We have to make our own entertainment some times.
The only time I'm a cheetah is when reading mystery..I skip to the end and find out whodunnit.

I do remember Christians would often tell someone, especially a new Christian how to read the Bible. Read Revelation first! Read John first!
But who reads the Bible by skipping to the end?! Start with Genesis, like from the beginning, a very good place to start. But no. lol.

So to bring this thread back on topic, do you ever cheat... Colloquially, if you insist... With books, movies or other media?

Isn't that cheating in itself? We aren't meant to discuss books, movies or other media.....except the Bible.
Otherwise, we are just not gonna be taken seriously. Cos it's fiction....

Well this is what I heard. It may or may not be true...

The mountain that was made over a molehill, is kind suicidal, because suicide ideation is essentially skipping toward the end. I don't want the pain and suffering, so I'll just end it myself. Then I'll get to heaven. That's what a lot of people think, and it's a reasonalbe human response to the dilemma. If it looks like you're not winning, what are you going to do?

Fake it till you make it?
A lot of people are desperate to win. Cheetahs run fast, but that's all they are designed to do, pretty much. They don't actually cheat. Cheating would be like the tortoise and the hare..the tortoise keeps on going, slow and steady and wins the race. Doesn't the hare skip to the end, because he thinks he's already won anyway, so he just takes a shortcut?

Count to a hundred. Ok one, two, miss a few, 99..one hundred! I remember kids doing that and thinking they were smart lol

I think I just read fast, but then...thats what librarians do. We read. A lot. I don't think it necessarily makes us librarians any smarter, because we might miss something, but it does make us see the forest, where some people see only trees.

A lot of people give up, they don't make the time to read an actual book. With pages. So they read online or get the Cliff Notes. Or watch the movie, in 2 hours. They get the Reader's Digest version. Instead of spending time to read the whole thing.

In our fast paced world, it's often what you have to do. Who reads ALL the terms and conditions when clicking on website? Or signing a contract which you are under pressure to sign. Many don't and they find they get caught out over a clause they missed cos they were too much in a hurry to read the whole thing.

They want the destination, and don't think about the journey to get there. Instant gratification...takes too long!

Anyhow, maybe I just wrote too much....again. But it's a deep topic. I like to dig deep. Get to the bottom of things. If you don't, you'll likely not find the treasure...

I'd been thinking about this topic for a while, but Lynx solidified it by greeting our keep-in-touch group with a morning greeting that said, "Hooray For Cheating!" and, "Cheetahs Never Win" -- so I have to give him full credit for this title!

How about you? Are YOU a Cheetah?!

In other words... When you read a book, hear about a movie, play a game, work on a crossword puzzle, play trivia, hear a joke, etc. -- do you always play "fair and square", watching or working out the ending without a single spoiler or cheat code, or do you go fishing for answers from everyone's favorite digital family member, Brother Google?!

I have to admit that I have learned a very uncomfortable truth about myself -- when it comes to entertainment, I am definitely a cheetah.

I just recently got back into reading novels (I'm always reading something, but it's usually short things like articles I can digest quickly in between other tasks,) but I've just recently gotten back into reading entire stories.

And as with most entertainment... I find myself cheating. I don't really watch movies or TV, but in order to be able to talk to people, I do read or listen to summaries of things I hear people talking about. I don't watch horror movies but many seem to have interesting plot points that I promptly look up on Wikipedia. I don't play video games, but if enjoying watching someone utilize a good cheat code for a game in a YouTube video is a crime, then I deserve to be locked up!

And for some reason, I can find plenty of spoilers to pretty much any other form of entertainment, but unfortunately, haven't had much luck finding "cheat codes" to plot points in the books I've been reading! (I'm not subscribed to Reddit or any of the social forums I'm sure are brimming with spoilers -- so all I seem to find are review sites with copies of everything already printed on the jacket of the book.)

I know such actions might upset any purists, but I like being able to take in a vast amount of what's going on in pop culture in very little time and without things like gratuitous nudes scenes and whatever else.

