Hey Everyone,

This was inspired by a chat friend saying that he had a sweet tooth the size of a whale. 🐳

I always say I don't have A Sweet Tooth -- unfortunately, I seem to have a Full Set of Sweet Teeth. Sugar is the constant bane of my existence that I am always fighting against.

My Mom is very health-conscious and I credit her for keeping us away from fried foods, but she also tried to keep us away from too much sugar, and when I left home (now being able to purchase my own groceries,) my Sugar Monster has run amok ever since.

And so, now I'm interested in what everyone else's sweet tooth might look like?! :D

* Can you remember what started you on sweets?

* What tips do you have for keeping your sweet tooth under control? Have you lost your taste for sweets over time?

* Do you also have family members you have to keep an eye on so they don't eat too many sweets? What's your best advice for doing so, especially if they're grown adults? (A good friend and I are trying to keep older family member's health numbers in check.)

* If you are one of the lucky people who doesn't like/never craves sweets, what other things do you crave instead?

Just for fun, I'm going to post a poll with visible answers so we can all see where we stand in the rankings!

Go ahead and choose your answers -- surely 4.5 out of 5 dentists would recommend this thread! (The other 0.5 is only holding out because he's trying to maintain his dentistry license!)

P.S. Just to clarify...

I chose multiple answers for myself because I'm pretty sure they all still apply.

As for also having A Different Kind of Tooth, I've also been cursed with Potato Chip Teeth along with my Sweet Teeth, but I've had better luck curbing that one with baked potatoes instead.

I'm looking forward to hearing What Kind of Teeth YOU all have!! :D

You are asking at least one pre-diabetic, and this one has one the size of Gibraltar. Just not fair.

Lol!

You definitely get The Trophy of Honesty Award, @JaumeJ! 🏆

I totally understand your pain. I've been fighting against pre-diabetic numbers for years -- my doctor says I could probably turn it around with diet, if I resort to eating salads and celery. BLEH!

I always said that if God wanted me to eat rabbit food, He would have made me into a rabbit! 🐇🐰 But, I know health is crucial, so I keep fighting.

You're not alone! We're all in this together. 🫑🍄‍🟫🥕🫛🍅

Thank you so much for posting! :D

I had blood work done recently, for standard checks and also post cancer-care screening. My closest sister, who is a retired emergency room nurse of well over thirty years, wanted me to make sure my AC1 was being tested. That is the test for diabetes. I have mentioned my sister to my family doctor so many times, she said, tell your sister everything is normal LOL. That included my AC1, which is a relief, as diabetes is in my family. In fact my closest sister's youngest daughter was one of the youngest ever to be diagnosed with type one... probably because my sister caught the symptoms very early. My niece is in her mid twenties now, and this condition and all she has to do to manage it and how it limits her choices and impacts her life in other ways has become a terrible burden to her... and my sister has as much as possible resigned herself to the fact that diabetes is notorious for taking people early. I think of these things when I consider my own sweet tooth, or teeth. I just recently gave up eating a piece of apple pie every day. I used to eat a lot of chocolate... not all at once, but years ago I purchased dark chocolate bars regularly, which is something I do not do any more either. I have given up other things as well: sweet danishes and muffins for example. And I have used stevia probably for decades at this point... so am actually kind of wondering how else I can manage my sweet tooth, with pie out of the picture once again. Maybe I should just go back to eating an apple a day. That was a healthy habit... Lord knows I am short on those!

I have been trying to get more nutritional value and fibre into my diet via veggies for a while, but with my terrible track record for food prep and use any more, have opted to buy from the salad bar ONLY what I know I will consume very soon, because otherwise, my cupboards and fridge get filled with food stuffs that sit too long and then, especially the fruits and veggies, into the garbage they go. And I hate wasting food. We have so much, and some have so little. Of this I am well aware. Anyways, I decided that along with the sliced peppers and roast chicken and feta cheese I buy from the salad bar for my pizza and pasta, I will add more greens, like kale (LOL) and also other colourful foods which are supposed to be nutrient rich, like shredded carrots, shredded beets, and did I put in a little shredded radish as well? I may have. Last night I bought a box of food from the salad bar that was close to $30.00. Now that sounds like a lot, and maybe it is, but I mixed it into a large pot of pasta I cooked up, and had a small bowl of that for dinner; it was quite filling, and there are probably at least three more meals left over. Anyways, I am amazed that it took me so long to figure out a routine that works for me, but it is not like nothing has changed over time in my life, either. I recall the days when I would spend an hour chopping up veggies to make my meals. Haha. Really! And then I bought one of those veggie slicer/dicer deals at a fair grounds when I went to see Don Henley in concert, and I swear, it was probably the best thirty dollars I ever spent in my life, because the amount of time I spent chopping slicing and dicing veggies after that was greatly reduced. With my mobility issues and other serious conditions such as laziness and procrastination I just don't wanna do any of that type of food prep any more. Nope. I will gladly pay someone else to do it for me, and so, salad bar, here I come!

I know one guy who says of sweets, "If I've got room for a slice of pie, I've got room for another pork chop."

Fine. I'll give you one of my pork chops and take your slice of pie.

Sometimes, I just like one of those big cookies you get from Chick-fil-A.

I also like chips and salsa.

I'd say before birth  I mean, it's not really a joke, my mother loved sweets.

* What tips do you have for keeping your sweet tooth under control? Have you lost your taste for sweets over time?
I'm still working on being disciplined. I'm pretty good at making delicious desserts, which doesn't help. I just need to stay outta the kitchen!

