Some of what you say makes sense. I just keep wondering what Luke 16:23-24 is about if hell isn't a place of torment?

Luke 16:23-24 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

Listen to the words of Christ above all others.

Rev 14:11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

keep in mind, this is a parable... parables were not literal.

Thinking about some things pastors have said and listening to SafetySuit and stuff for the past week, I started thinking that hell can't last forever. It seems so wrong. It's so weird to think that people are going to be dead forever. I don't see how or why God would make hell last forever.

I believe hell is the discipline we receive when we sin. After we’ve been disciplined, we are forgiven. I believe this will always be true, both in this life and the life to come. Discipline can be very harsh for those that persist in their sin. Look around.

hell is not eternal. hell is not the lake of fire.

check revelation 20:14 if you dont believe me, and read it for yourself

Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

From what I've read, the lake of fire seems to be a place of eternal torment, not a state of non-existence.

You ask good questions selenah.

As Zilla has rightly pointed out, Luke 16:19-31 is a parable.

The two men represent two groups of people. The rich man pictured the Pharisees who once enjoyed a favored position with God, and Lazarus, the beggar, pictured the common folk, the poor, the weak and the ones who had given up trying to live up to their religious leaders' ridiculous standards. These are the ones whom the Pharisees despised as not worthy of their attention or help. Jesus called them "sheep without a shepherd". His heart went out to them.

Their deaths pictured a change in their circumstances. When Jesus came, he condemned the Pharisees because they were lousy shepherds of God's people. They were removed from their position of favor. (Abraham's bosom) They had made God's law into an impossible set of rigid rules that nobody could keep.
Work on the Sabbath was defined down to the last detail. They condemned Jesus apostles for plucking a few heads of grain on their way through a field as harvesting on the Sabbath. To kill a flea was considered "hunting" !!
The common people were like 'dirt' to these proud men who lived in the lap of luxury, imagining themselves to be above those "people of the earth".

Jesus came to teach the ones like Lazarus who were spiritually impoverished and needing good nourishing spiritual food to strengthen them and lift them up out of their pathetic state. Jesus did this for them and gave them the favored position...this tormented the "rich man" to no end.

Now if you read the entire parable it becomes obvious why it cannot be literal.
Do we imagine that 'heaven' and 'hell' are within talking distance to one another?

Would a single drop of water on someone's finger cool the tongue of someone in flames?

There are logical explanations to all things. But sometimes you need to have the courage to step outside the box. Those who followed Jesus in the first century needed to do this. They were howled down by well meaning members of Jewish society and no doubt by family members who wanted to stick to what they knew, afraid to believe something that wasn't 'mainstream'. The truth is, God's true worshippers have never been mainstream. Mainstream is the devil's domain.

Jesus said to expect persecution and hatred if we were going to follow him. Who were the ones who persecuted Jesus and his apostles? His own people. The truth upsets some people's applecart. They get mad when they have no answers or when their own beliefs are challenged.

If something troubles you, seek the answers and if your heart is sincere, God will provide them. Your own heart will then tell you what is truth. Jesus said, "You will know the truth and the truth will set you free" (John 8:31, 32)

The liberation from false beliefs is truly invigorating!

Blessings to you my young friend.

First of all Selenah, God created Hell for the devil and his angels. Matthew 25:41

And yes, Hell is forever. Read the King James Bible and see what it says in Revelation 14. In fact, I'll post it in here.

And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. - Revelation 14:11 (KJV)

And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. - Revelation 20:10-15 (KJV)

Selenah,
Ponder upon the following:

Eze 22:31 Therefore have I poured out mine indignation upon them; I have consumed them with the fire of my wrath: their own way have I recompensed upon their heads, saith the Lord GOD.

Psa 21:9 Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger: the LORD shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them.

You see, it is not a literal fire, but God's wrath which will be felt like a fire.

What you guys say does make sense. The way Molly explained the Lazarus story made alot of sense. Idk it goes against everything I always heard before though.

Revelation 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

From what I've read, the lake of fire seems to be a place of eternal torment, not a state of non-existence.

Fire is used in the Bible to denote complete and utter destruction. What is left after it has been consumed in a fire?

This lake of fire is never destroyed. Anyone who dares to rebel or misuse their free will in the 'new earth' will be consigned to the lake of fire...never to be seen again. Everlasting life on earth is dependent upon obedience to God. Adam would have continued to live if he had obeyed God's commands.

The lake of fire has a similar connotation to 'gehenna', which was Jerusalem's garbage dump. The bodies of dead criminals were cast there because they were not considered worthy of a decent burial and hence no memorial tomb with their names inscribed. No memorial tomb to a Jew, meant not being remembered by God in the resurrection.

The lake of fire means the second death.....death, not torture in flames forever. The first death is due to Adam's sin, the second death is due to a person's own willful sin once the sin of Adam is removed.

It is not more sinister than that. Those who want to paint God as a fiendish torturerof the wicked, do not know him. His justice is perfect so the lake of fire would be a complete travesty if sinful humans were forever condemned for something that is not their fault. God simply withdraws their gift of life. That is justice.

Selenah,

I know I said I would stop confronting "untruths" on your tread, but I cannot let this one go.

Molly said, "Everlasting life on earth is dependent upon obedience to God". Do you understand that this is calling Jesus and God a liar?

