In a reversal that has Washington insiders buzzing, former President Barack Obama can now be summoned to appear before a grand jury investigating the origins of the campaign against General Michael Flynn. Because of the unique shield of presidential immunity he once enjoyed, Obama cannot simply plead the Fifth and refuse to answer. Prosecutors and legal observers say the former president must sit there and speak. The very protection that once kept him from criminal exposure now forces him into the witness chair.

Yes — CNN’s parent company is in the process of being acquired, and the deal is expected to close very soon (by early October 2026).

Here’s the current situation:

• Paramount Skydance (controlled by David Ellison, with major backing from his father Larry Ellison) is acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the owner of CNN, in a roughly $110–111 billion deal.
• The deal includes CNN along with other WBD assets (HBO, Warner Bros. studios, various cable networks, etc.).
• Regulatory hurdles, including an antitrust lawsuit from a group of states, were largely cleared by a settlement announced around September 21, 2026. That settlement includes requirements for an independent editorial oversight board for CNN and CBS News.
• Closing is expected no later than early October 2026. Once complete, CNN and CBS News will share the same corporate owner.

Background​

Earlier, there was a bidding war. Netflix had a deal for only the studios/streaming side of WBD (excluding CNN and other cable networks), but Paramount ultimately prevailed with an all-of-company bid. There was also past interest from others (e.g., Barry Diller expressed interest in buying CNN specifically), but those did not go forward.

CNN itself is not being sold as a standalone asset right now — it is transferring ownership as part of the larger WBD takeover. Staff and observers have noted uncertainty about editorial direction under the new ownership, given changes previously made at CBS News.

Yes — CNN’s parent company is in the process of being acquired, and the deal is expected to close very soon (by early October 2026).

Here’s the current situation:

• Paramount Skydance (controlled by David Ellison, with major backing from his father Larry Ellison) is acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), the owner of CNN, in a roughly $110–111 billion deal.
• The deal includes CNN along with other WBD assets (HBO, Warner Bros. studios, various cable networks, etc.).
• Regulatory hurdles, including an antitrust lawsuit from a group of states, were largely cleared by a settlement announced around September 21, 2026. That settlement includes requirements for an independent editorial oversight board for CNN and CBS News.
