A common Christian tradition is that God imputed our sins to His Son Jesus on the cross, so that He would pay the price of our sins instead of us.

First, No Scripture ever says that the righteous God imputes any evil to the righteous, especially not the sins of those doing unrighteousness. And by no means to His own Son Jesus Christ the righteous, who never sinned, nor knew any sin in His own soul and life.

What is the Scripture, that is abused by men to say. that God did impute sin, and esteem Jesus legally guilty, and smitten by law?

Isa 53:34:
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

Who is it, that Scriptures says will impute Jesus Christ with sin, and esteem Him smitten of God on the cross, as if by law of God? God Himself, or man? Only man, not God.

And so, we see the prophecy was not of God Himself esteeming Jesus guilty of sin unto death by law, but only of sinful men believing He was guilty of blasphemy and smitten by law:

Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

Only men imputed Jesus with sin of blasphemy, and esteemed Him guilty by law and smitten of God on the cross. Not God Himself at all...And only some men still believe by false tradition, the lie that God imputed His Son with sin, and made Him legally guilty of sin unto death.

Jesus Christ was the Christ and Son of God on earth, and not a blasphemer, even though all men believed otherwise at the cross, and in death. No one went to His tomb on the third day to watch Him rise again, as He said, but only to anoint His dead body...

Anyone today, who is still imputing Jesus with sin, and made guilty of sin on the cross as though smitten by God, is only believing in His death alone, and not believing His resurrection from the dead, and declared to be the Son of God as He said:

Hello @ATG, that's correct, the Lord Jesus died on the Cross in our stead to redeem and save us. That teaching may be a traditional teaching too, but first and foremost, it's a Biblical teaching.

The judgment of all at the cross, was that Jesus was consenting unto His death as a plea of guilty without defence. And so by will of the Father and perfected obedience of the Son, all were allowed to judge Jesus by appearance on the cross, as being guilty and worthy of death by law.

All men therefore are themselves judged of God as unbelievers, and guilty of His own Son's innocent shed blood.

The wicked men were able to lay sinful stripes on the back of the Son, because He willingly submitted to their hands by commandment of the Father.

The good soldier does not inflict himself with wounds of the enemy. Nor is he wounded by the good Commander, but only by the enemy sent obediently into battle.

However, both the Commander and the soldier are responsible for their commands and obedience, whereby the enemy can lay wounds upon the soldier.

Because the Father commanded His Son to submit into wicked hands, knowing the price to pay, then Scripture says that the sinful stripes laid upon His back by His enemies, were by the LORD's commandment. Which commandment was to the Son, not to the smiters.

The LORD did not command the wicked to lay sinful hands on the Son, but commanded the Son to obediently submit to the wicked without defense nor protest.

Isaiah 53:6...the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all...

By the LORD's commandment to the Son, the sinful stripes of the wicked were laid on His back.

And so, the price for sin that the Son paid in obedience to the Father, was sumbitting Himself willingly into sinful hands, as a sheep for slaughter.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

Did the Father slaughter His own Son? No. Did the Father command the wicked to slaughter His own Son? No. Did the Father command the Son to submit to the wicked hands that would slaughter Him? Yes.

Therefore, the Lamb of God was slaughtered by command and obedience of Father and Son.

The price Jesus paid for sin, was not for that of His own sin, but was for willingly submitting Himself into the hands of sinners, to do with Him whatsoever they will. Even as with John the Baptist:

But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

Because the son knew what sinful men could do, when His hour was come, He willingly paid the price of submitting into sinful hands, who would lay siful stripes on His back, and unlawfully impute Him with sin of blasphemy unto death.

God did not impute the Son with sin, nor esteem Him cursed by law. Therefore, the Son could not pay any price for sin He did not commit. However, the Son could pay a price for sin on earth, by submitting Himself into the hands of sinners, to be wickedly striped, afflicted, stricken, and smitten of men, not of God.

Isa 53:7
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

The Lamb of God paid the price for sinning among men, but coming in the flesh among sinful men, and dying by the iniquities and sins of men laid upon His body. Not His soul.

Even as the LORD did not impute Jesus with sin, nor curse Him on a cross, nor lay sinful stripes upon His back, so also Jesus did not pay for any sin, as though He had sinned.

He was not smitten of God for sin, but was unlawfully smitten by wicked men for sin of blasphemy.

The price Jesus paid for sin, was not for that of His own sin, but was for willingly submitting Himself into the hands of sinners, to do with Him whatsoever they will. Even as with John the Baptist:

But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

Because the son knew what sinful men could do, when His hour was come, He willingly paid the price of submitting into sinful hands, who would lay siful stripes on His back, and unlawfully impute Him with sin of blasphemy unto death.

