Revelation 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.I am aware of that detail, yet still see that the local city is identified.
I also live out of town, yet my nearest town is named on my address.
Where was Jesus sentenced to death?
The reason I mentioned that Jesus suffered and died outside the city gates (Hebrews 13:12) is because Revelation is using a symbolic use of these terms.
Hebrews 12:22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
In Exodus 33, we see that a time came in the history of Israel, when the tabernacle was moved "without the camp" which had become polluted with the peoples idolatries concerning the worshiping of the golden calf.
It says that "every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp." Which is a type of what we are meant to do, mainly to come out of carnal worship of earthly things, such as our obsession with earthly Jerusalem, and come to worship Jesus Christ in spirit and in truth in the heavenly Jerusalem.
Exodus 33:7 And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
For here we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
Hebrews 13:14 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.
