" - third time that the Lord appeared to Abraham previously known as Abram

[It appears to me that the speculation most likely to be correct concerning these theophanies is that they were angels, since Jesus is the only incarnation of God the NT affirms.]

GENESIS CHAPTER 19 NOTES

V1 - "And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;" - Two men left from the Lord (three men) when he was talking to Abraham in the previous chapter. Now two angels arrive to Sodom

V2 - "And he said, Behold now, my lords...." - "lords" is not capitalized

V3 - Lot had a lot of respect for the Lord's angels to convince them to stay in his house instead of on the streets. He fed them a feast. Love and honor.

V8 - What Lot was willing to do to protect the angles of the Lord

V10-11 - The angels of the Lord protected Lot and attacked the men that were after them

V12 - the angels of the Lord warn Lot to flee with his family and his belongings

V14 - Lot warned his sons in law "...But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law."

V15 - "And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city."

V16 - instructions to Lot and his family "...look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed." - Earlier it stated the plain of Jordan it was well watered before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Now they are being instructed not to stay in all the plain.

V20 - "Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live." - not clear "(is it not a little one?)" is in "( )" and what is the meaning

V21 - he agreed to not overthrow the city that Lot spoke of

V22 - the name of the city was called Zoar

V24 - "Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;"

V25 - "And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground."

V26 - Lot's wife looked back and became a pilar of slat

V30 - Lot left Zoar with his daughters to the mountains

V32 - Keeping the seed shows to be of high importance - not sure how to make comment on this act. Deception was also used to commit these acts.

V36 - 🤯

V37 - Moab's father was Lot and his mother, Lot's daughter. Moab is the father of the Moabites, seeds of Lot.

V38 - Benammi is the father of the children of Ammon: seeds of Lot

GENESIS CHAPTER 20 NOTES

V2 Abraham calls Sarah his wife in the land of Gerar where Abimelech is king.

V3 - The power and fear of God!

V4 - King Abimelech questions God. He claimed to be a righteous nation. Noted that he had not come near Sarah. It may be likely God warned him in a dream because he was a righteous nation.

V5 - King Abimelech is defending himself with integrity

V6 - "And God said unto him in a dream, Yea, I know thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I also withheld thee from sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her." - God was warning King Abimelech in a dream not to sin and sin agaisnt Abraham. God curses the people that curseth Abraham.

V7 - God refers to Abraham as a prophet. The punishment from God for hurting Abraham is great!

V9 - King Abimelech questions Abraham

V11-13 - Abraham answers why he claimed Sarah as his sister. V12 "And yet indeed she is my sister; she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife." - Another discredit to those who claim "god the mother" - Abraham and Sarah were brother and sister through God the Father.

V14 - Abraham gained riches from a king again

V17-18 - God's protection of Abraham is great!

I don't think where one begins reading GW is crucial, but believing what I think I know now, I recommend beginning with the Gospel of Matthew, then John, then Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians and Hebrews before going to Genesis, then Exodus and then alternate more of Paul's epistles with Psalms, etc., so that as one reads the OT he is able to interpret it in the light of the NT.

However, I am happy to provide commentary pulling from the NT as we read thru the OT when I think it will help us have the proper NT perspective. :geek:

Thank you for the advice!🙏

I personally believe I need to read the Bible in sequential order from Genesis to Revelation before I analyze any chapters out of the order in which it was written.

Regarding commentary, do what brings you joy in the spirit of Jesus Christ! I personally do not read the commentary on scriptures ahead of where we are presently because this is my first read from Genesis to Revelation. It might be helpful to others in Jesus Christ who have read the entire Bible😀

What is being speculated here? The Bible clearly states the Lord appeared unto Abraham on multiple occasions. It specifically says three men. It specifically states that one of them is the Lord. In later verses we see that the other two men were called "angels of the Lord." The Lord, stayed and talked with Abraham. I know you have read ahead. From my perception, thus far, it is stated in the text of the Bible that the Lord appeared unto Abraham multiple times. I will definitely read the context of what is written in the New Testament when I have read up until that point😀

V32 - "And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake." Abraham continually respects the Lord when questioning him. Like the time of Noah, thanks for the reminder😀

It's been a busy day here, so pardon me for being late!

Chapter 11

I also believe that when the Lord said, "let us go down" this means the Trinity.

The Lord told them to chapter 9, "Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth." Did they do that? No. Stubborn people. So, He came down and did it for them.
---
Chapter 12 & 13

Abram obeyed God and left his country and kindred.
Abram is promised offspring.
Abram and Sarai are protected by God from the Pharoah.
No matter what situation we are in, we do well to obey God and to trust in His promises and know He is with us in all situations.
---
Chapter 14

Melchizedek, meaning King of Righteousness. Though he has a small part, he's an important figure in the Bible. I am one of those who believes he is one of Christ’s pre-incarnate appearances.
---
Chapter 15

God tells Abram of the future enslavement in Egypt, and the following exodus from there.
---
Chapter 16 is a good lesson on being patient with the Lord's timing in all things (speaking of the situation with Hagar).
---
Chapter 17

OT circumcision. In NT, we have circumcision of the heart.
---
Chapter 18

Verse 4 grabs my heart. Is there anything too hard for the Lord? No!

We know Sodom and Gomorrah is going to be destroyed. At the end of this chapter, the Lord promises Abraham that He will not destroy it if 10 righteous are found there. Clearly, the Lord's mercy is great! But, unfortunately, there wasn't even that many righteous people there.
---
Chapter 19

The men of Sodom surrounded the door of Lot's house and wanted to "know" Lot's visitors. A ghastly thing. We will read a similar thing happen in the book of Judges...except in that story it doesn't involve angels.

Lot's daughters bore a son each of their father and they would become 2 pagan nations.
---

Chapter 20

Sarah was just described a short while ago as being well stricken with age. Now, she is taken again by a king. I want to know what supplements and skin care she was using :p
