Hey Everyone,

We had a series like this in the Singles Forum a long time ago that people seemed to like. I was inspired by @Ceph's awesome thread to resurrect this thread style to hopefully help Make Being a Christian Fun Again!

*Obligatory Disclaimer * (that always makes things more amusing.) Please not that I am certainly NOT trying to say that being a Christian is all rainbows, miracles, and sunshine. Jesus Himself told us that we will have much trouble in this life.

But I'm also someone who believes that God gives us some leeway to also be human and have fun once in a while, too. And I was hoping that there are a few people out there who might find a thread like this to be fun amidst the holiday stress.

So...

If the Family Forum was going to meetup to see a movie:

1. What genre of movie or specific movie would you like to see? I haven't watched a movie in years (the last one I saw was Top Gun: Maverick, because it actually treated a familiar character with respect and personal growth, rather than just killing him off for a younger replacement.) I feel like there are hardly any movies these days worth watching, but I would watch most anything with friends!

However, if I were choosing, I would probably gravitate towards my "classics" like Terminator 2 -- which still makes me cry at the end. Thank goodness there were never any sequels to ruin such a beautiful story!

What about you? What movie genre or specific film would you pick, and why?




2. What place are we going to take over, I mean, gather at, to watch our movie of interest? In a theater, at someone's house, at a church, etc.? If you go to a theater, is there a certain kind you prefer? IMAX, theaters that also serve full meals like a restaurant, etc.?

3. And now for THE most important question of all: what kinds of snacks will we be buying/bringing to enjoy while watching our movie?







Which snacks are your favorite, which ones are a definite NO, and why? (Why do you prefer M&M's over Swedish Fish, etc.?)

If you love popcorn, do you have to have it a special way? (Extra, EXTRA butter?) Chili dogs over hot dogs? And is there One Flavor of Slushies to Rule Them All??

I'm looking forward to hearing about people's different preferences -- and the reasons behind them -- as The Family Forum Goes to the Movies!

How do you choose which one, or twenty of your 340 coffee makers shall be summoned for such a special occasion?

Can we expect a coffee sample flight (this gets my vote!)??

I'm no coffee connoisseur, but I know we have a few members here who are, and I'm sure a coffee tasting event would be a big hit!

I'll have to get a picture of them all together. There's a couple I actually haven't used yet.

First, thank you for including ^this! As a Christian who watches a lot of secular movies and listens to secular music I sometimes get grief for this.

1) I'll take action. My favorite movie is They Live (1988). It'd be great to see it on the big screen.
The genres that I almost always avoid are comedy, animation, romance/romcom, and musicals. There's some rare exceptions, but mostly those genres aren't my thing. The first time I went on a date to the movies (I was 17 and he was 16). He asked me what movie I'd like to see. I chose an action movie. To this day, I fondly remember him letting me choose instead of just assuming because I'm a female that I'd want a romance (or some other genre that's typically considered to be what women prefer). He didn't just assume, he let me decide. It's great when you both like what you are watching. It's no fun when you are in agony

2) I think it's great to get out to the theater. Also, going for a nice stroll afterwards and talking about the movie is nice too. I also really like going to the movies by myself. I've been to tons of movies alone. I greatly enjoy it. I use to go to matinees by myself often and several times I've been the only one watching the movie.

3) Bottlecaps!! The root beer is my favorite bottlecap. I'll enjoy those and then use the others to play with lol...

It's nice to meet another gal who doesn't like musicals or rom-coms!!

I mean... The Hallmark Channel... ARGH!!! A whole channel dedicated to contrived meet cutes and plots so boring they feel like a double dose of Unisom (sleeping meds) rather than anything engaging (pun intended.) Bleh.

(Now, kudos to anyone who DOES like romances but I myself just don't find the way modern culture portrays romance to be very romantic -- but that's just me.)

My idea of a good date movie would be any of these classics!

2. Gonna chill at home cause my coffee and fridge are there!

3. Coffee of course. Pizza and/or popcorn will do. Those bottle cap candies are hard to find here. I used to get those every time I saw them at a store. I don't eat candy much now.

Let's see on my list to watch in the near future are hogfather (which I would try to talk everyone into watching to introduce them to discworld and because it's equal parts zany, thought provoking, and satirical about Christmas), the last starfighter, joyeux noel, and probably some of my other christmas faves. Other than that I'm usually up for a good fantasy or historical epic. Or a good space movie. Doesn't have to be a comedy but there should be some good laugh lines in there.

Pizza and ice cream with movies at my house (just bring a bribe for the resident canine defender so you get on her good side)

Diet Pepsi, soft salty pretzels with mustard would make a good snack, and maybe some pepperoni pizza. I'd love some milk duds but have learned the hard way the my crowns and bridges can't survive them, which makes them the most expensive snack in this solar system.

It's been a long time since I've seen a decent movie, but;
1. Dr. Strangelove. For me, it's a nice unhinged parody of the world. Plus Ripper was right about the flouridation.

2. I would like to build a new movie theatre for us to watch in, since the theatres I've been to haven't been a 100% perfect experience.
IMAX, 3D... there needs to be a new kind of theatre, Projecto-max. The whole scenes of the film will be projected holographically in the environment around you, and you can feel the cold, heat, wind, dampness, and dryness of every scene.

3. It's been so, so, sooo long since I've had dibs ice cream. I would have to get a large bucket of them and eat it throughout the entire film.

Hmm...It's a good thing you specified the Family Forum. But just for kicks I'm going to break it down by different kinds of forums anyway.

Family Forum: Up. Gotta watch Up. That's the most recent movie that is actually worth watching.
BDF: Three Blind Mice. Not for the plot, just for the title.
Conspiracy/News forums. Anything from Oliver Stone.

Family Forum: At our church, on the wall projectors, through the sound system. Is there any other way to watch a movie?
BDF: In a wrestling arena.
Conspiracy/News: In a bunker. Not saying where. If you try to show ID they'll call you a sellout to the system.

Family Forum: Snack cakes are always popular. Buy one box of everything Little Debbie that the store has, and you'll be sure to have something for everyone. Even me, if you happened to get devil dogs.
BDF: Pretzels and mustard. Salty and sour.
Conspiracy/News: Anything from the local farmer's market, because that's the only source we can trust.
