Yes, the book The Desire of Ages by Ellen G. White contains material that was heavily borrowed or adapted from other authors of her time without formal citation or quotation marks. Whether this technically constitutes "plagiarism" is a subject of debate between critics and supporters, largely depending on whether the standards of the 19th or 21st century are applied.

Ministry Magazine

Here is a breakdown of the evidence and perspectives:
  • Documentation of Borrowing: Investigations, most notably by Adventist minister Walter Rea in the early 1980s (detailed in his book The White Lie), found that Ellen White used the writings of others across many of her works, including Desire of Ages, Steps to Christ, and Prophets & Kings.
  • Study Findings: A study commissioned by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and conducted by Dr. Fred Veltman to analyze The Desire of Ages found that while she did not copy wholesale, she did borrow ideas, phrasing, and structure from previous authors, including William Hanna, Alfred Edersheim, and Frederic W. Farrar. Veltman’s study suggested that in the sampled chapters, there was a significant degree of literary dependence on other sources.
  • The Argument for "Fair Use": The Ellen G. White Estate and other supporters argue that her writing style fell within the accepted, looser literary practices of the 19th century. They argue her borrowing does not meet the legal or ethical definition of plagiarism because she did not intend to deceive and she transformed the borrowed material to create a unique, coherent work.
  • Legal Perspective: Attorney Vincent L. Ramik, a specialist in patent, trademark, and copyright cases, was hired by the Adventist church to analyze the accusations and concluded in a 27-page opinion that "Ellen White was not a plagiarist, and her works did not constitute copyright infringement/piracy".
  • Context: Supporters note that she often encouraged readers to consult the books she used, suggesting no intent to hide her sources, and that much of the source material was already in the public domain.
Conclusion: The Desire of Ages does contain uncredited literary borrowing. Critics argue this proves she did not receive the work solely through divine vision, while supporters view it as "literary borrowing" allowed by 19th-century standards.

After the last messenger is shot and the closing events of this great controversy complete the Sabbath will still come around every seven days as a memorial of the creative power of God. That is really what all of these discussions are about.
[Isa 58:13 KJV] 13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, [from] doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking [thine own] words:
[Isa 58:14 KJV] 14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken [it].
[Isa 66:23 KJV] 23 And it shall come to pass, [that] from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

Sun worship is a powerful delusion:
[Exo 20:3 KJV] 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
[1Jo 5:21 KJV] 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

I’m not a SDA by any stretch of the imagination! But I do keep the Sabbath and have had my best spiritual blessings ever, alone . But not always to be honest , but they are a blessing as I give testimony . One Sabbath day I felt so “refreshed “ was the best way I could describe it . And one day I read the same thing , sorry I can’t remember the text , but refreshed was the word used to express the Sabbath in the OT ! So there you have it ! We will be keeping the Sabbath in the new world and that rejoices my heart thinking about it ! Last chapter of Isaiah. God Bless you as you seek the truth !

I have been trying to get a reply from sabbatarians.

According to traditional Jewish theology, particularly as outlined in the Talmud and by scholars like Maimonides, the Seven Laws of Noah (Noahide Laws) are considered universal moral laws intended for all humanity, whereas the Ten Commandments are specifically part of the Torah covenant given only to the Jewish people. Do you agree?

If not why not?

Trot out the same old, tired arguments. The New Covenant is for those who are new creations in Christ Jesus. My advice is to quit your dead religion and come into the new life. Lord Jesus died and rose again to grant us liberty, not to put us back into bondage.

Sun worship? So you advocate worshiping Saturn instead? Not much of an improvement.

That’s a good question ! The answer is does God desire to save the whole world or just the Jews ? John 3.16 answered that . The Jews were supposed to be a light unto the world , and failed that as we know . It’s clear to me the scriptures invite the world to obey God in the old and New Testament. But they can not bring their sins with them . Isaiah 56 is excellent read and verse 3 and 7 highlights that God is for all Nations .

Amen! And the LORD brings this sign starting right from Creation- this spiritual rest God gives has been available since the very beginning Heb4:3-4 when the Sabbath rest started Exo20:11 made for mankind. Mark2:27-28 Once you have experienced a taste of this, there is nothing like it. God is right its delight in the LORD Isa58:13 invited to everyone to join themselves to the LORD Isa56:6. Sadly sin separated man from God Isa59:2 so we can only worship Him in truth and spirit, but can you imagine when every Sabbath His saints come before the Lord to worship Him in His presence Isa66:22-23.

These are just a few examples of Jews , But as a nation they failed often according to the scriptures. But individuals remained faithful always to God , regardless.

Not true. I'm sure you and a few others would like to make it seem that way, but that is not even close to being true. I would say I understand the obsessive distractions you and a few others are presenting, but actually I do not unless we factor in delusion along with the false teaching. Since we do not find anything about the Sabbath being the only acceptable day to worship God in the actual Bible, the entire false rhetoric regarding Saturday is non-biblical.

We are therefore left with actual SDA or Saturday worship people attempting to take over another thread and doing the usual bullying and sounding like the authority on all things worship. Yes, the Old Testament is where you gain inspiration using
twisted and taken out of context scripture. Par for the way you folk act. But it is more than a little difficult to forget that you super duper religious champions of self congratulatory Ellen White followers tell the rest of us that we are sporting the mark of the beast or at least will be, when Sunday is made obligatory because you say so because White said so. Jesus had something to say about that, and I would be generous to say only that. It's a reference to crossing the sea to try and turn out people as enamored of themselves as you are, with no bonus points from God

Sun worship is a powerful delusion

How low can you cultists go? Obviously no one is worshipping a certain day of the week although you Sabbath keepers come close. I worship God and Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit and I don't have to wait until a certain day of the week to do so either. Following the delusional and cognitively impaired Ellen White is the travesty, but you are certainly free to follow her to the underworld if you so desire. I do not see worshipping on Saturday or Sunday as a problem and since scripture tells us that it is not, I see and understand the problem as you and your friends. You are false teachers because you ignore large portions of the New Testament.

Such as this:

16Therefore let no one judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a feast, a New Moon, or a Sabbath. 17These are a shadow of the things to come, but the body that casts it belongs to Christ.c 18Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you with speculation about what he has seen. Such a person is puffed up without basis by his unspiritual mind. 19He has lost connection to the head, from whom the whole body, supported and knit together by its joints and ligaments, grows as God causes it to grow.

20If you have died with Christ to the spiritual forces of the world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its regulations: 21“Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!”? 22These will all perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings. 23Such restrictions indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-prescribed worship, their false humility, and their harsh treatment of the body; but they are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. Co. 2

Actually the entire chapter of Colossians 2 addresses your fascination with Saturday but since Paul wrote this letter, you do not acknowledge what it actually says apart from totally twisting it and adding OT scripture that has less than nothing to do with the New Covenant which is actually the gospel. The actual real gospel and not the mashup you and other like minded people play with.

Adventists, Ellen G. White, failed prophecies and scripture ...is the actual op

The record of false 'prophecies' from EG White is both extensive and alarming, considering the adherents who still follow her, while ignoring the record of error and insisting that she was both accurate and a true 'prophet'.

Adventists, having experienced the false prophecy of William Miller who stated Jesus would return Oct. 22, 1844, (aka The Great Disappointment) retroactively corrected the error of Miller by stating that Miller was over eager in his words and what actually took
place 10/22/1844, was the 'start' of Jesus final 'work', meaning the cleansing in the heavenly sanctuary which would actually lead up to
the 2nd coming.

The backlash after the failed expectations of so many, resulted in angry critcism and even, in some cases, violence from the public. It seems
that many followers had given up their possessions in consideration of the prophecied date of Jesus return and now they were left empty handed both spiritually and physically.