Molly said, "Those who want to paint God as a fiendish torturerof the wicked". What about God's glory, justice? Molly!!!!!!

Molly said, "Everlasting life on earth is dependent upon obedience to God". Do you understand that this is calling Jesus and God a liar?

How is this calling Jesus and God a liar?

What was God's first purpose in placing material creatures on a material earth in a material universe? Did he mention death as a natural event in human life? Do you see a lifespan mentioned to Adam and Eve?

Does death ever feel "normal" to you? We fight it because it was never meant to happen.

Death is not even mentioned in Eden except as a punishment for disobedience.

Do the math.....no disobedience would have meant NO DEATH.

There was a 'tree of life' in the garden as well as the 'tree of the knowledge of good and evil'. There was a prohibition on only one of those trees originally.

The 'tree of life' was there to ensure that mortal humans could live forever in the flesh. This is backed up by what Yahweh said in Gen 3:22....
"Then the Lord God said, “Look, the human beings have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!”

After the fall of man, God went to great lengths to make sure that no one could access that tree of life again. (Gen 3:23) These trees are not mentioned again until after the establishment of God's Kingdom in John's revelation. (Rev 22:1-3)

Molly said, "Those who want to paint God as a fiendish torturer of the wicked". What about God's glory, justice? Molly!!!!!!

God's purpose to have an earth filled with righteous children who would praise him in the physical realm will yet be realized.

When Adam and Eve were first created, there was no need of a savior; no need for a redeemer; no need for a kingdom. God was ruler in the world of mankind and it would have stayed that way if only the first humans had not succumbed to temptation. The services of the Christ were not needed until they had lost their perfection by becoming deliberately sinful. They had no sin nature to blame for their course. Both knew what the penalty was and both chose to disobey anyway.

It was an expression of God's grace that he sent Jesus to earth to pay the ransom for Adam's children. Adam and his wife were sentenced to death with no prospects of living again. There is not one single expression of remorse by them recorded in the Bible, nor even a sacrifice offered for their sin. There was no grounds on which to forgive them. They died and went back to the dust... that is what God said to Adam. (Gen 3:19) No afterlife of any description is mentioned for them. They will never be seen again.

God's justice demanded "eye for eye, tooth for tooth, life for life" Jesus ' perfect life was the corresponding ransom price for Adam's perfect life. That is why he had to come to earth and be born as a human child.

Without Jesus' 'perfect life' being laid down for us, mankind would have no hope of escaping the cycle of life and death that Adam's sin plunged us into. (Rom 5:12)

By laying down his life, Christ was able to take the sins of Adam's children out of existence and put them back on the road to everlasting life.....this is what Adam threw away. Jesus came to get it back for us.

The way God has dealt with rebellion, both in the spirit realm and the earthly one, will set precedents for all eternity. No rebel will be able to interfere with God's purpose ever again. The lake of fire remains forever as the receptacle for any, in heaven or on earth, who are foolish enough to disobey.

The outworking of God's plans for earth and its inhabitants is what will bring praise and honor and glory to the Most High. His first purpose will be realized and he can then get on with the next phase of his purpose...whatever that may prove to be.

It's a big universe.

Molly,

You are of many words but with no wisdom. What you say speaks for itself.....Tell me, either we have everlasting life or....."Anyone who dares to rebel or misuse their free will in the 'new earth' will be consigned to the lake of fire..."

I will not reply to anymore of your many words in this post

She's also another one who denies the deity of Jesus. There is no shortage of heretical and strange teachings, it's sad to say:(.
God bless, my friend.

Yep, CC seems to always have a resident group of heretics trying to spread their heresy.

For awhile it was the super-pentecostal/charismatics... I'd almost rather have them than those who would openly deny Christ as God.

That is a nice fairy-tale but that is not the justice of God. You don't even take into consideration the fierceness of His wrath that He will pour out on the children of disobedience of that great system of Babylon. There is eternal damnation in the justice of God...

Mk 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.

Mt 25:41,46 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

46 “Then they will go away to eternal (everlasting) punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Molly, would you like to explain this verse? If God is going to annihilate those who are children of disobedience, it would be as if they never existed and had no life, but the following verse in (Mk 14:21) seems to contradicts that...

21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.

If you are born and remained a child of disobedience and only the gift of life is taken from you and you are annihilated, why not live according to the lusts and appetites of the flesh and just live it up, after all you will only be annealed and never even know that you existed.

You rule out the book of life and the other books of (Rev 20:12,13) and all the judgments that are based upon what is written in those books. Why keep written books if God is just going to annihilate them in the end in the lake of fire? Punish them in the lake of fire to only annihilate them later and you call that justice. That is a very warped sense of justice that has nothing to do with the justice of God.

Is was the justice of God that motivated the love of God to send His Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish (kept from condemnation and eternal damnation) but have everlasting life. The wages of sin must be paid for, for those wages involve spiritual death, death to the soul, physical death, and eternal death in the lake of fire (the second death), which burneth with fire and brimstone (Rev 21:8), where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Mt 13:42), where the worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched (Mk 9:44,46,48), where there will be torment forever and ever (Rev 20:10), because death and hell shall be throne into the lake of fire (Rev 20:14), God's eternal damnation upon the wicked and the children of disobedience (Mt 23:33, Mk 12:40, 16:16, 2Cor 2:12, Jn 5:29, Rom 3:8, 2Pt 2:3).
