Whatever you do, work at it with your whole being, as for the Lord and not for men...... Colossians 3:23
Work for most of us is a drudge. We work to live, not live to work. Sometimes we have bosses who are hard to work for. I did not respond well to bosses with unrealistic demands. I was inclined to complain and that was not a good witness.
If you are inherently negative, as I am, it's easy to find fault. However, there is an antidote. It is to have a change of attitude. I began to tell myself that I was working for Lord Jesus and that He was my boss. That makes all the difference.
Complaining is the language of doubt and unbelief. Thanks and appreciation is the language of praise. We can always find something to thank Lord Jesus for. It's not always the best and brightest who get rewarded. Often it is the worker who gets on with others and gets the job done without a lot of fuss.
At the same time, we need to be sure that we are in God's will even in our work. We will know by the peace that we have in our hearts. If we have a good attitude yet lose peace when we are at work, the Lord may be telling us it's time to move.
"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, for to this you were called as members of one body. And be thankful." Colossians 3:15
The Amplified puts it this way:
"Let the peace of Christ [the inner calm of one who walks daily with Him] be the controlling factor in your hearts [deciding and settling questions that arise]. To this peace indeed you were called as members in one body [of believers]. And be thankful [to God always]."
While this is in the context of the life of the Church, it also applies to us as individuals.
So let's ask God to change our attitude to work, if our job is a burden. Ask Him to bless us and grant us grace to be His witnesses even in the worldly environment of the workplace. Work will become less of a chore and more of a blessing.