In my own Christian walk, I've found that knowing a plot point here and there opens doors for me to form interactions with people that can lead to talking about matters of faith.

For example, I've been seeing videos of the latest Mortal Kombat guest character, Conan the Barbarian (via the 1980's Arnold Schwarzeneggar version) asks other players, "What god do you pray to?" It's an interesting bit of trivia I've tucked away because I could see using this as an opening line for an opportunity to ask someone what god THEY believe in, and go from there.

I'm pretty awful at games (no coordination!) and couldn't own them due to my own personal convictions anyway, so I'm glad there are little "cheat codes" like this that allow me to start talking to people on their own level. I've found that knowing just enough to be able to engage in what people are talking about, but without having to watch these things myself, has been a useful bridge that can lead to more meaningful conversations.

Do u want me to b totally honest ? Please don't b offended ! I think it's a really bad idea . If u start to talk to someone about anything , a book , a game , a film etc and , u haven't read , played or watched it all properly and they have . If u do that and try to present that u have , they will b able to tell and , u will totally ruin your credibility with that person . They may not challenge u about it but they will know that u r bluffing and this cones across as disingenuous . I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings truly I am but , I have to say how I truly feel . For many people , books , games , films etc , r meaningful experiences , pretending that u have shared that meaningful experience and talking about it as if u have , when they catch u out , that will really turn them off u . Please forgive me for being so blunt . I hope u take this message in the way that I intended it , with love and honesty .

I'm playing Stardew Valley and one of the ways to make good money in early game to develop your farm and town is to fish. Stardew Valley fishing is notorious for being difficult but I managed it. But fishing to me is kind of boring no matter what game, and thats what happened here as well.

So yeah, I installed a fishing mod because it's so boring. At least with the mod I can fish faster and get that over with to play the rest of the game. My goal is not to make as much money as possible, but develope the farm and town in the prettiest way.

I haven't used mods in other video games of this genre. I'm really loving this genre with the rural life and improving your home and town. So much fun!

I used a few cheat codes in Subnautica. I hate when the hostile sea creatures chase me and attack so I used two cheat codes that would make them leave me and my home or underwater craft alone. I can still die if I run out of oxygen or dont eat food though.

I don't cheat in shooter looter video games though (Borderlands, Generation Zero). I've never really had to.

We all have different perspectives and experiences. I think you may have misunderstood.

I don't watch TV or movies anymore but I do listen to reviewers on YouTube, which give me just enough information so that I can sort of know what's going on if something popular comes up in conversation with a co-worker, someone at church, etc.

I DON'T ever try to present myself as having completely seen, read, or played whatever is being talked about. I'm always honest about these subjects. I just tell them straight up, "I've NEVER watched X, Y, Z except for clips on YouTube, but I've heard reviewers say..." and then I'll ask them what they thought about a certain scene or plot line I picked up from the videos.

For example, when Game of Thrones was popular, EVERYONE was talking about it -- including some Christians I knew. I had SEVERAL Christian friends who were into it and trying to get me to watch it -- but I knew from the YouTube reviews it just wasn't something I would like. Even without all the adult material, I knew I couldn't get into it.

But everywhere I went, people were bringing up that show, so, I would just say, "I don't watch it, but I heard such and such about it on YouTube," and then I would ask about a certain character, etc.

Every time, people would be excited to explain things to me -- I never once had anyone criticize me for trying to talk about it without actually watching the show. I found this to be true about every other pop culture thing I've talked to people about as well. For me at least, people just jumped at the chance to talk about what they were passionate about. I didn't do much talking, except for asking questions. And this can lead into other conversations about other things in life, including faith.

This was particularly handy when I used to work with younger people (high school, etc.) Talking to them about their favorite games, anime, or pop culture (and I ALWAYS told them I hadn't seen or played the show or game, but that I had heard this or that about it,) and it really got them opening up about other aspects of their lives, including spiritual beliefs.

