The only real problem I've had isn't in hearing God, it's in feeling him. I've never actually felt him. While ot ers I know have "literally felt his arms around them".

I've never felt His arms around me either.

But He makes His presence known. Just being out in nature, I feel His presence INTENSELY. His creation speaks of Him. His Word speaks of Him. Other people share their experiences of Him.

You will 'feel' Him in many different ways throughout your life :)

Oh, I've felt some pretty intense stuff, that I knew weren't me... And I'm very connected with nature, so I've felt him that way... But I kinda meant, when I need a hug, or I need the kind of peace that will settle my aching heart, I've never felt it.

I say this because I don't belive in chance. I am not saying God removes our freedom of choice, but I say that He always tries to lead us in the right direction.

I'm fairly certain you don't realize the implications of saying something like: "I don't believe in chance." Have you ever taken a math statistics class? God designed the universe to run in a certain predictable order. Chance has been tested and proven. And works reguardless of who you are. There are ways of predicting the chance that things will happen. When a manufacterure produces a watch with a battery, he expects it to run a certain amount of time before the battery runs out or the watch breaks. Without knowing the scientifically measured level of chance that something will break, companies wouldn't be confident enough to issue out warrenties. So yes chance exists. I believe God created the universe so intelligently that it, has rules in and of itself, much like the Creator Himself has perfect self-control and lives by His own good morals.

Actually, I find that the vague things are what, in hindsight, seem to be things that might have been guidance from God. Sounds like hindsight bias to me.

Honestly, if God literally talked to me I think I'd be to terrified to do anything. That grates me. I'm the opposite. I would do anything to have God directly tell me what to do. That way I could always trust that I'm doing the best thing and the thing that well have the most reward and the wisest thing and the most productive and rational thing.

This is SO true. I count 3 'voices' in my head.....me, Satan, and the Holy Spirit. It's kind of tricky sometimes to figure out who's talking :)

Sounds rather psychotic I guess, but our minds are where the spiritual battle mainly takes place. Developing good spiritual discernment is a must.
Im glad you found it helpful. I've learned though through some of my reading that eventually we are to not have any thoughts at all but only divine vision of God (theoria). Because if we have thoughts, it means that we are still living in the rational and psychological level of being. This is not a spiritual thing but an earthly thing, it is earthly wisdom. We have to surpass that through noetic vision of God (if you know what that means).

That's where I am. I can't really say I feel God. It's more of an intellectual knowledge. I know that I know the He is with me always but I yearn to actually feel Him. I yearn to hear Him as well. To know what He wants from me. Yes, I have faith and know that He works out everything for my good and yes, I know I have to be patient and wait for God's timing. But I wonder how His timing will work out when I don't have money to put gas in my car so I can work. If I ask for help, like a loan from my sister or go to a Pay Day Advance, which I've felt I had to do, is that a lack of faith? Or is it doing what I can so God will do what I cannot? I pray to hear from God as to what I should do next but am at a loss as to an answer.

Dear Lord, help me feel Your loving arms around me. Help me to know I can let go and You will catch me. I cast my cares to You and pray for an answer.

Sorry, please explain "noetic vision of God"

I vaguely recall the term " noetic" (which my Spell Check does not seem to recognize), when I was getting involved in a spiritual group that leaned toward true consciousness rather than God, Jesus and the Bible. I was searching for several years before I discovered Christ and the church.

??? what do you want to ask God? He has already revealed all you need to know in the BIBLE.

how should you live your life?

Titus 2
New King James Version (NKJV)

2 But as for you, speak the things which are proper for sound doctrine: 2 that the older men be sober, reverent, temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience; 3 the older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things— 4 that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be blasphemed.

6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility,[a] 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.

9 Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, 10 not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

15 Speak these things, exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you.

Personally I feel God's presence by having a peace in my heart and a song of joy in the background of my mind when I walk with Him. When I do something wrong or think something mean the music stops and my heart grows troubled so I stop what I'm doing and pray and ask God to show me what I did wrong. then I repent and the music and peace comes back.

That is most of my life. If you read the Bible you will see that Moses lived in the desert as a sheep herder for 40 years without directly hearing from God.

God spends time to train us to do certain things. He uses different methods to teach us patience, joy, love, peace, goodness, self control, gentleness, loyalty, virtue, brotherly kindness, sound doctrine, etc.

Sometimes God sends us dreams, sometimes God sends us people, but most of all we have His Holy Spirit and the Bible to teach and guide us.

I tend to pray God please place in me only desires that are in line with YOUR will and remove from my mind and heart anything that is contrary to Your will. Lord convict me of my transgressions, show me my secret faults and forgive me and allow me to forgive others, help me to overcome and tear down any strongholds that are in my mind and life that war against you. help me to be Your hands and feet and speak words of life, words of encouragement, love and peace to those around me. Thank You God for the many loving and kind people you have placed around me. In Jesus name amen.

then i just live in faith and trust that God will take care of it all and help me be who I'm meant to be and do the things that need to be done in the day. He'll let me know or prevent me from misstepping. sometimes I think God lets me fall so that others can help me get up again. for it is good for us to help others but it is also good to allow others to help us.

Noetic, comes from the Greek word "NOUS". It is basically the eye of the heart (or soul) by which a person has the ability to perceive God as He really is. "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God". When you cleanse this part of yourself from intellectual baggage and sinful tendencies, you will be able to see God and eternal realities. When I say you will "see God", this is to be understood in the context that God is a mystery and is seen only mysteriously in the heart. Basically, what the nous is is the part of your being that is able to commune and understand the deep things of God (in a mystery).

Its kind of complicated I know, but its real.

Maybe read this, it may clarify things (from my Churches perspective):

ORTHODOXY IN THE 21st CENTURY: NOUS, Gnosis, Theoria and Theosis

Edit: When I say "deep things of God", I am talking about the Holy Trinity; the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Never should these three be separate or else you may get into trouble.

Are you talking about an audible voice? If that's the case, I have never heard one, but I don't really need to...praise God if He does though :).
He talks to us through many ways, but I would say the Bible is where we should focus our attention because that's his complete revelation, perfect and uncorrupted.
God can do whatever He wants, he can use persons, situations, silence, dreams, feelings (conscience), thoughts, and maybe even audible voices...but what we should focus the most is on his Word, only through his words we can verify that everything else we felt or heard is from Him.

I've noticed that the more I learn from the Bible, the more I'm able to recognize those other non-readable messages. I liked what Max Lucado said in one of his books, something like putting on Jesus' glasses to see the world so you will be able to see things you didn't see before( I'm paraphrasing, I don't remember what he actually said). Taking that phrase I think you can say the same for our ears....and everything we have.

how would you know it wasn't you imagening things? Just like you said my notion of Gods guidance being hindsight?

Don't just sit there crying with your arms held up, waiting to be picked up....move forward.
no god is worth following if it cannot hear your cries.

peace.

C.S. Lewis wrote: "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, and shouts in our pains; it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world". I find that it is not only up to Him to choose how to elucidate to us, but also, how we choose to listen.