The Millerites had to deal with their own shattered expectations, as well as considerable criticism and even violence from the public. Many followers had given up their possessions in expectation of Christ's return. A Millerite church was burned in NY and 2 others were vandalized
while a mob in Illinois attacked the Millerite congregation with clubs and knive while yet another group, in Toronto, Canada, was tarred and feathered. In some other cases in Canada, Millerites were shot at.

Many Milleries gave up their beliefs but, during this time, as stated above, excues were made, corrections given and several new sects sprang up, apparently unwilling to admit error or the possibility they had been falling both a false teacher and a false prophet in the person of William Miller.

Due to the active and insistent amount of posts made in another thread here regarding the ongoing claims of White's adherents or SDA participants, along with the denials of scripture that indicate error or the skipping over of questions and so on by the same adherents, it seems it would be more helpful to discuss the problems of White's teachings in a different atmosphere where proof of the false prophecies and what scripture actually states, could be discussed. No prejudice intended, but open discussion is needed which cannot be had if certain people take scripture out of context to change the meaning or, just ignore scripture altogether.

Here is one false prophecy of White:

White contends the Sabbath is still in effect and Sunday is not honored by God as day to honor Him

What scripture actually says:

The New Testament clearly shows Christians worshiping together on Sunday, not Saturday and Romans 14 teaches that the individual must be convinced in their own mind of the day they choose to observe.

I am a Seventh-Day Adventist. If you are interested in a discussion without SDAs I will move on but if you are open to a conversation rather than a debate I would be glad to attempt to address your concerns.

Here is the reply to my op almost right after it showed up. So, rrcn has not kept his word and and let this thread be; he has done the usual and could not resist posting an inflamatory post filled with the usual blah blah blah that the SDA take delight in.

It should be noted that the thread's intent was never about a general discussion on the SDA, but specifically on White and her teaching. If that developed into the SDA (as we know it did) then maybe they should pay more attention to White and stop protecting the delusional messages she came up. Every post concerning White is sourced. Denial is not much of a defense.

So, so much for moving on. :sneaky:

Tomorrow is what we call 'Good Friday' And then of course the entire week-end concerns Jesus crucifixion and resurrection. We remember that Jesus gave up His life and said 'It is finished'. And indeed, it is finished.

What each person here does with that is between them and God. I don't care about date presentations or more of the Sunday insults. Each person is responsible before God no matter what you actually believe.

At any rate, I'm done until possibly next week.

After the last messenger is shot and the closing events of this great controversy complete the Sabbath will still come around every seven days as a memorial of the creative power of God. That is really what all of these discussions are about.

You are prioritizing the "Great Controversy" narrative of a 19th-century writer over the plain words of the Apostles, who explicitly excluded the Sabbath from Gentile requirements in Acts 15:28. The New Covenant has a different memorial. Jesus never said "keep the Sabbath in remembrance of me," but said of the bread and cup, "this do in remembrance of me" (Luke 22:19).

This promise was specifically made to those who inherit the "heritage of Jacob," yet the New Covenant is "not according to" the one made with the fathers at Sinai (Jeremiah 31:32)

[Isa 66:23 KJV] 23 And it shall come to pass, [that] from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

If you use this verse to mandate the Sabbath today, you must also explain why you aren't keeping the "New Moon" festivals mandated in that same sentence.

Sun worship is a powerful delusion:
[Exo 20:3 KJV] 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
[1Jo 5:21 KJV] 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Calling Sunday worship "idolatry" directly contradicts Colossians 2:16, where Paul commands us to let no man judge us in respect of a Sabbath day.

I find taking a sabbath on mondays refreshing. As far as the new world, how bout them new moon festivals?

I’m hearing a lot of “Let mo man therefore judge you in meat , or drink , or in respect of a holy day , or of the new moon or of the sabbath days : which are a shadow of things to come ; but the body is of Christ . Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshiping of angels , intruding into those things which he hath not seen , vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind … so all the verses apply to them .

Calling Sunday worship "idolatry" directly contradicts Colossians 2:16, where Paul commands us to let no man judge us in respect of a Sabbath day.
The Catholic church blended pagan and Christian doctrines together to switch the day of worship to the day of the Sun.

