That is empathy.
No it's not.

empathy noun
The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another.

That's empathy. Which again, is not a real thing. Whatever you might conjure in your imagination about another persons feelings, thoughts or experience has an extremely low chance of being exactly the same as their actual feelings, thoughts, or experience.

I'm not sure you can disprove empathy anymore than you can disprove love.

Looks like a false equivalence to me. One is real, the other isn't- I'm just warning people about the one that isn't. I don't need to disprove anything.
It's downright popular these days though. Almost as popular as autism, attention deficit disorder, PTSD and introversion combined.

I think you and he are talking about different kinds of empathy.
It's pretty crazy because if you look up the coining of the term, it was about someone projecting their feelings onto a piece of artwork. I think now, it's just people conjuring up feelings that they think someone is feeling and projecting them onto that person, and then saying "I feel what they feel". Except they don't. Like if somebody says "My cat died, and I am sad"; I can feel my sadness for the cat's death and that person's misfortune; but it's not the same as that person's sadness. Even if I ask creepy probing questions about their relationship with their cat to determine just exactly how sad they are in order to copy their sadness, it's still not the same.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure tourist is talking about a different kind of empathy than that. But he thinks you are talking about his kind, so he is disagreeing with you.

Why would you think the original text was in English?
If you're sleepy, shittim; then take a nap. I know the original text wasn't in English; but even the English versions were written before the term "empathy" was coined in the early 1900's. The term has only become used commonly very recently with the explosion of pop-psychology. I think there's only one version of the bible that uses the word "empathy" and they just replaced where it is normally translated "sympathy".

A lot of people call that empathy these days, but technically it is telempathy, the ability to feel what somebody else is feeling. This ability presupposes either a miracle, a mutation or a magical spell. A lot of people sure do claim this ability though.

The only real instance I have seen of this ability is a very specific one, for a very specific purpose. Sometimes when our pastor puts his hand on someone's shoulder to pray with him, God will put what that person is feeling on our pastor. Anything from a hangover to depression to a sore shoulder. (Our pastor has recently developed a strong sympathy for people who have clinical depression...) This is only so our pastor will know how to pray for somebody, or what to do to help him.

This is not a free floating ability God gives our pastor all the time though. It is a very specific function God does, for a very specific reason. God doesn't share people's dirty laundry just for kicks. It is not an ability our pastor has, it is something God does at certain times. Again, it is not an ability our pastor has, it is something God does at certain times. And our pastor doesn't go around bragging that he is an empath, or even a telempath.

And our pastor has been heard to say that he prays he never develops depression himself...

As long as he doesn't let the sun set on his wrath he shouldn't; unless it's a bio-chem issue; but more often with Christians it is failing to turn over their indignation to God- so it turns to sorrow in their sleep, and then they can't figure out why they are so sad, even when it seems like nothing bad is happening.

^^^ Just for clarity; I think the actual reference point is the setting of the sun, and not just anytime before you go to bed. I didn't make that distinction until maybe a week ago- but the heuristic "don't go to bed angry" I think might not be specific enough to satisfy God's expectations.

The word "love" most often used in the new testament means, "seeking the highest good of the other person and doing what is possible to do to meet that need".
That is empathy. Any Christian should know this.
Jesus' command to His disciples, and if we call ourselves Christian we are His disciples, after accepting Christ as savior is to heal, cleanse, cast out, preach, etc.
Not merely to attend church once a week.
Sympathy merely feels sorry, compassion and empathy will move to alleviate the trouble.

the definition of love above is so monstrous in meaning. that's quite neat.

Thank you for your reply Sir 🙂

Hi friend, in the Greek one word might require a paragraph to define the meaning, The word "I will" that Jesus used when the man asked "if you would, I could be healed", or thereabout, I have heard it taught the meaning of "I will" translated as "it is the very nature of who I am that you be well, whole, healed and restored".
