Must one obey Jesus to be saved?

Yes!! One must obey Him (Heb. 5:9).

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him

What’s the negative of this?

If one does not obey, they will not have eternal salvation!!

When one becomes a Christian are they obeying Christ or disobeying?

Rom. 6:17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

It was only when they obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine that they had been made free from sin!!

Being then made free from sin.

When were they then made free from sin?

When they obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine!!!

Jesus graciously teaching us to experience being an obeyer God's law is intrinsically the way that he is giving us his gift of saving us from not being an obeyer of it.

That's silly. If that's all you think that Jesus saved us from, you don't understand the Christian gospel... as you have amply demonstrated.

I would say obedience is the product of salvation not the other way around he said we must be born again to be saved but he also said if ye love keep my cvommandments so love is what makes us obey

Obedience only makes sense in the context of an ongoing relationship. There must be a beginning point at which there is no "obedience" yet, but there is salvation. Otherwise, salvation depends on obedience.

In Titus 2:11-13, our salvation is described as being trained by grace to do what is godly, righteous, and good, and to renounce doing what is ungodly, so we are not required to have first done those works in order to earn our salvation as the result and we are not required to do those works as the result of having first been saved, but rather God graciously teaching us to experience being a doer of those works is part of His gift of salvation.

I w agree I myself am still learning to submit to his will in surrender that is a training process that is not easy to learn. and obeying him well we all fall short I like to think of it as learning a new craft that is new to us even when given instuction on what to do we still need a lot of practice to learn it well and even then experts can still make mistakes

Obedience to Christ makes sense for those who DESIRE to have a relationship with Christ, as well as those who DO.

They were made free from sin. When? When they OBEYED from the HEART that form of DOCTRINE which was delivered.

So, yes, our salvation is conditional on our obedience to the authority of Jesus, because if we do not obey Christ we will not be saved!! God did His part by sending Jesus..Jesus did His part by dying for our sins…the Spirit did His part in revealing the truth to record…and we do our part in obeying the truth to be saved!!

You don't believe obedience earns salvation, but you imply that obedience is necessary prior to salvation. Those two things are mutually exclusive.

Upon hearing the gospel one then believes the gospel and will receive the Holy Spirit.

At this point in time, one can then pursue some form of obedience to Jesus.

May I ask what the goal of that obedience to Jesus Christ would consist of?

Of course, we can't earn a free gift.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Salvation is a gift not earned and thus is not maintained by anyone other than Jesus Christ himself our obedience does not maintain it rather it proves it

The people at the Church of Rome..when were they said to then been free from sin?

Was it BEFORE they obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine..or AFTER?

Paul clearly tells us that they were servants of sin [which would be referring to their pre-conversion] but then he reminds them they had “obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you”.

Then, he tells them “Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.”

They became servants of righteousness when they obeyed the doctrine that was delivered to them.

How do I know?

Because until they did, they were servants of sin, “BUT ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.”

Thus, having obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered to them freed them from sin, and they became servants of righteousness. All by God’s mercy and grace.

Belief in the fullness of His teaching. Following His leading. Seeking His help in overcoming sin and becoming like Him.