Here are some facts about the Sabbath:

Why keep the Sabbath day? What is the object of the Sabbath? Who made it? When was it made, and for whom? Which day is the true Sabbath? Many keep the first day of the week, or Sunday. What Bible authority have they for this? Some keep the seventh day, or Saturday. What Scripture have they for that? Here are the facts about both days, as plainly stated in the Word of God:
  • After working the first six days of the week in creating this earth, the great God rested on the seventh day. (Genesis 2:1.3.)
  • This stamped that day as God’s rest day, or Sabbath day, as Sabbath day means rest day. To illustrate: When a person is born on a certain day, that day thus becomes his birthday. So when God rested upon the seventh day, that day became His rest, or Sabbath, day.
  • Therefore the seventh day must always be God’s Sabbath day. Can you change your birthday from the day on which you were born to one on which you were not born? No. Neither can you change God’s rest day to a day on which He did not rest. Hence the seventh day is still God’s Sabbath day.
  • The Creator blessed the seventh day. (Genesis 2:3.)
  • He sanctified the seventh day. (Exodus 20:11.)
  • He made it the Sabbath day in the Garden of Eden. (Genesis 2:1-3.)
  • It was made before the fall; hence it is not a type; for types were not introduced till after the fall.
  • Jesus says it was made for man (Mark 2:27), that is, for the race, as the word man is here unlimited; hence, for the Gentile as well as for the Jew.
  • It is a memorial of creation. (Exodus 20:11; 31:17.) Every time we rest upon the seventh day, as God did at creation, we commemorate that grand event.
  • It was given to Adam, the head of the human race. (Mark 2:27; Genesis 2:1-3.)
  • Hence through him, as our representative, to all nations. (Acts 17:26.)
  • It is’ not a Jewish institution, for it was made 2,300 years before ever there was a Jew.
  • The Bible never calls it the Jewish Sabbath, but always “the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.” Men should be cautious how they stigmatize God’s holy rest day.
  • Evident reference is made to the Sabbath and the seven-day week all, through the patriarchal age. (Genesis 2:l-3; 8:10,12; 29:27,28.etc.)
  • It was a part of God’s law before Sinai. (Exodus 16:4, 27-29.)
  • Then God placed it in the heart of His moral law. (Exodus 20:1-17.) Why did He place it there if it was not like the other nine precepts, which all admit to be immutable?
  • The seventh-day Sabbath was commanded by the voice of the living God. (Deuteronomy 4:12,13.)
  • Then He wrote the commandment with His own finger. (Exodus 31:18.)
  • He engraved it in the enduring stone, indicating its imperishable nature. (Deuteronomy 5:22.)
  • It was sacredly preserved in the ark in the holy of holies. (Deuteronomy 10:1-5.)
  • God forbade work upon the Sabbath, even in the most hurrying times. (Exodus 34:21.)
  • God destroyed the Israelites in the wilderness because they profaned the Sabbath. (Ezekiel 20:12, 13.)
  • It is the sign of the true God, by which we are to know Him from false gods. (Ezekiel 20:20.)
  • God promised that Jerusalem should stand forever if the Jews would keep the Sabbath (Jeremiah 17:24, 25.)
  • He sent them into the Babylonian captivity for breaking it. (Nehemiah 13:18.)
  • He destroyed Jerusalem for its violation. (Jeremiah 17:27.)
  • God has pronounced a special blessing on all the Gentiles who will keep it. (Isaiah 56:6, 7.)
  • This is in the prophecy, which refers wholly to the Christian dispensation. (See Isaiah 56.)
  • God has promised to bless all who keep the Sabbath. (Isaiah 56:2.)
  • The Lord requires us to call it “honorable”. (Isaiah 58:13.) Beware, ye who take delight in calling it the. “old Jewish Sabbath,” “a yoke of bondage,” etc.

The Catholic church blended pagan and Christian doctrines together to switch the day of worship to the day of the Sun.

