To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
Isaiah 8:20

Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
Proverbs 30:5-6

Mcap: I stand corrected. I was trying to impress him with the importance of the Bible for Christians as opposed to other writings. He doesn't 'get it' .
My frustration over Eric's lack of understanding is no excuse for sarcasm. We should all pray for the eyes of his understanding to be opened.
Eric, I apologize.
Maggie

You say you stand corrected. But, unfortunately, I doubt it. You equate God with the bible. You limit yourself to solely using the bible to understand Jesus. When the bible itself does not teach that it is the sole rule of faith. Jesus himself never wrote a word, never told his apostles to write anything. You ignore the Early Church Fathers which would help you interpret what was being written down.

I doubt that you have been corrected.

Nevertheless,

Peace be With You

We must not forget that we as Christians are to accept all people, and our job is to win them to Christ thru love and kindness, not by thumping them on the head with our Bible.Satan loves it when stuff like this happens,we argue over who is right and who is wrong. Our religion is suffering because of this.
Amen mcap they will know we are Christian by our love. The Bible is for us to thump our ownselves about the head to know Gods will for us and Gods truth. thumping someone else will have little effect in my opinion. It is however SO VERY IMPORTANT to seek the Lord in his HOly word cause this is where we know him and grow in him. Dont use his word to attack others, use it to reflect on our own walk and listen when we feel the nigglings of conviction when issues hit us in the heart. The issues we react the strongest about are sometimes the issues where we require change and good olefashioned pride likes to get in the way. Some of us could use more spiritual growth as opposed to legalism and some of us could use some grounding in the word. Thankfully receiving Christ covers us in our failings as Christians we should however in all things seek to know his will. His will is found in the Bible. Not just a book, the word of God.

Oh, Eric...you so missed the point of what I said.

Tell me, when you stand before the throne of God and He asks you how it was that you elevated the writings of RCC priests and your 'church fathers' above His own written Word TO US, what will you say?

Are many converts are won over by participating in debates? Information can be learned by debating, certainly, and debating is a good way to sharpen your argumentative skills. But I think future converts are often some of the ones on the sidelines, like watching a tennis match, but listening and learning and seeing how one debater responds to another. The people doing the debating do not usually much convince each other of anything, whether their goal is to just argue there, or try to persuade.

The so-called "early church fathers" do not establish truth, scripture does. The "fathers" merely illustrate what the thinking was in their day. They show us what was being said and done.
And knowing what the thinking was in their day is of vital importance. They lived far closer to the time of Christ and the Apostles. Somne of them actually knew the Apostles and were taught by them, or they were taught by a first generation disciple of an Apostle. Their "take" on a passage or practice has a lot more credibility than a modern day interpretation or conclusion. Their similarculture, theircloser in time knowledge of Apostolic teaching, gives their conclusion a lot more credibility than some prophet or preacher in the 19th or 20th century, fabricating a new, "truer" form of the Truth. Often in the bible a passage may be unclear or afford several possible plausible interpretations. Here too, the Early Church Fathers are used to clarify or pick from alternative interpretations. Reading the Early Church Fathers in indispensable towards an accurate knowledge of Christian theology

While 'theology' has its uses, it is merely the OPINION of man!! WEBSTERS: Theology: "the study of religious faith, practice, and experience ; especially : the study of God and of God's relation to the world"

Scriptures tells us to be "doers of the Word". If we DO the word of God, we don't need the to rely on the opinions of man.

It is best for you not to engage in disparaging remarks. Unless you want to discuss substantive issues on a thread, I suggest you not post.

It was not a derogatory remark, it was a sincere question! That you take offense at it, when we should be asking all we encouter 'where will you spend eternity?"........
