I see a lot of opinions in this thread, and ample expressions of foolishness such as “no creed but the Bible”, but there are an important two verses that are glaringly absent.

if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth. (1Tim 3:15, NRSV)

Beloved, while eagerly preparing to write to you about the salvation we share, I find it necessary to write and appeal to you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. (Jude 1:3, NRSV)

It is no wonder there are so much heresy in our day, people ignore the witness of the church, the body of Christ, the household of God.

So, we are to kick aside the Ecumenical Creeds of the church, from the body of Christ as unnecessary? Ignoring the great Confessions of Faith that came out of the Protestant Reformation has given us what we have today, 1000s of groups who claim the name of Christ. Are they all teaching the truth? Every one of them claim to be based on the Bible. Even the Jehovah’s Witnesses make that claim, “no creed but the Bible”.

When someone says he teaches solely what the Bible says while ignoring the creeds and confessions, he means he teaches what he thinks it says, in opposition to the witness of the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth.

So, there can only be one whole true doctrine of the Gospel. If we all don’t agree on the same doctrine then some of us are wrong.
I personally believe that the Pauline doctrine of Justification Solely by faith is the original and true doctrine of the New Testament.
So there……..lol

I understand the distress, but see The Way being seeking and guarding accurate theology (keeping God's commandments - love for God) together with love for one another as Jesus commanded. Both are marks of true discipleship and the latter is from the former.

What do you include as God's commandments that must be kept?

What do you include as God's commandments that must be kept?

Essentially summed up in 1John3:23 and including the full scope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ = the Law of Christ = the Faith of Jesus Christ = Perfect/Completed Law that provides Freedom = the Word of Truth that birthed us = the Word we become doers of (all from James1-2) - basically learning and being raised and trained by a perfect Father in Christ in Spirit to be conformed to the likeness of His first-born Son / our first-born brother and Lord according to the entire NC Writings with its nearly 600 commands in just the Epistles - approximately 1,000 commands in the NC Writings - and all instruction therein while drawing from the Tanakh for learning and instruction.

There are about 4,000 types of competing Christian Churches each with a unique understanding of the "truth." How does one know which one(s) are guided by the Holy Spirit?
This reminds me of a question I heard a while back from a person who was skeptical of hearing and following instructions from God directly. His question was something like, "If someone tells you what to do and claims he got those instructions from God, then are you obligated to do what he says?" The answer to your question and His question is the same. Each of us is accountable to God alone.

Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. (Ro 14:4)

That question is sometimes employed by people who don't believe God speaks today. The simple answer to it is that the prophet is responsible to deliver the message, not for the response to it. This is shown in Ezekiel 33:7-9.

The recipient is responsible to test the message... and the messenger. This is shown in 1 John 4:1-3.

The following in Context, is written to and about disciples in general, not just the 11 Apostles alone who spread the gospel.

Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. (John 15:16, KJV)

If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. (John 15:19, KJV)

Christ’s prayer to God the Father

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word… I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. (John 17:6, 9, KJV)

The closing book of the Bible

And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; (Rev 5:9, KJV)

According to the above, Christ prayed ONLY for the elect, those believing, not the world; and it was those believers he prayed for, and them alone that he shed his blood to redeem out the world.

So, do we agree, we both love God, because,God loved us first through Son?

How do we know when to label someone a false teacher or a belief as false?

Even if you did know when to do that how would you know your labeling false is accurate. We're obliged to know our faith and then follow our conscience but the conscience must be properly formed.

John 7
14Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught. 15And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned? 16Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. 17If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. 18He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

Mark 3
33And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? 34And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 35For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

Matthew 22
37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

The one person I know personally, who showed the "fruit of the Spirit" better than any Christian I've known, happened to come from a Buddhist family, with the value-system of his family. He had experienced being "born from above", but had no Christian teaching other than the simple, plain gospel.

Buddhism believes nirvana is attained via right belief, but karma lacks sufficient evidence to be believable.
It is indeed possible for atheists to imitate moral behavior without glorifying the One who determines what is moral.
Not sure what Christian gospel you refer to when you indicated he was not a Christian.

