Fly with who? According to the New testament there are items of the faith listed in Ephesians 4, those are the things we fight for. Everything else we are general about. Head covering is an example of something we are general about, and Jesus Christ is the savior who redeemed us with His blood is something we fight for. If the pastor and church does not stand with the items of the faith then leave and find a church that does. You will not ever find a "perfect church". The church is supposed to be a hospital, it is supposed to be full of people who are sick. No one is required to first clean up their life before coming to the Lord. On the contrary the requirement is to confess your life is a mess and that by coming to the Lord you are repenting. He can then work in your life to clean it up.
Scripture consistently prohibits adopting pagan religious festivals, symbols, or worship practices. But it does not prohibit neutral cultural days unless they involve idolatry. I am firm in this as the Lord is.
Deut 12:30–31 — do not imitate pagan worship
1 Cor 10:14–22 — flee idolatry
Eph 5:11 — have no fellowship with works of darkness
Rom 14 — conscience governs neutral matters
If a practice is a form of evil—idolatry, occultism, immorality—abstain.
If a practice is merely culturally associated with something once pagan, but no longer carries that meaning, conscience governs.
That said, I don't go to church because there is a taint that grows and blinds the eyes and ears of those in the pulpit.

Yes, that is true. Starbucks is clearly involved in idolatry. Anyone who spends just a few minutes investigating the company will know this. Once you know the company is involved in idolatry do you still go there? Some people go to the company thinking they are simply selling coffee, nothing else, they have no knowledge of the idolatry, and so for them there is no idol worship. But if you know about the idol worship then it is a different matter.
Likewise with Christmas. There are wonderful hymns of praise and worship that we sing. It is a great opportunity to recall the Lord's incarnation. All that is fine. If the pastor and the sermon are focused on Jesus Christ and his incarnation and are not talking about Santa, flying reindeer and elves then it is simply an opportunity to focus on Jesus.
I never allowed any presents from "Santa" for my kids, I never allowed them to "put up stockings" or do anything that would support the lies and idolatry. However, I still gave them presents because I did not want them to think that I was simply using religion to justify being cheap.
To me giving a gift is not imitating pagan worship. Saying that the gift came from Santa is. Wrapping a gift in wrapping paper is not imitating pagan worship, putting it under a tree is.
The world is surrounded by pagan and idolatrous occult symbolism. Paul is very clear, you can go into a business that is involved in pagan worship, when I was in Taiwan it seemed every restaurant had an altar and incense burning to their god, and you can eat there (purchase the things you need) because you know that an idol is nothing. The restaurant burning incense to an idol does not mean I am just because I eat there. However, if a brother's conscience is bothered by that incense burning to an idol then you don't go there. But that should apply much more to corporate America.
I think 1 Corinthians is quite clear on this issue. We don't need to worry if the person we are doing business with (not as a business partner but as a customer purchasing something) is an unbeliever or idol worshipper. If we separate ourselves from everyone who is an unbeliever how are we to fulfill our mission of going out into all the world and preaching the gospel. However, we are not to participate in pagan worship in an idol temple. It is possible that there are church congregations that have become idol temples and do participate in idol worship at Christmas (prime example). I personally am not aware of any that are, I am simply saying it is possible that you are.
I was in a church that for twenty years would go all out for a Christmas play each year. They justified this as an opportunity for outreach to the community to invite people to church and preach the gospel. My question was "show me the fruit". I wanted them to ask "how many people here first came to the church because they were invited to a Christmas play? I did not know anyone who had that testimony and yet you could have as many as 100 people involved in putting on this play and it involved many, many hours of labor as well as money to put on. I think I can say with certainty, having had the experience of both preaching the gospel and seeing these plays that were supposed to be corporate gospel preaching that the play was by far the most expensive, time consuming and least profitable approach to evangelism I have ever seen.
Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians 8–10 gives me the framework I need to navigate a world saturated with idolatrous symbols, corporate branding, and cultural practices.
He makes a sharp distinction between participating in idolatry and living in a world where idolatry exists.
An idol is nothing, and buying food—or coffee—from a business that engages in idolatrous marketing or symbolism does not make me a participant in their worship; but if I knowingly engage in a practice that communicates allegiance to that idolatry, or if my actions wound the conscience of a weaker brother, then I must abstain.
That is why I treat Christmas the same way: singing hymns of Christ’s incarnation is not idolatry, but endorsing Santa‑mythology, occult symbolism, or paganized rituals is.
The issue is never the cultural shell; it is always the meaning of the act.
Giving gifts is morally neutral; attributing them to a mythical being is not.
Eating in a restaurant with an idol in the corner is morally neutral; participating in the ritual is not.
Paul’s ethic is simple, I avoid any act that embodies or signals idolatry, but I do not treat the entire world as off‑limits simply because idolatry exists within it.

