Hey Everyone,

Quick thread credit to @cinder and @Lynx, who helped me piece together some ideas for this thread in an early-morning chat.

The other day I was visiting my parents. As with many older people, my Dad is on a restrictive diet for his health. My Mom was in the other room, and my Dad was talking bout sneaking off and eating something he knows he shouldn't have -- and in mass quantities. He had that little twinkle in his eyes which meant he was just trying to get me to holler, and sure enough, I called out to my Mom, saying, "MOM!! DAD'S BEING BAD AGAIN!! We need to put him in the timeout corner!"

My Mom came running, my Dad was laughing, I was laughing, and I gave them both big hugs. I was chuckling to myself, thinking of all the times growing up when my siblings and I would shout, "Mom! Dad!! So-and-so is doing THAT again!!!" (Funny thing, my Mom would come running to check on my siblings, but always check to see if THEY were ok and didn't really bother checking on me!)

I realized that now I am finally old enough to tattle on my parents!! And it was a kick!

How about all of you?

* When you were a kid, did you and your siblings/cousins/family members tattle on each other?

* What happened when you tattled on others?

* What happened when they tattled on you?

* Did your parents tend to listen to the testimony of one particular kid over the other?

* How did you handle it when you became an adult and your own kids/students/those you babysat started tattling on each other?

I know I'm writing in the context of family but of course this could apply to any other setting -- work, school, church, etc.

My particular example is light-hearted but I also know that tattling can be a very serious matter.

Feel free to share what you're comfortable with -- I would love to hear your stories. :)

I know of one time the guy in the pew behind us tattled on my brother. Bro kept poking me, and I'd get in trouble when I retaliated. The guy sitting behind us told mom my brother was instigating it.

I just loooooooove tattling! :love::love::love:

If the shoe fits..wear it.

Seriously though, when I was bad, I was locked up.
When my parents were bad, was when I would think about calling the police or the ambulance.
I'd never get in trouble in church. Because we never went as a family.

My grandparents had limited power over my parents so it would have been useless to call them.

At school when children were acting up, we could do one or two things with tattlers. If they made it up, the got in trouble for lying. If it was true, and was serious enough, the parents would be informed. If the feud involved relatives, like sisters or brothers against each other, would try to get them to forgive and reconcile with each other. Usually it would be the older bullying the younger. We had a red card system.
If the parents abdicated their responsiblity, then it would be up to the social worker to report it to the police. Because we take child abuse seriously.

My big sister naturally bullied me when I was younger and still does it to a certain extent, verbally and physically. But she does realise if it hurts me and it's not funny. And she would apologise if she lost her temper.
If I cried, I could only do it with my mum, my dad would not tolerate me crying.

I thought red card was a soccer thing...

Well it probably is too, but schools use it for discipline if the kid has been naughty.
I don't remember my primary school using it when I was young, but then I was never the naughty kid (I think) at school.

One of my brothers would goad me into hitting him and then he would run to mom and tell her I hit him. I don't think he ever thought to run to mom and lie when I didn't hit him. Interestingly, as an adult that same brother will goad someone on when he gets in that kind of mood, not necessarily to hit him but to aggravate the person. It doesn't work on me anymore. I'm one of the few siblings that can visit him and enjoy the visit.

Aside from that rascal, I don't recall much tattle telling in our family. We were all pretty well behaved so there wasn't much dirt to expose in the first place.

My sister would have solved that problem real fast. She would have made it a strong enough hit that we would stop wanting to do things that made her want to hit us. POW!

Only child here so no one to tattle on . I never have and never would tattle on anyone unless it was for something serious such as violence etc . I've seen people shoplifting and I've never tattled . I'm good at keeping secrets so........I know a lot of secrets about people , for some reason people tell me things about themselves , some of it I don't really want to hear but 🤷 what can I do ? I know things about people that they don't even know I know and they will never know that I know because.....I don't tattle ! One of my alcoholic aunties stole a load of booze from her dad ( my grandad ) I saw the whole thing and never said a word until , I was asked directly by my other auntie , I don't tattle but I don't lie either , it can b hard to balance those two things let me tell ya ! I can't even plead the fifth cos I'm in the U.K. 😆😆😆 .

My siblings and I never tattled on each other. We always worked things out among each other - or not. None us felt our parents would do anything if we tattled anyway, or we were afraid the person who got tattled on would get the belt.

Thanks @seoulsearch for starting this thread. I didn't realize until now, that deep down, my siblings and I actually cared about each other when we were growing up. I mean, we WERE jerks to each other at times, but not JERKS, lol!

Thank you for this thoughtful post, @2ndTimeIsTheCharm!

You got me thinking about some things in my past...

To paraphrase what you said, I look back at some events in my life and think, "Well, that was bad... but it wasn't BAD."

I'm thankful that God has allowed me to be able to see that. :)

We didn't have to tattle. My mother knew what we had done before any of us got to her.

My siblings and I were latch-key kids. Both my parents worked so we had to take care of each other basically.

I loved it! We got away with so much that my parents never knew we did! 😁

We were locked out kids. When we were finished with our chores, we, along with our friends had the free roam of 2000 acres of fields, woods and swamp until the next meal or bedtime. Our free time was limited, so we took advantage of every second.