This doesn't apply to me, but it made me think of my grandmother. She wasn't that keen on sweets. She'd have some homemade cobbler with a scoop of ice cream on the rare occasion in the summer, but she wasn't really a sweets person. But, what she didn't eat in sweets she made up for in beer!

---

Ice cream is a big weakness of mine. I've been doing really well this year though. After going cold turkey on ice cream and pizza at the beginning of the year, I found that I craved pizza more and ended up cracking and getting pizza about a month and a half into the year lol. Having said that, my sweet tooth is still pretty crazy. I had to ban myself from making whoopie pies or tiramisu, those are serious weaknesses for me.

Oh man, CarriePie, you just expertly laid out exactly why I've never put much time or effort into cooking or baking.

I'd be a GONER if I did!!

I have this thing where I'll fixate on one thing and try to find a perfect recipe for it.

One time it was fettucine alfredo -- and so I was eating alfredo at some point every day for months (we all know that NO good can come from that!)

Another time, my obsession was sugar cookies -- plain flour and sugar sugar cookies, cream cheese sugar cookies, sour cream sugar cookies... I always had some kind of sugar cookie dough around and, with no one to share them with, was eating cookies continuously for several MORE months.

I've known a lot of wonderful cooks, but I need ones like you who can also teach the fine art of control. I talked in another post about a woman at church who could make cakes and lasagnas that would make your soul feel like it was already at the pearly gates, but it came with a cautionary tale -- she was very upfront about the fact that she was trying to lose 120 pounds to get back to a healthy weight.

And I knew I'd never be able to make her recipes, or anything else too scrumptious, because I'd be worse than a freight train that's gone off the rails!

Kudos to you for knowing your limits -- and sticking to them! 🏆❣️😻

I don't crave sweets, but if I dip my hand in the bowl I'll keep re-dipping until the product is gone... just because it is there. I'm drawn to salty foods. Still, I can appreciate good quality sweets. It would be hard for me to turn down pastries with a fruit filling (not apple). I'm only missing 2 teeth so far!

I love sweets, especially something creamy with some crunch like cheesecake. But my family is pretty health conscious and I like to reduce the sugar when I bake something. My mom eats a pretty much keto diet because of blood sugar issues, so sometimes I'll make a keto friendly dessert and it's still delicious even with erythritol instead of sugar!

One thing I love is fancy hot drinks, like London fog or chai. I rarely use sugar when I make these at home. Instead I sub honey and stevia.

But when I go out im not so picky. I love icecream and stuff like that lol. I just try to be moderate! Usually lol

A contribution on the source of diabetes. Diabetes is passed down from the maternal grandmother, skipping a generation. For example my mother's mother was diabetic. My Mother had no problem with diabetes even though she passed on the proclivity to her children. I have one surviving sister who has dealt with full blown diabetes since the late 1950s. She has been my hero all these decades since.
Other fellow siblings have had bouts of the same in later life, and now it seems it is my turn to tumble.
My own experience has been a bout of hypoglycemia about 50 years ago, the which I managd to thwart by diet. That had dthe weirdest of symptoms, but that is another story,.
I never was big on sweets until I as 78 or 79, when gradually I began to eat and crave just about anything sweet. That caused urinary tract problems and some insomnia from time to time.
When I was made aware of the peril which had befallen me, I began to control my sweets cravings and lost a bit of weight, but I still love SUGAR. You are invited to pray for my gluttony. I know our Father hates such things, and I do too. God bless all who care and those also who do not, amen.

Now that you have mentioned it, my sweets dependency began when I started making pies mainly apple and pumpkin, and when the sweet potatoes ae on sale, those were just fine. I think I immediately branched out to sugar treats of every genre. Thanks, I needed that.

I can be normal human with a decent sugar/sweets consumption... just rarely..

As as little kids we were not "allowed" to candies at home, which I think is good. Dried fruits etc were out sweets. Of course we had cakes and cookies for birthday or if someone was visiting our parents we got to eat whatever was on the table too.

But later I got a taste for sweets, maybe around the time I got type 1 diabetes. Which really makes me crave for sweets if I have high blood sugars.

For me, if my Magnesium intake is proper, I tend to lose my sweet tooth, or the whole set of them..
not if it is my night shift week, then lack of sleep makes me raid my cupboards for anything sweet.

I also have a cheese tooth, which I am currently trying to yank out, by having only one type (maybe two) of cheese in my fridge (contrats to 8 differents cheeses waiting for me I had a while ago..:cautious:).

My coffee tooth aches sometime too, but with coffee, you gotta have something sweet, right?

Today I made a marble cake with dark chocolate for my aunt, but I had to taste it, she won't notice.. :D

Ooh, @CarriePie you just made me want to make Crème Caramel with that dessert comment!
I have to fight with myself everytime I make it, to not to eat more than one ramekin of them at one sitting (well, I have to get up to get the second one..)! And I like them warm, almost straight out of the oven..

Now that I think, maybe not different kind, but variations, I guess.. ah, my English skills :censored:

Blue cheese
White cheese
White cheese with chilli
Black lable emmental
Feta cheese
2 different cheddars
Cottage cheese (I think it is similar to what we have in here)
Does cream cheese count?

Dearest Tazzo,

I think you might be past the point of having just a Cheese Tooth.

I'm wondering if maybe you might be part mouse! :D 🐭🧀