I used to go to a church that would put on this big Christmas play each year. They would write their own plays so it wasn't the same script. You might have 100 people involved in this production when you include the band and the choir and the audio visual team, the actors, the people doing set design and costume design, etc. They would also have animals in the sanctuary for the scene with the manger. This was an expensive production, and it was also a labor that involved a lot of time for a lot of members. They had a pastor who was in charge of this production. They justified all this because "this was an outreach to the community". They viewed it as an opportunity to preach the gospel and invite the community to the church.
Now I have been involved in campus ministry, I have been involved in evangelism in Taiwan as a ministry, and I have been involved in the Gideon ministry. So I have seen evangelism from a variety of different angles. I saw what this church did and I was there for 20 years, so I got a very comprehensive view of this approach. I was also involved in a different church that was very clear, they did not celebrate Christmas because it had been corrupted by pagan practices. They celebrated the Lord's incarnation but they were clear that he was not born on Christmas day.
The church with the Christmas play had a congregation of 2,000 though you would only see them packed out on New Year's eve. The church that didn't celebrate Christmas had a congregation of 200, but they were regulars and so you would see them each week.
Over a 20 year period I was not aware of any fruit from the Christmas play or any growth in the congregation over the twenty year span. As for the church with 200 over a twenty year period they went from a small local church in a part of L.A. to over 200 churches nationwide with total membership in the US over 20,000. In my opinion from my observation that Christmas play was the most expensive waste of time as a tool for gospel outreach. However, it did allow for people who wanted to be involved in drama to have jobs.
I think a church is supposed to be a small herb, a congregation of 50 to begin with and grow to 200 at which point you should have fifty who can go and start a new congregation. I think the church with 2,000 "members" is the "great tree" that Jesus is referring to. Rather than being a mustard plant that repels the birds of the air, it is a tree that gives them a place to lodge.
20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God? 21 It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.
They did this with the prosperity gospel. They tried to hide the leaven in the word of God to justify these "tele Evangelists" with their mansions and private planes. Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons are more examples of leaven hid in the word of God. The sneakiest example is the "Once Saved Always Saved" doctrine. They use the word of God and sure enough there is justification to claim the assurance of salvation. But there is no justification for teaching that believers can partake in idolatry and fornication. Our assurance of salvation is our covenant with the Lord. It is a marriage covenant. If you break a marriage covenant by committing fornication you no longer have the assurance of that covenant. Your spouse can divorce you and with deadly diseases being transmitted by sexual contact it would be advisable to treat fornication by a spouse very seriously. The picture is not that they are giving you pure poison, or that there is no truth in what they say. The three measures of meal depict the word of God. For example, a counterfeit bill does not need to look like monopoly money to be counterfeit. It can look exactly like the real thing, feel like the real thing, etc. It just needs to be 1% wrong to be counterfeit. So even if a church is teaching 99% truth they can still be hiding 1% leaven in that truth.
So then, God is omniscient, He is omnipotent, why does He allow the kingdom of God, the church, to be like this? God searches the hearts of man. Think how easy it would be to simply go to church a few hours each week and think "that is my ticket to heaven". There are over 160 hours in a week, if you give the Lord 3 hours, that is like giving him 2% of your time. The Lord is not interested in a Bride who gives him 2% of her time.
But we have to realize that God is sovereign. We are called to be a light shining in a dark place. A church is where you can serve the Lord and be an example to others that are seeking the Lord. It is a hospital and so it will be filled with sick people who may be idolatrous or fornicators. That is why we are the salt of the earth. Will that cause sparks to fly? Sure, they killed Antipas because he was "against all" and they excommunicated people from Sardis, and by the time you get to Laodicea even Jesus is kicked out of the church. But despite all that Smyrna and Philadelphia also exist.
In Luke 13, the mustard seed and the leaven are not sentimental images; they are warnings.
The mustard seed is supposed to remain an herb—small, pungent, useful, protective.
But when it mutates into a “great tree,” it becomes something it was never meant to be, and the “birds of the air”—which Jesus consistently uses as symbols of the wicked one, find lodging in its branches.
I cannot ignore how closely that resembles the phenomenon of massive, production‑driven churches whose size becomes their identity and whose ministries become spectacles. I’ve watched churches pour thousands of dollars and thousands of hours into performances that produce no lasting fruit, while smaller congregations—lean, faithful, unadorned—quietly multiply disciples and plant churches.
When I compare that to the mustard seed, I see the difference between kingdom growth and institutional expansion.
And when I look at the leaven, I see how subtle corruption works: not by replacing truth with obvious lies, but by hiding a small percentage of error inside a large percentage of Scripture.
Prosperity theology, cultic distortions, and permissive doctrines like “Once Saved Always Saved” when used to justify sin—these are not blatant denials of the Bible; they are leaven hidden in the meal.
I have to admit that God allows this because He is searching hearts, not building empires. A church is a hospital, not a museum; it will contain sick people, compromised people, confused people, and even corrupt leaders. But it will also contain Smyrna and Philadelphia—faithful congregations shining in the dark. And when sparks fly, when truth confronts error, when Antipas is killed or Jesus is pushed outside Laodicea, I remember that the kingdom was never meant to be comfortable. It was meant to be pure, costly, and small but powerful—a light in a dark place, not a tree full of birds.
Fine, so look for small congregations that are not production driven churches. Find churches that hold to the word of God and have not denied His name.
The church is the worldwide body of people whom God has called, redeemed, and joined to Christ by the Spirit, living as His covenant assembly. I'm pretty sure I'm sitting in amongst you now. Not physically, but in spirit, the best way possible in my eyes, Just the text and Jesus.

To someone unfamiliar, it might sound “un‑humble,” but it’s not pride—it’s formation. Decades in the text change your vocabulary, your phrasing, your clarity, and give your tone the weight of what you’ve wrestled with. That’s not arrogance; it’s simply the voice of a life shaped by Scripture.
