We are all different. God made us that way. He meets us where we are in more ways than salvation.

There's no magic formula on how to find someone to share your life. Perhaps that's the message behind the stories we read about how those in scripture found mates. Some were created especially for the other. Some couples were introduced by a third party. Some were arranged. Some had to go after them. Some were brought to them. Some met along the way.

Some choose to put more restrictions upon themselves than scripture calls us to do. Some don't. Some like complicated. Some don't.

And hopefully all guys are among the "like complicated" because ALL girls certainly are. ;) :P

Many seem to be able to look for God's calling on their lives in many aspects except their love stories. It's not about what one likes or doesn't, how complicated it is or isn't, it's about how involved you believe God is in your life, and the right he has to it. If you believe that marriage amongst other things is a calling or not. If you believe God is a God of purpose and order, (as many examples of callings on biblical characters show) or not.

Our Love stories are as individual as we all are. But as all other aspects of our lives they aren't our own, they are God's. Those that hold on to tightly to them, as in anything in our lives, tend to get in God's way. As in anything that we focus on or hold to tightly to, they become idols. Elisabeth Elliot is correct in zan's opinion when she says that unless one is content with God's calling of singleness on one's life, they aren't ready for God's calling of marriage.

One of the things that zan looks for when it comes to maturity is balance and patience. It's a red flag when you see someone constantly focused on any one aspect of their lives and are constantly in a hurry to gain it. I see many, many, single people focused on what they don't have rather than what God has called them to atm. The balance as with any God given desire is giving it to God in faith and being patient to know however it is he chooses to move he is trustworthy and faithful. He is bigger than our shortcomings and able to bring about his will regardless if we have it all right or not. It's our heart he wants, and for him to be what's important FIRST.

Zan has wondered, and it bothers zan, when he see's so many wonderful people single. They have such a God honoring desire to be married. Zan has wondered and pondered why that is? Is it Gender confusion? Is it the lack of mum and dad showing an example because they divorced? Is it deep heartache? Insecurity? Is it that they want what they can take from relationships rather than what they can give? Is it sexual involvement before marriage? baggage? Religious difference? lack of maturity? or a combination ?

When talking to those people almost every time it seems, they talk about their discontentment with their singleness, and their frustration with God and his seemly lack of movement. Almost never do you hear them talk about where God has called them to atm, and what they feel they are called to as a single. They talk about all that they don't have because they are single, without even mentioning what they do have because they are single. Never has zan ever heard anyone thank God for where he has them as a single. It seems to Zan that their singleness is more important to them than accepting God's calling and searching and acting in obedience to it. Zan wonders if you can't trust God with your singleness can you trust him with your marriage? If God would show you whom he wants you to marry, and then as with Abraham and Isaac, asked you to choose between him and that person, who would you choose?

Zan believes he was placed in that circumstance. For ten years he saw miracles that can't be explained away. Heard God's voice very clearly. Saw him move in situation after situation. Making a way out of no way multiple times. Having other Godly people see conformation of what God was saying. Sought Godly counsel in God's word, church leadership, mentors and family if there was anything that they saw zan was trusting God with and where he was leading that was contrary to God's word or unbiblical?

Usually when God calls you to something it's bigger than you so you can see it's him. The prayers that started it all were first, i started praying Father, please give me the heart of David, the wisdom of Solomon, and the faith of Abraham. That lead to the second, i gave my singleness over to God and told him i was ok with being single and if it was his desire for the boys to have a step mother he would have to bring her along i wasn't looking, i trusted him. I explained in detail the type of woman i felt she would be and the heart she would have. What he had placed on my heart to desire in a
woman. And what felt he placed on my heart, the passion for ministry we would share.

This all started in 2001. She was in ministry already well known. It made no sense at all what i felt God was calling me to. Was a huge struggle.
Many made fun of me. I was very worried what the kids would think. They saw miracles too eventually and believed themselves God was leading. I could tell you story after story that would make your jaw drop. Zan is about as conservative as you can get in his theology. As the years went by God used very strongly over and over EVERY time the stories of Abraham and Sarah getting ahead of God's timing and trying to help God keep his promise with Hagar and Ishmael when i wanted to move and pursue. And when i wanted to quit because it was to difficult the story of Jonah trying to run from God's will.

As the years went by and i saw her impatience growing, her confusion when my daughter and i would go see her, knowing i drove many hours to see her, why i wasn't pursuing . She knew i wanted to. I pleaded with God. Wrote letters i planned on giving her explaining. Time and time again planned to talk to her when i saw her. But time and time again i felt very strongly him saying "zan i don't need your help" Can you truly Love her if you don't love me first? Who do you choose me or her?

