Hello Kitty was supposed to be Jello Kitty, the Kool-Aid man's pet cat. But it didn't screen well with test audiences. So they changed the j to an h and gave Hello Kitty her own merch line.

Apparently whangdoodles are hairy beasts but hairiness and beastliness are in the eyes of the beholder.
As I've never seen an actual whangdoodle, I have come to the conclusion they do not exist, or are really lovable chimps in disguise.