Here are some facts about the Sabbath:
continued:
  • After the holy Sabbath has been trodden down “many generations,” it is to be restored in the last days. (Isaiah 58:12,13.)
  • All the holy prophets kept the seventh day.
  • When the Son of God came, He kept the seventh day all His life. (Luke 4:16; John 15:10.) Thus He followed His Father’s example at creation. Shall we not be safe in following the example of both the Father and the Son?
  • The seventh day is the Lord’s Day. (See Revelation 1:10; Mark 2:28; Isaiah 58:13; Exodus 20:10.)
  • Jesus was Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:28), that is, to love and protect it, as the husband is the lord of the wife, to love and cherish her (1 Peter 3:6.)
  • He vindicated the Sabbath as a merciful institution designed for man’s good. (Mark 2:23-28.)
  • Instead of abolishing the Sabbath, He carefully taught how it should be observed. (Matthew 12:1-13.)
  • He taught His disciples that they should do nothing upon the Sabbath day but what was “lawful” (Matthew 12:12.)
  • He instructed His apostles that the Sabbath should be prayerfully regarded forty years after His resurrection. (Matthew 24:20.)
  • The pious women who had been with Jesus carefully kept the seventh day after His death. (Luke 23:56.)
  • Thirty years after Christ’s resurrection, the Holy Spirit’ expressly calls it “the Sabbath day,”(Acts 13:14.)
  • Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, called it the “Sabbath day” in A.D. 45. (Acts 13:27.) Did not Paul know? Or shall we believe modern teachers, who affirm that it ceased to be the Sabbath at the resurrection of Christ?
  • Luke, the inspired Christian historian, writing as late as A.D. 62, calls it the “Sabbath day.” (Acts 13:44.)
  • The Gentile converts called it the Sabbath. (Acts 13:42.)
  • In the great Christian council, A.D. 49, in the presence of the apostles and thousands of disciples, James calls it the “sabbath day.” (Acts 15:21)
  • It was customary to hold prayer meetings upon that day. (Acts 16:13.)
  • Paul read the Scriptures in public meetings on that day. (Acts 17:2, 3.)
  • It was his custom to preach upon that day. (Acts 17:2,3.)
  • The Book of Acts alone gives a record of his holding eighty-four meetings upon that day. (See Acts 13:14, 44; 16:13; 17:2; 18:4. 11.)
  • There was never any dispute between the Christians and the Jews about the Sabbath day. This is proof that the Christians still observed the same day that the Jews did.
  • In all their accusations against Paul, they never charged him with disregarding the Sabbath day. Why did they not, if he did not keep it?
  • But Paul himself expressly declared that he had kept the law. “Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.” Acts 25:8. How could this be true if he had not kept the Sabbath?
  • The Sabbath is mentioned in the New Testament fifty-nine times, and always with respect, bearing the same title it had in the Old Testament, “the Sabbath day.”
  • Not a word is said anywhere in the New Testament about the Sabbath’s being abolished, done away, changed, or anything of the kind.
  • God has never given permission to any man to work upon it. Reader, by what authority do you use – the seventh day for common labor?
  • No Christian of the New Testament, either before or after the resurrection, ever did ordinary work upon the seventh day. Find one case of that kind, and we will yield the question. Why should modem Christians do differently from Bible Christians?
  • There is no record that God has ever removed His blessing or sanctification from the seventh day.
  • As the Sabbath was kept in Eden before the fall, so it will be observed eternally in the new earth after the restitution. (Isaiah 66:22, 23.)
  • The seventh-day Sabbath was an important part of the law of God, as it came from His own mouth, and was written by His own finger upon stone at Sinai. (See Exodus 20.) When Jesus began His work, He expressly declared that He had not come to destroy the law. “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets.” Matthew 5:17
  • Jesus severely condemned the Pharisees as hypocrites for pretending to love God, while at the same tune they made void one of the Ten Commandments by their tradition. The keeping of Sunday is only a tradition of men.
