They are born of God's will. The belief and faith is for us. When we receive and believe God, we have a right to become children of God. God will have mercy on whomever he will have mercy and he decided to have mercy on those who believed and those who he believes will be made spiritually born.

It's to as many as who have received and believed, to them they'll be given the right to become children of God.

To whosoever believes
Who can receive? Not the natural man. This is explicitly articulated in Scripture.
He has zero comprehension and actually opposes the Spiritual things of God, being
a slave to sin, blinded by the god of this world, refusing to come into the light, and
moreover the gospel message is heard as foolishness to that person. When you came
to believe, was the gospel message still foolishness to you? Did you choose to believe
what you thought foolishness? Some repeatedly insist everyone hears, also, but this is
blatantly false as well. They will tell us God is not required in the process of coming to believe.

From 1 Peter 1 verses 3-5 ~ The elect are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood. By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

Actually, there's a verse.

Deuteronomy 16:10

Then you shall keep the Feast of Weeks to the Lord your God with the tribute of a freewill offering from your hand, which you shall give as the Lord your God blesses you.

Yeah that is not free will as discussed in context of the natural man and salvation here. Thanks for playing though.

PS I have seen this verse offered up before which is kind of funny given how much they scream about context.

Choice, choice, they pretend having choices means the will is free.

Freewill.png

"Free will" in the Bible? ~ Freedom is something believers are called to (Galatians 5 verse 13). We need Jesus to “set us free” (Galatians 5 verse 1). If Jesus has not freed us from the bondage of sin, then we are still slaves to sin (Romans 6 verses 6-7). Freedom is found in the presence of the Spirit (2 Corinthians 3 verse 17). Only Jesus can give us true freedom (John 8 verse 36). Only through His lovingkindness can we truly make choices unfettered by a nature that is inherently hostile toward God.

The answer is in what Scripture says of man, not what man says of himself or what philosophy teaches.

Here the discussion revolves around what Scripture says of the natural man being a slave to sin and lover of darkness refusing to come into the light as a God-hater taken captive to do the will of the devil, opposed to the spiritual things of God, which he can neither receive nor comprehend, but yet we have many here contradicting and denying what Scripture says of the natural man. They claim the man of flesh, flesh within which nothing good exists, which serves the law of sin and brings forth fruit unto death, will decide with his incurably wicked heart to believe what he hears as foolishness. They are not above rewriting verses to make them say what they want even if it is Jesus' words they are butchering. In short, they have put a philosophical construct before the Truth explicitly articulated in Scripture. They ascribe to the natural man qualities, characteristics, and abilities that are true only of the spiritual man, and then to prop up this error, pretend the natural man is a carnal Christian and not the man who is not indwelt with the Holy Spirit of God.

Part of the problem is that people think that making choices equates to the will being free. They say such things as, if the will is not free, then people are puppets. This is a logical fallacy. Making mundane choices does not in any way address what the Bible teaches about man's will being enslaved to sin, blinded to the truth, unable to hear, incapable of submitting to God, a lover of darkness, refusing to come into the light, hearing the gospel as foolishness, unable to receive or comprehend the spiritual things of God, to which he is opposed and to Whom he is hostile toward while under the power and influence of the devil, as is the whole world, out of which believers have been called. Thinking your will is free simply because you can choose what colour of socks to wear or what to have for lunch, or whether to do the right or wrong things, or what book to choose out of the mountains of them available, has no bearing on the eternal fate of your soul, and mixing those things in with what the Bible teaches about the estate of fallen man is a distraction from the real issue.

This is the crux of the conversation, such as it is, for it is out of man's nature that he makes choices, and it is with the heart that one believes... the free will proponents essentially assert that the incurably wicked heart of the natural/unregenerated man is free to choose to believe that which he is not only opposed to, but that which he can neither receive/accept nor comprehend while in the flesh as are all before becoming indwelt with the Holy Spirit of God. They have the man with zero wisdom acting wise to do God's will when Scripture says that man cannot, that flesh cannot please God, that flesh serves the law of sin and brings forth fruit unto death, not life, and is unable to submit to or obey God. And their idea of wisdom is that person choosing to believe what they hear as foolishness. They reject what Jesus said about it being impossible for a bad tree to bring forth good fruit... there are none good, no, not one! Even when asked who can be saved, Jesus said that with man it was impossible, and there are other places where we are explicitly told it is not by the will of the flesh or man but by God's will that any are saved. Some philosophers and philosophy books have said man has a will that is free and that is enough for many to parrot what they hear and throw over a slew of Scriptural truths. They ascribe to the natural man qualities, characteristics, and abilities possessed only by the spiritual man. It becomes obvious they make no distinction between the two and worse, some have no idea that there even is a distinction.

For many are called, but few chosen. (Matthew 22:14, ASV)

Being called and being chosen are not necessarily identical. Many receive God's invitation, but only some respond faithfully and remain to the end.

