As of August 2026, U.S. wildfires have burned roughly 7.3 to 7.5 million acres (about 11,400 to 11,700 square miles) nationwide. This total is running significantly higher than recent years—reaching roughly 128% to 169% of typical 10-year averages—and has already surpassed the ~5 million acres (~8,000 square miles) recorded for the entirety of 2025.

To put this into perspective, between 1983 and 1992 fires burned an average of 2.7 million acres per year.

That's funny. 25k college kids that have been taught fire is hot and you need them for a paycheck and well catered mess tents.

The loggers were the hands down best fire fighters we ever had.

The good news if you are in the fire zone is you can still buy flood insurance, but you can't get fire insurance. Likewise, if you are in the flood zone in the Midwest the good news is you can buy fire insurance, just can't get flood insurance.
