I was thinking yesterday about all of the things we share with family, friends, co-workers, etc.: some new movie or book, the best clearance sales, a new product, fun vacation spots....but are hesitant at times to share the most important thing in our lives - Jesus.

We worry that we'll offend someone. We worry that we're being too pushy. We worry that we won't say something just right.

I want to relax about all of that and just share Him with people as comfortably and lovingly as I share news about my OTHER family members. And not tell them only, but SHOW them. One thing I do NOT want is to ever have to attend the funeral of a friend or loved one and have that question hanging in the air...

Why didn't you tell me about Jesus???!!!

If we love them as we say we do and as the Lord wants us to, we will.

Everyone knows what your friend would say to you if they found out you knew there were free chocolate-covered pretzels down the hall, and didn't tell them. "Why didn't you tell me???" How much more important is this? Well said Jullianna.

I think in America and even the western cultures 98% of the people have heard the Gospel. They've been saturated in it. So often failure of someone to believe in Jesus isn't the result of a friend not sharing.

Anyways for me, I guess I'm concerned about the pushy factor, seeing the Gospel really has saturated most in America already. I do try to keep an eye and ear open for opportunities to address it if it comes up.

They probably have, Stilly, but I wonder how many times they've actually SEEN it play out day to day, you know?:(

And it bugs me sometimes HOW they may have heard it.... Seems like so often they heard it in some cold finger pointing in your face kinda way, rather than in a loving life application kinda way from someone they trust to truly have their best interests at heart.

But, I agree, the pushy thing isn't my style.

Yeah! Many people find it very difficult to telk their family and friends about Jesus including myself also. Not because we are ashame of the gospel.I can't just explain why.May God help us.

I'm not pushy either... but then a lot of times I really just want to be like John the Baptist... So I want to be pushy. But do I want it enough yet I don't know. I need to learn more but what little I do know I share in small portions... :( But its terrible when the person who I was teaching suddenly vanishes from my daily routine... Then this is where I want to wander & share the good news with anyone.

Between the Westborough Baptist type, high profile leaders in the church that have fallen hard, and others who completely discredit the Gospel with their lifestyles, we as Christians, have a difficult stereotype to overcome in western culture. Even though we may not realize it, people are watching us for any sign of that hypocrisy in us.

What's that old song? We're the only Bibles some folks will ever read?

P.S. - I read that Canada is forbidding the Westborough folks to cross their border. Haven't checked it out personally yet though.

Somehow I think you are thinking about this song by Steve Green. You're The Only Jesus - YouTube

As far as Canada refusing Westborough to cross their border, it wouldn't surprise me at all. Canada has laws on the books prohibiting "hate speech" that are strict enough that a pastor could be arrested for preaching on different passages that call the act of homosexuality an abomination.

Of course a thread on this topic would be incomplete without the quote attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. "Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary use words"

Before I became a christian, I thought of christians as aggressive, bible-thumping fools who didn't deserve my time nor attention, and if a freind came up to me and tried to preach to me I would tell them to save it for the birds and think twice about why I am friend's with that person.

Dude, that's my avatar!

Yep :) That's it! Thanks!

'Had a pretty good discussion recently with someone about the hate speech thing in the news forum, so I don't want to be redundant here. Sadly, it's a pendulum that can swing too far either way and turn into a weapon, huh?

Sometimes we forget that love can be the cause for both the building of bridges and the burning of them.

One great lesson about not being afraid of the gospel I learnt, came through my brother in law (who is not a Christian).
Weeks before my wedding, my husbands close family came to New Zealand to attend and have a holiday themselves and during that time I got to know them all (since Id only previously spent a few days with them a year ago). So we got to do a bit of traveling together in this van we rented. And while traveling I figured out how much of a cool family I was marrying into esp my husbands brother. The one thing though I discovered that really bothered me about him was his confidence in himself while not wearing a seatbelt. As a passenger and a driver this made me hugely uncomfortable, and here in NZ its illegal to drive a car with the occupants not belted in. Eg if there was a car crash and he died, I would have been convicted of manslaughter.

But what shocked me even more was how normal this action was to other family members. I plead and bribed my brother in law to put his seat belt on but he never did and othesr laughed and told me not to bother, because he had always been like that and they had come to accept it, even if it was stupid.

I thought about it some time later and came to a realisation about something. Heres me worrying about how to express and verbalise my faith to my family and husbands family, and I realised if they can come to an acceptance to something that is meaningful to my brother (as stupid as it is), then they can surely accept my beliefs and values even if they don't agree. And I would hope that my following and having faith in Jesus is more acceptable and sensible than having faith that all will be ok if someone never wears a seatbelt.

The world tends to be about judgement, vanity and pride so we tend to fall into the flow with trying to make sure we that we don't displease any one person is the daily things that we do and say. The thing is that, the person that introduces one to God or his son Jesus, is the person that loves them the most :O) We should never hesitate to spread the word.

Well, now I wanna know how you became a Christian!

Sorry for potentially thread-crashing, Jullianna. :(