Being called and being chosen are not necessarily identical. Did somebody say they were? You seem to be confusing me with someone else. Hmmm and also, you say many receive God's invitation? So are you saying not all receive this invitation from God? And yet do you not say man's will is free to choose? So do you believe those who do not receive God's invitation are free to make that choice? And do you also believe man can lose salvation?

“Everyone should acknowledge and confess that since all men lost their innocence in the apostasy of Adam, so that . . . they are servants of sin, under the power of the devil and of death . . . nevertheless in them free will is by no means extinct although it is weakened as to its strength and biased” Council of Trent, Roman Catholic Church
This sounds like so much we read in this thread! Are they Roman Catholics or Arminians?

This quote is provided in chapter 19, Original Sin, in A. A. Hodge’s Outlines of Theology
Outlines of Theology

A. A. Hodge was Presbyterian, but this theology textbook the Baptist Spurgeon used with his ministerial students.

“It is the standard textbook of our college. We differ from its teachings upon baptism, but in almost everything else we endorse Hodge to the letter.”

This is an excellent textbook on theology and written in a basic question and answer style.

From Chapter 20 on Inability:
Augustinian.—Which was adopted by all the original Protestant Churches, Lutheran and Reformed.

“(a) Man is by nature so entirely depraved in his moral nature as to be totally unable to do anything spiritually good, or in any degree to begin or to dispose himself thereto. (b) That even under the exciting and suasory influences of divine grace the will of man is totally unable to act aright in cooperation with grace, until after the will itself is by the energy of grace radically and permanently renewed. (c) Even after the renewal of the will it ever continues dependent upon divine grace, to prompt, direct, and enable it in the performance of every good work.”

Later in the chapter he gives the scripture basis for the belief, so it is a well-rounded, and pleasant to use theology textbook.

the gospel are the actions and words of Jesus Christ as found in Mark, John, Luke and Matthew as is. no need to add anything else Because His words are eternal life. Just listen to Him!
Calvinism is the Gospel, but you not listening, except to reject it

can you explain?
Meanwhile perhaps you could answer some questions? Thanks. Many refuse.

whatsayyou.png

What Say You? ~ When Scripture says there are none good, does it mean some are good? When Scripture says we all fall short, does it mean there are some who meet God's standards? When Scripture says, "The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned..." Does it mean the natural man can understand the spiritual things of God? Does it mean he really can understand the gospel message even though it is heard as foolishness to him as Scriptures say? Is the natural man gifted with wisdom even though he has no fear of God, which is the beginning of wisdom? Will the lover of darkness come into the light even though Scripture says he will not, because he suppresses the truth of God in unrighteousness and is actually defined as darkness itself, hates the light, and is a slave to sin, blinded to the truth and captive to the will of the devil, which many define as being free? Is the heart of the natural man, the stony ground which needs to be replaced, fit for receiving and growing the Seed of God's Word into faith? Will that incurably wicked heart choose of its own accord to believe? Will that bad tree bring forth the good fruit of faith even though Jesus said it was not possible?

That refers to both Jews and Gentiles who are in the Church.
For in Christ, we have become the one new man!

For we are now a New Creation in Christ.
No longer Jew nor Gentile.
The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.
Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people,
but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ. Galatians 3:16
.
Which is what was said. Lol

We receive salvation as a free gift through faith.

Mercy is found at the cross for all humanity to receive, to say salvation is an individual mercy for salvation given to some on an individual basis is a lie from hell.

Grace is the work of Christ Jesus for all people who through faith receive the gift.
No where does scripture teach the fallen state prohibits man from receiving a gift.

Notice Paul does not state you could not receive the gift because of your sinfulness, so God regenerated you first....that is read into the passage like every other tenet of Calvinism.

And faith here is not a gift clearly documented by the gender of the noun.
Faith is entirely separate from grace ...He does not write by grace and faith..it is through faith!

Therefore we can conclude until the verse is accepted for what is correctly teaches by the Reformed crew they have no case at all, no matter how much jello they try to pin to the wall about this and that.

1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
2in which you used to walk when you conformed to the ways of this world and of the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit who is now at work in the sons of disobedience.
3All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.

4But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
5made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our trespasses. It is by grace you have been saved!
6And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
7in order that in the coming ages He might display the surpassing riches of His grace, demonstrated by His kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

8For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9not by works, so that no one can boast.
10For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.a

The gospel is the good news. It’s not good news if Jesus only died for some people. That would be the worse news ever.
Are you a universalist? Well, perhaps some clarification is in order?

For instance, yes, Jesus' death paid the sin debt, and is sufficient for all, but efficacious only unto those who believe.

And that is indeed bad news for those who do not believe.

For many are called, but few chosen. (Matthew 22:14, ASV)

Being called and being chosen are not necessarily identical. Many receive God's invitation, but only some respond faithfully and remain to the end.

We can also note this was stated to His followers at that time, the Reformed crew do not really like to put things in context.