Matthew 10:16-20, Luke 21:14-15

I have come believe that the essential false doctrine of 21st century Protestant and non-denominational Christianity is any "doctrine" that does not descend below your vocal cords.

How do we know when to label someone a false teacher or a belief as false?
There has been many things said so far and many good things stated also. However, "Doctrine " is teaching from the word of God.
The essentials of all scripture are and must be built on the person of Christ. The foundational truths of scripture means if anything of those teaching are not true the Christian faith is over.

  • IF Christ is not Divine
  • Did not die and raise again
  • The virgin birth
  • without sin
Those are just a some of the teachings from the Bible of the person of Christ that are foundational Truths from the word of God.

The idea for many today is you are false if you do not agree with my understanding of the text with in the word of God.
One labels you a false teacher. Yet there is a level of this context.

1. Error

Error, can be done and said in relationship to ones understanding of the word of God that is not deliberate. Therefore one can be corrected. The intent was not for deception it was an error.

2. False Teaching

Is also error however one has built the teaching into a foundational truth that is not established in the word of God as a normative but more descriptive. And have made the teaching elite. Like having to be baptized in Jesus name only to be saved or having to speak in tongues. They have made this teaching essential for salvation therefore it is false with in the context of the word of God.
One can be teaching this out of upbringing or tradition which they were not deceptive but ignorant to the truth of Gods word. Like the teaching of the RCC. They can still be corrected.

3. False Teacher/ Occult
This is where a figure head is in place and will not be corrected and teaches others that what is known as false teaching are true. They many even at one time professed to be Christians or still do. Or elite the teaching that makes them sole holders of the "truth" as it has been given to them by God.

False Teacher and occults:
JW's
Mormons
Scientology
Oness
Hebrew Israelites
Islam
LGBTQ Christianity

Finally truth:

We, men and women of God must be in a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit will lead us and guide us into all truth John 14:26 16:13. AS Ministers we must study , prayer and ensure as much as possible everything we say at the pulpit is truth from the word of GOD.
Not what the culture of the day says or " that was what they believed then we have progressed from that. AS if God changed his mind and abandon His Holiness at the expense of his love for all. Not an opinion. Not what we feel is right. it must be what God says on the topic. And it must be supreme and foundational within the context as the author intended it to be.

Jesus said to the devil man shall not live by bread alone but by EVERY WORD that proceedeth from the mouth of God . That was also a quote from the OT .
How do we know when to label someone a false teacher or a belief as false?
Jesus knew the scriptures Deuteronomy 8.3 and practiced all the word of God , they didn’t call him master for nothing, Jesus barely knew letters or language the Pharisees claimed so was he uneducated? What bible school did he attend ? And what books about the Bible did he read ? What search engines did he use ? And AI ?
What church denomination did he belong too ?
Yet he was the Master of scriptures, remember when he as a child he was asking questions to the elders , and they marveled at his questions. So Jesus did learn . So when Jesus said “man shall live by every word of God “ don’t reduce it , that’s the religion of Pharisees , that’s why Jesus was correcting them so often , they had religion suit them . That’s what Jesus called doctrines of men . So beware we don’t reduce the word of God . Apostle Paul claimed he taught the whole counsel of God , not just essentials. Who s essentials? If you stick with the whole word of God it’s all covered and obeyed. The devil knew scripture and used it against Jesus , but Jesus knew all of it in truth . The devil twists it to suit his purposes and reduces it . That would give him greater opportunity. Just look at churches today , I’d say he has been successful. I remember a lady that was considered illiterate, she went to church and doubted what the pastor was saying , so she asked the Lord to understand the Bible reading it herself . She claims he answered her prayer and was able to read it herself. She was an Irish immigrant in Toronto Canada in the 19th century, so I figured she learned the KJV and many today say they find it hard to understand the old English . I was encouraged by her testimony and read the KJV and would not part with it for another Bible . My English was bad when I first started reading the Bible over 50 yrs ago . So be encouraged to read for yourself the Bible . That way you will know if it is so what they say ! Amen .
