While exploring the basis of my faith, it did not take long to discover the Hebrew Roots movement. In truth; I hold much in common with their beliefs. Their rejection of church doctrine and insistence on using the entire Bible are especially aligned with my views. But I found a problem.

Many “Roots” believers have a blind focus on dietary restrictions. It almost feels like they use this issue to separate themselves from other believers. I have no problem if a believer follows the Mosaic Laws to please YHWH, I wear Tzitzits for the same reason. While no proponents hold these restrictions necessary for salvation, several publicly and very firmly avow it is a sin not to follow the Mosaic dietary restrictions.

I have respectfully asked “Roots” leadership if this is not selectively following the Mosaic Law. That same law allows or requires:

Killing false prophets
Refusing to live in Egypt
Not to drink wine of idolaters
To set apart a portion of the bread dough for the Priest
To offer up incense twice daily
To bind God's Word on the head and the arm
To read the Shema in the morning and at night
Permits taking a captive woman as a wife
Requires building a parapet on your roof
Allows a rapist to marry his victim
Requires killing those who support an abortion

I will stop there for brevity; It’s a very long list (613). If Hebrew Roots followers believe the dietary restrictions are valid today as written, then are not these also valid today as written?

No one has responded to my inquiries.

It is obvious to me we are required to keep all 613, not in flesh, but in the spirit! The spirit of dietary restrictions is refusing to eat anything that may be bad for you. I’m not afraid of a well cooked pork chop, but MSG and red-40 are deadly. Those I should not eat.

Why do we make this so difficult?

If the Word of God, before the world was made, was not a Hebrew, why then do you want to identify as a Hebrew?

The is the "call not man on earth your father" principle: do not say your nature arose from any natural man. If you are in Christ, your nature is as God's nature is: neither Greek or Jewish. Eber is not our father; only God Above.

I have too many flaws myself to get overly upset about another person's foibles. But it can be important to remember that many of the OT laws were written specifically for the Levites. Likely in the 1st half of the 3rd century BCE these rules came to be understood as applying to all Jews, followed by extra rules to ensure that one did not accidentally break one of the official rules, like a Sabbath Day's journey should be less than about 1.2 miles to protect the commandment to not work on the Sabbath. But I also tend to agree with Paul that if you are going to keep the Jewish laws, you really should keep them all.

Well it is obvious to Christians that GRFS is accepting Jesus as Messiah/Christ, the Lord incarnate,
and the OT laws that were given in order to separate the Jews so they would produce Messiah are now moot.

Jesus is a Hebrew. Those who identify with the Hebrew Roots movement are not trying to be Hebrew. They reject following Halakha (Man-made Jewish rules) and also reject following church doctrine (Man-made Christian rules). They believe that when one accepts Jesus as Lord and savior we become His brother and an equal heir to the blessings God gave to Abraham.

Jesus was a Hebrew.

“16Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer.”

How much of Jesus’s flesh inherited the Kingdom of God?

Some people are religious by nature. That baffled me as a new Christian. i could not imagine an unbeliever choosing to attend church, but I realised that a lot of church goers were there for comforting ritual and to appease their conscience. I have since discovered that only about 4% of churchgoers are in fact born again.

This is changing. Church attendance is falling, which I think is a good thing if it is the pretenders who are leaving. As for those who seek to follow the Levitical laws, I do not understand how they can claim to be Christian. True Hebrew Roots predate the Law. Abram was called the Hebrew. Abram had no relation to the Law.

Those who live by the law will be judged by it. And that is a terrifying prospect, or should be.

I do not understand how you can conclude that Jesus is a Hebrew. During His time on earth, yes. But His nature is God, the Creator of all. Galatians 3:28 states that in Christ there is neither Jew nor Greek. Was Adam a Hebrew? No, the first man to be called a Hebrew was Abram (later called Abraham).

God never said should you have the same diet as the ancient Hebrew peoples you go to Hell. God never said should you observe the 10 Commandments you go to Hell. God never said if you observe any of the ancient Hebrew peoples Celebrations and Holidays you go to Hell. So if you observe any of those things you aren't going to Hell as a Follower of Yeshua.

People make things difficult for the sake of Traditions. God speaks:

-""Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill."
Matthew 5:17 NKJV; Romans 10:4

-"Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.""
Luke 24:44 NKJV

-""However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says:"
Acts 7:48 NKJV

-"Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, "You must be circumcised and keep the law" —to whom we gave no such commandment— For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well. Farewell."
Acts 15:24, 28-29 NKJV

Paul's letter to the Colossians is his argument against the idea. The Hebrew Roots Movement didn't exist back then, but something similar did. Apparently, the Colossians, on their own initiative, decided to live Jewishly. Seeing this, Paul wrote to discourage them from the practices. Those who are free in Christ should remain free and avoid the mindset of those who find value in them.
