One of my garden club ladies members turned 93, and she had cake.
I also recall in one of the rest homes where mum stayed, someone was having a 108th birthday, and pretty sure there was cake.

The other thing, some restaurants have 'dine free on your birthday' ...so make sure you do it! You'll have to bring at least 2 or 3 friends though. They may even give you special cake treat and a birthday card, and some servers WILL sing Happy Birthday to you, if the restaurant is a happy one!
At the end of the first game there really was a cake though. It looked like a very, incredibly store-bought, made in a factory kind of cake, but there was a cake.
I think birthday parties and cake in particular are not important for me for the same reason Halloween is so unimportant for kids these days.
Remember Halloween back in the day? Kids would strategize and plan over maps of the neighborhood for hours, trying to get the best yield per time unit. That was The Day, the time to harvest all the candy for the year. There were some streets that some kids would refuse to go down, because the house per minute ratio was too low. We have to take these streets instead, because we have a time limit and we have candy to gather.
These days kids have candy all the time. It's not special anymore. So they are not really as enthusiastic about halloween.
Last Saturday I picked up a blueberry shortcake bigger than a standard pie at the auction house. Why would I care if I get a cake or a pie or anything on my birthday?
Kids don't have their own money. I do. I can go get a lemon icebox pie whenever I want. So a birthday party and cake and ice cream and all that means a lot more to them than it does to me.

My dad, a savant at cooking, made me a Strawberry Shortcake from scratch, every yr on my birthday so I was very blest
So last yr my sm group met up for lunch at The Cheesecake Factory on the 27th with my bday the 29th and 2 other ladies beginning of the next month. We decided to order our dessert to go bc we were all full. Everyone ordered the expected pie and I, in honor of my dad, ordered Strawberry Cheesecake. They all looked at me like 'are you serious' lol, but it turned out great. In the bag was three sm shortcakes, a tub of whipped cream and a tub of strawberries. So I had cake that day, the next and one the 29th my bday
It was perfect, and I can buy a piece of Cheesecake Factory pie at Von's any day, if I want. TY Lord for big and what seems small blessings

Most of the time I don't eat sweets. When I'm not following that common dietary restriction of mine, which is rare, and if my birthday happens to come up, I would have to bake an angel food cake and coat it with a thin layer of homemade sugar frosting. Both the cake and the frosting would have to be my own creation. I would probably declare vanilla bean ice cream as an accompaniment to the cake mandatory as well, and strawberries too, if they happen to be available at a reasonable price.
I don't celebrate my own birthday, haven't for ages, but the idea of adults not having cake on their birthday makes me think somebodies are a sourpuss and need to search for and find their inner child.

Burger Fuel - I can fill my car up with burger fuel and its cheaper than regular fuel.
Usually normal people go by their sense of smell, if something smells good, then they'll order that.
How do they know how it smells?

Cake baking in the oven gives of smells of butter...roasted coffee is what a coffee shop should smell like...KFC wafts into your nostrils and makes you salivate...Cinnamon...

A long-distance friend recently had a birthday. Though I couldn't make it there in person for a celebration, I texted him a greeting and joked that I was just looking forward to the cake!!
He answered matter-of-factly that he was an adult, and that the time for having a cake on his birthday had long past.
I was a aghast!!Do adults not have cakes on their birthdays anymore??
I was thinking about his answer in contrast to a flour company commercial that's been playing all over my YouTube feed. A woman (probably in her 60's) says in summary, "Any gathering without a cake -- is just a boring meeting."
My own family is very health-conscious and some members avoid sugar as much as possible. Me, on the other hand -- I always say that I don't have a sweet tooth, but rather, a whole set of sweet teeth. Alas, birthdays in my family are celebrated with some kind of dessert that includes fresh fruit, and IF a cake is bought (usually only on my birthday because no one else really splurges,) it will be one of those jumbo cupcakes -- cut up and split among at least 6 people.
I don't find it worth it to buy or make my own REAL-sized cake because I'll be stuck with the majority of it, and seeing as sugar is already the bane of my existence, I just don't need the temptation.
So...
I am very curious.
* Do you (and your adult-aged loved ones) have cake on their birthdays?
* If so, what kind? (And does it need to be themed, have sprinkles, the latest trend in baking, etc.?)
* If not cake, what other treat do you celebrate with? Does just a nice meal suffice?
