Some seem to think a God of truth would never change any of His decrees. Jeremiah's
parabolic prophecy shows that God,
being a rational self-determining Being who is
motivated by love can indeed change what He has declared to be His will for a people. He never does so
arbitrarily. Rather, when he changes something, He does so for His own redemptive purposes.
One way God changes His plans is by instituting COVENANTS that
override and replace prior covenants which failed (either because of human frailty or disobedience. The marriage covenant was also meant to last a lifetime. However, the simple act of ADULTERY breaks in an instant the covenant which God meant to be permanent.
Paul said that, back when he was trying to keep the
whole law, he did so because he perceived that the Law
was "holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous, and good (
Romans 7: 12)
. Like Ezra, Paul admired and even loved the Law (
Psalm 119:97). However, his admiration did not change his desire to hunt and murder Christians. I think this is the "mystery of iniquity" - how those who love and immerse themselves in the truth can end up serving Satan. This not only happened to the Pharisees but also to Reformers like Luther, Calvin and Zwingli who sought to murder the Anabaptists.
There was a problem with the Mosaic Covenant and God Himself pointed it out:
7 For if that
first covenant had been
without fault, no place would have been sought for a
second (Romans 7:7). However, God DID find FAULT in that covenant and it was NOT due to any defect in the law. It was due to a defect within mankind's nature which resides not so much in the MIND as in our
desires (
Romans 7:8)
This is why the Covenant of the Law had to be done away with - because, though the principles of the Law were true, we have to be TRANSFORMED from within in order to keep them. Such a change has to come from outside ourselves, from the
Holy Spirit. We must be born again by the Spirit. Anyone who thinks that with enough dedication they can can flawlessly obey the Law has not yet learned the main point of the Law - which is to show us our sin.
