I'm not proud of it, but in all honesty, I have shoplifted in the past. It was a time when I was very low on money. I got caught and ended up having to pay a hefty fine, which hurt me pretty bad at the time. That was the end of my shoplifting days. All kinds of people are shoplifters; some you'd never suspect.

Sad state of affairs really. You are right about Walmart though, if you shoplift there you are probably going to get caught. I remember working there a few years ago in Florida. 3 or 4 times a day local law enforcement was called to arrest those that were caught. The police should have just opened a precinct there to save time and expense.

I'd go to another aisle and there he was, coming around the corner. Finally, I'd had enough of it and so I stopped him and said "If you want to catch someone stealing, don't be obvious about it; watch them from a distance or peak around from a corner or something, don't let them know you're watching them.". The guy stopped following me and never did it again, or maybe he took my advice and watched me more discreetly lol.

I think I remember shoplifting some candy as a kid. Then stole something else as an adult, felt guilty later and paid for the item but left it there. Once I had a coat on layaway and I remember paying for it and grabbed a sheet of wrapping paper and my policeman husband and I were walking and talking in the mall with the coat and I looked in my hand and there was the unpaid for wrapping paper, we walked back to the store and paid for it. So I shoplifted with the police and didn't get caught....lol My bad.

Got caught once when I was 12 or 13. My brother was caught with me too. Left the store in handcuffs and taken to the police station. There they called my dad to come and pick us up, this after getting a lecture on being a good citizen. We were not actually arrested though.

60% seems kinda high. Total shrink reported by retailers in 2022 and 2023 were less than 2% and only 66% of that is theft. So if somebody is charging double because of shoplifting they are either really really bad at loss prevention; or they are gouging.

I think what they mean is that 60% have shoplifted, past tense and not present tense. So if anyone at anytime in their life shop lifted they would be included.

I suspect the point they are trying to make is that if you took a piece of gum as a kid you are not that different from these looters who are doing these smash and grabs.

The question of course they are not addressing is what percent of that 60% have repented?

I should have called the police right then. The manger did nothing. They know that their employees steal more than even shoplifters except for the cities.

One of the Dollar stores in a nearby city went out of business recently because of shoplifters. My local dollar stores, and Walmart put all the Mom and Pop/ brick and mortar stores out of business by their evil corporate techniques and ability to buy politicians (bribe and steal wealth through corruption) for the covid years.

The other issue is demographics.
City crime that is anywhere near gt housing projects has a faaar higher crime rate than the rural stores. There's a lot in country stores too though.

I have dozens of mirrors that I was going to install along walls and cameras as deterrence to shoplifters and robbery. After all my savings was spent on the store before it could be fully stocked and family issues before the hospital staff murdered Mom, that dream couldn't happen.

They said most of their lost items come from the employees. They are watching the employees not the customers, because they don't care about them. They showed employees walking out the store with whole shopping carts full of stuff. And that also the employee would let certain customers do the same.

They then said it was federal offense and you will get a felony if you do it. So if you work at DG and steal something, they are going to catch you, because I know they have the entire store wired.

I've taken a container of coconut water off the shelf and put it in the freezer to cool it down to buy after shopping. The manger shows up nearby checking me out and I say Good, I'm ready to check out now.

I assume the majority of employees are like the majority of customers. Most are honest and won't steal. The ones who do are a reason for the profit loss being passed along to the others like you said.

Everything cost so much more than it did 10 years ago. Savings is going to that hidden tax called inflation and devaluing the dollar. My plans for retirement right now is work.

I think the source you cited is good to bring it to everyone's attention. As morality goes down with the lack of Bible based church outreach, crime will get worse as we see the day approaching .

I've worked in retail for years. It will always surprise me ,those lengths people go to and what they will steal.

Once,our security stopped two women with a train of three carts full of high end frozen and fresh seafood and beef.

The other consideration in all this as per the corporate retailers is,they deduct $losses from shrink in their corporate tax returns.

And,they have insurance against losses of that nature.

So,while every retailer will say their prices go up due to many factors including theft,the reality is,they can raise prices as they wish. Because,we are a consumer society that depends on them for what we need to survive.

The local Walmart jacked the price of Isopropyl alcohol to a little less than $4.
And not because it's bottled and imported from China so to lay blame on tariffs. It's because they can. And do.

Last year I bought a large bag of Purina Naturals Original Flavor cat food.
The next day, I stopped in to get something for my husband. A lady in front of me had the same item in her order.
Its price was $5.00 more than what I paid the day before.

I provided a tire Lady who owned a couple shops a consultation that saved her lots of money.
I meant LOTS !
She knew I did them as a ministry on a donation basis. She also knew that I needed an alignment.
She was going to charge me fu)l rate $100+. She told me but if I drive to another town where she had another shop it would be $80.

I asked what was the difference?
She said it was the location of whatever people were willing to pay. That's what retail does.
They soak us with whatever "the going market rate is."

Some will change the price to higher if they know you are interested in buying the item or service, but there's no tag. A middle eastern grocery store owner tried to do that to me last week. I corrected the guy and told him it was such and such on other items with the same expiration date. While in line I took it back and grabbed another. That was a third less.