I'm a terrible liar (I'd get all tongue-tied and backtrack everything,) so I couldn't get away with "fooling people" into thinking I'd seen, read, or played everything we talked about even if I tried.

Besides, aside from just being the right thing to do, it's a whole lot easier just telling the truth.

I used to go to Quiz nites with the school teachers at the local watering hole. I don't think you can call it a 'pub' or a ' bar' cos in NZ we don't really have those but it's similar.
Anyway we are in teams, and none of us use google on our smartphones while doing the quiz. So it gets our brains/memory banks working.
I think it would ruin it if we just looked up the answers on our phones (Or had the fastest look ups) and it would definitely be cheating, so we would get zero points and be disqualified!

I was mostly good on the literature, pop culture, and random questions but a bit useless in the sports category. But that's why you need a bunch of different people to round out the team.

mm Game of Throne. Never watched it, or read it. What's it about?

Doesn't it have Emilia Clarke in it?
She was in Last Christmas. Now that was a good movie.

I saw the books in the bookshop, but they looked so thick, I knew I'd never get through it, and fantasy is not a genre that interest me, though some people are REALLY into it. Like sci-fi fans would read Dune, and wax lyrical about the movie.

I have read LOTR though (Lord of the Rings) and seen the movie, of course! And been to Hobbiton. Actually I was more of a Hobbit fan than LOTR. I could never cheat by reading the end of LOTR because it just wouldn't make sense if you didn't read the whole thing. Though you can skip the appendices. They are optional extra.

It had a map of Middle Earth, I loved the hardback version because the map folded out. I could go on about LOTR but its not necessary here. If you know, you know.

Remember the Christian furor over Harry Potter?
I read the whole series but by book 7 I was kinda over it. Also I wasn't the right age to start with, it was for younger generation, I'd just missed it because I was in uni by the time it became popular.
I thought it was brilliant that it got kids into reading entire books with no pictures. I do understand the concern about actual witchcraft though. By that time I was already over the wiccan craze that a lot of young girls get into, you don't really want to dabble in that.

Basically it's a revenge tale, like Hamlet, but with magic and ghosts. Oh wait a minute. No it's more like Macbeth. Oh but Shakespeare is not Christian right? I haven't read all of Shakespeare but Ive seen plenty of movie adaptations and a couple of plays. I think most people kinda know what happens in Romeo and Juliet for example.

Did you notice that apart from Fratricide, Shakespeare had a sort of obsession with doubles and twins? Makes for great comedy.

Did you know that back Shakespeare's day, the players/actors all had to be men. The men played women, cos women were not doing theatre. They were too busy cooking mens dinners and cleaning the house and having their babies.

Cheating?

Cheating would be breaking rules in order to gain an unfair advantage over others.
That being the case, we may be using the word cheating to describe some things to which it does not apply.

And I don't think it's possible to cheat at entertainment unless the entertainment is a game.
(I don't cheat at games. Not ever. Seems to me that just circumvents the whole point of playing the game in the first place. I play a game to see if I CAN win. So cheating would never allow me a good measurement of my ability. And losing really isn't a big deal.)

Anyway, if we first think about what cheating means, then we're going to have a lot of categories that we can't really apply it to.
We might need a different word to describe our moral failures in other areas... if they're actually moral failures at all.
Taking shortcuts, in many areas of life, is just smart, and good time management.

Seoul probably means taking shortcuts here regarding entertainment. To say you've read when you haven't. To get ahead in a game and not play by the rules. To look up the answers on google rather than rely on your own memory/knowledge.

People cheat at cards (there's actually a card game called cheat) where people lie and call each other bluff. I think that's generally Poker.

Oh yes I know that feeling I hate housework , it's so mind numbingly boring but , I also don't enjoy a dirty house so what can u do play some loud energetic music while u work the house ! That's what gets me through it

My worst chore is cleaning the shower. I have to find a way to make that enjoyable.