Isa 53:34:
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

God did not impute the Son with sin, nor esteem Him cursed by law. Therefore, the Son could not pay any price for sin He did not commit. However, the Son could pay a price for sin on earth, by submitting Himself into the hands of sinners, to be wickedly striped, afflicted, stricken, and smitten of men, not of God.

Isa 53:7
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

The Lamb of God paid the price for sinning among men, but coming in the flesh among sinful men, and dying by the iniquities and sins of men laid upon His body. Not His soul.

And finally we see that the propechy again is for all men, not only those at the cross; That we all who have sinned, are likewise concluded as unbelievers falsely imputing the Son with sin:

Isa 53:34:

Because we all have sinned against God and Christ, Jesus had to come to die for our sins to be repented and forgiven; And being unlawfully crucified by sinners; We all by our own sins are likewise judged by law guilty of the blood of the Son of man shed on earth:

But the gospel of Jesus Christ is that He did come to die for sinners, and is now resurrected from the dead, and declared to be the Son of God by the Spirit; So that all who repent of sinning against Him, are forgiven, washed, and justified for His name's sake:

Once again, we see it is only men that forsook Jesus, and left Him to His accusers, not the Father who was with His Son unto death.

Hello again ATG, while it's made clear for us that all of the Lord's disciples scattered when He was arrested (Mark 15:50), why do you think that they did so (one, believed by most to be John Mark, at least tried to follow Jesus and His captors for a time, until he ended up being seized by them, escaping & then running away naked .. Mark 15:51, so again, why do you believe that he chose to do so ).

Some of the rulers of the Jews (the Scribes & Pharisees) certainly seemed like they did, but where does the Bible tell us that the Apostles/Disciples did too (we also know that the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, saw through the ruse of the Jewish leadership, as neither he nor his wife believed that Jesus was guilty of anything worthy of death .. see again the ending Scriptures in post #5 above).

Finally, there is this verse (and others like it), a question that the Lord Jesus asked His Father while He was on the Cross, that must, of course, be considered.

Matthew 27​

46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have ~You~ forsaken Me?”​

The Father could not esteem Jesus guilty of sin unto death by law, and yet also be with Him on the cross.

Of course He couldn't, because the Lord Jesus was never guilty of sinning (personally), but the people for whom He died certainly were/are. Jesus, the "spotless Lamb of God", died in our place/on our behalf, to do for us what we could never do for ourselves, atone for our sins and save us from them, and from His Father's wrath.

The Bible tells us that we are "justified by His blood" (e.g. Romans 5:8-10 cf Hebrews 9:22, 10:4), and traditionally then, covered by His blood, and that in many different ways. In a similar manner, the Lord Jesus chose to be covered by/condemned for our sins, and for a brief moment in time, He was made sin for us (not a sinner), and died because He was (however, as the Scriptures make clear for us, the grave could not hold Him, because He, Himself, was never guilty of sinning).

Acts 2​

22 Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— ​

23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. ​

24 But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power. ​

ATG said:
First, No Scripture ever says that the righteous God imputes any evil to the righteous, especially not the sins of those doing unrighteousness.
What other kind of sin is there other than "of those doing unrighteousness" that it should be marked out with "especially"?

It's not the sin especially marked out, but rather what manner of sin is unjustly imputed to the righteous, that they do not commit.

It's one thing to wrongfully impute guilt to the innocent, such as for theft of another person's goods. But a worse thing entirely is to sinfully beat a righteous man to death, and then inpute that sin of the murderers to that righteous man, as though it were lawful to beat him to death.

And so, To believe that God imputed sin to Jesus Christ, and was cursed and smitten of God for sin, is to believe the wicked sinners that struck and smote Him, were justified in crucifying Him for blasphemy:

Mar 14:64
Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

To impute Jesus Christ the righteous with sin, is bad enough; And to believe God imputed Him with the sin, is worse.

But to believe that our sinning against Him on the cross, is imputed to Him, as though He were guilty by law? That's truly devilish, especially if we then actually want to believe that by imupting our sin to Him, we are then justified by His wicked death?

1Ti 4:1
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

Rev 2:24
But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, that they speak;

Rather than any sinner being justified by unlawfully killing Jesus Christ on a cross, all we that have sinned against Him are made guilty of His innocent blood, the Jew first and also the Gentile.

But what we that have sinned meant for the evil, God meant for the good, that by His resurrection from the dead, we can repent of sinning against Him, and be forgiven by mercy for His former enemies at the cross:
