Jesus says, “If you look at a woman with lust in your heart you have commited adultery with her in your heart.” (Matthew 5:28).

This verse has become a bastion for teachers against pornography, soft porn, pin ups, and etc. But is it meant for that? The context of who and what Jesus is discussing is adulterey which cannot be committed unless you are married. Jesus was raising the stakes for married men whom he was talking to, but can this be used in broad way for singles too?

I lean towards using is broadly, because the message is adultery in the heart, but can you have adulterey in heart if the woman is an anime character, video game character, and etc?

What are your thoughts?

Do we use Jesus’ statement as catch all for every kind of thing even having a crush on celebrities or is it specifically for married people or in a very niche context of marriage and adultery that he was addressing then?

Well...

The first thing that needs to be understood is that the word 'woman' is usually used in scripture to refer to a married woman whereas the word 'virgin' is used in scripture to refer to a woman who has never been married. Thus, the idea of committing adultery in Matthew 5:28 is properly indicated in the context of the verse. However, this does not mean that the principle being discussed does not apply to other than a married woman. The "matching" of the word 'woman' with the word 'adultery' in the verse is proper usage according to the times - it is an "in the case of a [married] woman" explanation; however, it does not necessarily nullify a different case/context where the woman is not married. In other words, adultery requires a married person while 'lust' does not necessarily require it.

Second, we need to recognize that 'lust' is referring to a "desire of the heart" and not merely looking at a pretty woman, enjoying our food, or similar thing related to whatever context that lust is being considered. (Because, it applies to more than just a sexual sense.)

Matthew 5:

28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

If you "look upon a woman" in a way that simply "appreciates her beauty", it is not lust; however, if you develop/have a desire to have sex with her, then it is lust. This is the basic difference - indicated in this verse by/with the words 'to lust after her' - which involves more than merely 'looking'. It is a 'heart'/'desire' motive. And, in this verse, the 'lust' takes place 'in his heart'.

Third, we must consider the meaning of 'lust of the eyes' in this verse:

1 John 2:

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

And, in the context of this verse, the 'lust of the eyes' does not necessarily explicitly refer to a sexual context; albeit, that would no-doubt be the usual case.

I suggest that having a 'crush' is not necessarily always of an explicit sexual nature. In other words, an "innocent crush" is possible and reasonable.

I can agree with you that people often broaden the scope of scripture beyond its actual meaning - "technically" - the context is in/with regard to a married woman. However, in all of this, there is a principle here to consider also - having to do with how you "order your thoughts" as an everyday practice.

I should probably correct you on your "adulterey which cannot be committed" [sic] statement. In the context of Matthew 5:28, adultery is committed 'in his heart' if she is married.

Use Matthew 5:28 as a broad catch-all? No. We should apply verses of scripture according to what they are actually saying. However, there is more scripture to consider...

Be careful not to confuse or conflate 'lust' and 'adultery' - lust is what is in the heart and adultery is the sin committed.

One does not have "adultery in the heart"; rather:

James 1:

15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

In the context of this current discussion, adultery is the result of lust.

Aye but the lust Jesus mentions is of the adultery variant. You can lust after things: “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.” (1 John 2:16)

You can only commit adultery if you are married.

Finding a woman or man very attractive isn't a Sin.
God made them beautiful.

If we are against appreciation of that we could always wear full Burkas. Just as long as finely handsome men doo too so to keep it fair.

Oh I agree, when God made Eve Adam saw her and said “Zazazoot! That’s it!”

I admire the beauty of Woman, God truly saved the best for last.

What I am seeking answers on is how to straddle the line of admiring beauty and then when its lust.. and how to know the difference.

If you're not married, I'd advise not to worry yourself.
If you are married, thought is one thing and subjective at that.

Looking at a beautiful woman and thinking she is so,appreciating that, isn't the same as thinking, boy I'd like to hit that!

If it is what a married guy is thinking,he might want to commit to introspection and ask himself the hard questions.

Why am I wanting to bed a woman not my wife? Am I sexually attracted to her still? Etc...

A part of me feels this way, like if your single you are seeking a mate and being sexually attracted is a factor. Like God made us to desire what we do.

What is hard is everyone who teaches on lust & sex in the Church is married with kids.. so when they tell you to just pray and feel nothing, I raise a brow and be like, “says the person who has a spouse to express their desires and passions with..”

My view is that there are no loopholes. We are supposed to treat others as mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters. I think admiring someone's beauty is okay, but if you are imagining having sex with someone that seems problematic.

You should raise a brow if they're talking to the singles in the congregation.

Feeling sensual attraction is part of choosing a spouse.

I think if any pastor tells the dingle in the church to feel nothing, they're likely giving insight into their own married lives.
Because feeling nothing when single isn't evidence of God given natural libidos.

I think the passage means what it says, no need to make it complicated.

Did you somehow overlook post #2?

Yes - this - absolutely. (y)

It is all-too-easy for married folks to try to placate singles concerning their desire to have a marriage relationship.

And, it is not just about sex (if it is, something is wrong somewhere) - it is about the whole relationship.

But, I digress - what you are saying is particularly focused on the sexual aspect of the issue.

What I am seeking answers on is how to straddle the line of admiring beauty and then when its lust.. and how to know the difference.
Think about this for a bit...

God had to have designed everything in such a way that a man could court a woman and eventually marry her without ever committing a sin.

If God had said "If you so much as look at a woman - it is lust - it is sin." then He would virtually force every man to sin before he could ever get married. But, God has not said that - and, would never cause a man to sin; instead, He has made it so that a man and woman can have a courtship and get married without sin.

What I am seeking answers on is how to straddle the line of admiring beauty and then when its lust.. and how to know the difference.
The difference - when you cross the line - is this - when you desire to have what is not yours to have (sexually speaking) - you have crossed the line.

I lean towards using is broadly, because the message is adultery in the heart, but can you have adulterey in heart if the woman is an anime character, video game character, and etc?
Is she married?

Since anime characters, video game characters, etc. are not real women - this may move the concern from "adulterous lust" to 'lust of the eyes' if anything.

What has not been said is that - if you become too preoccupied in/with looking at images/pictures/etc. of women as a source of satisfaction for what you need, it has the psychological propensity of keeping you from going out and finding a real woman.

You can only commit adultery if you are married.
A single person can still commit adultery by sleeping with someone who is married/betrothed; and plotting to steal some married guys wife is still adultery in the heart. "white knight" types do this all the time- find people in a troubled marriage, and instead of helping them reconcile; they encourage them to get divorced, so they can scoop them up.

Adultery only applies to the married cheater.

The single one in that consensual intercourse with the married person is not committing adultery.
They're a Skank, male or female, a THOT, or a Slut. However, by definition, they are not committing adultery
