Often, I'll be about to post a song in the 60s thread and then stop myself because I realize the song is from the 50s. Since I haven't seen a 50s music thread, here's one for us who also enjoy 50s music.

I am with you. If y'all can find a copy of the book "The Gold of Rock and Roll, 1955-1967" by H. Khande Rhode, I encourage you to buy it.
For each year the book has an interesting analysis of the music trend followed by a list of the top fifty songs and then a week-by-week listing of the top ten songs. For example, in 1955 the top ten songs for the year were:
1. Rock Around the Clock - which is an apt beginning to the R&R era
2. Pledging My Love - which was number one for ten weeks by someone named J. Ace, whoever that was
3. Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White - which illustrates how "top forty" radio included slow pop
4. Only You - which is a doo wop song by The Platters
5. Maybelline - which is a more up-beat song by a founder of R&R, Chuck Berry
6. Yellow Rose of Texas - which is a pop song with a country flavor
7. Ain't That a Shame - which is a R&B song by Fats Domino, who also had "All By Myself" in the top 50 list
8. Earth Angel - another doo wop song, this a one-hit by The Penguins
9. Ballad of Davy Crockett - a personal favorite of mine at the age of six
10. I've Got a Woman - I could not relate to this song at the age of six
Other notable songs that year included "Bo Diddley" and "Sixteen Tons", which I remember seeing T.E. Ford perform on his TV show
Several songs from this year were part of "Flying Saucer" next year, including "I Hear You Knocking" and "Don't Be Angry".

Thanks! That kicked off the R&R era with a mix of acoustic and electric instruments.
The astute among us may have noted that Elvis Presley was not in the 1955 list,
but in 1956 he had five of the top sixteen songs, including:
1. Don't Be Cruel
2. Heartbreak Hotel
8. I Want You...
12. Hound Dog
16. Love Me Tender
Also that year were three more songs in the top fifty by The Platters (My Prayer, Great Pretender, Magic Touch), three songs by Little Richard, Blue Suede Shoes by Perkins, Sixteen Tons remained popular, and the aforementioned Flying Saucer novelty compilation.
Songs in the pop genre included Que Sera Sera sung by Doris Day and Hot Diggity sung by Perry Como.
As a fan of girls groups I would also mention Born to Be with You by the Chordettes.
