History
Originally enacted in 1807 and signed into law by President Thomas Jefferson, the Act has roots in earlier statutes dating back to 1792 and was expanded during the Civil War era and Reconstruction (up to 1871) to address events like the Whiskey Rebellion, labor strikes, and efforts to combat the Ku Klux Klan. It was last significantly amended in 2007 (temporarily broadening its scope before reverting) and has been invoked about two dozen times in U.S. history, including by Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson to enforce school desegregation during the Civil Rights Movement, and by President George H.W. Bush in 1992 to quell the Los Angeles riots. No invocations have occurred since 1992, making it a rarely used power.
The Act does not define terms like "insurrection" or "domestic violence," leaving significant discretion to the President, who has sole authority to determine if conditions are met (as affirmed by the Supreme Court in Martin v. Mott, 1827). Courts can review deployments afterward for constitutionality but rarely intervene preemptively. Critics argue the law is overly vague and prone to abuse, prompting calls for congressional reforms to add clearer limits and oversight.

New York Times: “Trump Gets the Retribution He Sought …”
Associated Press: “Trump escalates retribution campaign …”
PBS: “… as he ramps up retribution campaign.”
Every news article and cable news segment on the topic is naturally accompanied by a Democrat who ominously declares Trump an “authoritarian” who has “weaponized the Justice Department.” As if the last 3 years have been scrubbed from history.
To the Way Back machine… Over the span of the last 10 years the President’s opponents have;
- spied on Trump,
- undermined his presidency,
- impeached him twice,
- tried to arrest him,
- charged him,
- indited him,
- gagged him,
- censored him,
- raided his private residence,
- jailed his supporters,
- attempted to strike him from state ballots,
- convicted him,
- tried to kill him. Twice.
Retribution? You’re damn right. But not FOR Trump, THROUGH Trump. To the extent that the president is guided by anything personal, whatever. No, this ultimately is justice for the 77+ million Americans who with their own eyes saw corruption at the highest levels of government, wanted accountability and justice for those responsible and a message sent to anyone else who might ever consider subverting our Democratic Republic.
