It seems that any place that has groups of people in regular contact with each other has it's rumor mill. Places of employment, churches, social groups, and of course Christian Chat all seem to have them to one degree or another.

Half the time no one knows how any particular rumor may have gotten started, but almost definitely once it's started it's almost impossible to kill since they quickly evolve as they get passed around from person to person. Time and again I've seen feelings hurt, reputations damaged, and friendships ruined by garbage that originated in a rumor mill.

So many rumors may start off innocently enough, a comment made in jest that someone takes seriously and passes on, someone stating an opinion or observation about someone that suddenly becomes fact, an assumption made from incomplete information getting passed on as gospel.

rumors will always stay as rumos . yes , of course if someone wants to drown someone then he will make from nothing something ... too sad tht often ppl tend to believe what they hear instead of go and talk to the person to find out whats true and whats not ...

My point, which I didn't really put in the original post because I thought it would be understood, is that rumors get spread. How? By gossips. People who's personal lives are so uninteresting and unfulfilling that they have to get their noses in everyone's business. True, not everyone who passes gossip fits that mold, but it seems that those who do it the most do.

It seems to me that Christian Chat can be worse than most social arenas for gossip spreading. Maybe it's because there are a boat load of people (5,500 active users) whose relationships with each other are fleeting. Sure, there a core groups that have been active for a long time, but a lot of people come and go. True intimate friendships are made with some, but most people never really progress beyond acquaintances. It seems to me that in this dynamic gossip is more prone to be spread since we don't really "know" each other, and as a result people are more prone to do and say things without thinking how it could affect others.

Some of us that have been around for a while have been the victim of the rumor mill more than once, even those of us who have impeccable reputations and are well known. All it takes for the rumor mill to start grinding here is for someone to see two people alone in a chat room, or see some ''flirty'' forum posts passed between two people and suddenly half the site thinks they are a couple. A comment made in jest about someone stalking, and within days no one gives that person the time of day. Some makes a forum post about a problem they're having with an unspecified other person, and suddenly everyone is making the assumption that other person MUST be a user here. The list is endless of the rumors that fly around here.

I guess my point in all this is don't be a part of the rumor mill. Scripture is quite clear on the subject of gossip, and a lot of people just need to learn how to keep their assumptions to themselves, their mouths shut, and their noses out of other people's personal business.

For the record: This rant has not been directed at any particular person or persons just to kill that rumor before it starts. It's just an issue that has touched me closely recently.

Usually rumor starters/gossips end up burning in their own fires that they set. Most of the time.....

This is how I beleive rumors get started; When you talk to people about your problems they start telling other people your problems. So when I have to air out my dirty laundry I do it on my theropist. She is not aloud to tell any body what I say to her except to my doctor.
If you have a problem that you dont want to get circulated I sugguest you talk to a proffessional . It you cant afford to pay for consuling you may talk to your minister.

That reminds me, did you hear what so and so said about so and so? so and so told so and so and they told zan that so and so said ................

Snickers :p

rumors its like broken phone every other person adds something from himself and so on ....

I do agree that many of the those in the rumor mill end up getting ground with their own stones eventually, but usually not until they've left a path of destruction in their wake. I think you and I are probably more aware than many of the excess drama that these people create, that we get to deal with.