See the whole point to this story is..... It was never about her, it's always been about HIM. As i have told this story in the past and people have ridiculed me for it, saying i was just infatuated blah blah blah, what they didn't understand was, yes i Loved her because i knew she was God's choice, but it wasn't about her it was always about HIM. I pleaded with him after Ten years of waiting on him for her, to allow me to pursue. I knew she wasn't gunna wait much longer. She didn't, she's married now. I can't tell you how much i miss her but you know, I don't miss her half as much as i miss God's involvement and leading in all of it.

My heart aches because i feel i lost God. That i did or didn't do something right. Either she didn't wait, i heard wrong, or i did something to loose that calling. Or it could be God answered my prayer when i prayed he would bring someone closer to God, better looking, more talented, , more her age, and more what she was looking for. It also aches because i fear i effected my children's faith in a negative way and lost respect when it comes to my faith.

Some might say that it was a waste of ten years. I myself don't understand. Perhaps i never will. One thing i can say is i know i can Love someone very much because in order to Love her i had to Love God first and do as he says first. I was willing to wait when i didn't want to. I was willing to give her to him and trust him. When he asked Me or her I chose him. Not perfectly, zan has sin in his life, perhaps i didn't mature to the place i needed to be to take on that responsibility. Point is i may have failed in a lot of ways, but i found out that when it comes to my Love story, It starts with HIM in order for me to Love HER. No matter how badly i wanted to take i trusted Him more. It's not about a mate, it's about Loving God and he'll add all these things.

Which leads me back to my prayer that started it all. Father please give me the heart of David, the wisdom of Solomon, and the Faith of Abraham. Perhaps i am getting what i prayed for. Love HIM before you think of him or her.

I may look foolish, but God knows my heart. Perhaps i didn't get my Rachel after waiting. But i was willing to wait and trust. :)

I read the OP. Very good post.

I don't believe that there is "only one person" for me. I would imagine that in this world there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of women that would make suitable mates for me. Each one has her own strengths and weaknesses to various degrees. No matter which one I select, it's not going to be a perfect match. There's going to be some aspect of her body or personality that I just don't like. Marriage is about communication and compromising for mutual benefit. Obviously God knows who we will choose, but he lets us do the choosing. Which by the way is why we must be careful, and after that fact not take the marriage lightly.

Honestly, it's depressing to see how dismally high divorce rates are in America. In those arranged marriages, you didn't see much divorce, did you? Or consider the older generations, who didn't to arranged marriages. They didn't give up when things got tough; they worked through it. Marriages will have hard things. Working through it is the name of the game. It's not all rosy and romantic like the media wants to portray it.

What makes it even more depressing is this: in the modern dating system, we are very free to pick for a mate the person we like the most. Old times didn't have that. Courting had that to a degree, but it was more practically-oriented (which is why I prefer it over dating) which meant there wasn't the "feel good" aspect to it. Yet so often we decide hey, this person isn't so cool after all. Come on now.

When it comes to people who are "waiting for God to bring that right someone into my life," but are not actually looking for someone, I don't think they're doing it right. Recall the story of Jacob. He labored for 14(?) years to get his lady. What I mean is, people who are "waiting on God" are usually just living normal life, idly awaiting some divine signal that they've met the one for them. That's not how dating works. You have to put yourself out there and meet with people and through those experiences determine if that person would be a good mate for you. It's not normal for God to simply deposit someone into your lap and say "This person is for you."

Now obviously, God is powerful enough that he can and occasionally will bypass these statements. I'm just saying what I believe to be the norm, not the exception. God can (and indeed will) do whatever he darn well pleases. :D

I think we demonize sex far too much in the Christian circle. Yes, premarital sex is bad and I doubt I will ever show approval of it. Yet it seems young people ever only hear "sex is bad sex is bad sex is bad." Sex is not bad. Sex is good in the proper context. And no, the male libido is not this tyrannical monster just waiting for the moment to possess a man and make him do things he will later regret. I literally speak from experience. If a person is sufficiently educated about God's standards for us as well as our understanding of our own (and our girlfriend's) weaknesses, we can manage that. In my previous relationship, I had no difficulty being left alone with just my girlfriend in my house for a day. My parents were visiting family halfway across the nation. Want to know what we did? Cuddled up on the couch and watched TV pastors. XD If you can handle that, fine. If you can't, don't be foolish enough to put yourself in that kind of situation.

Some people distinguish "dating" from "friendship" based on one thing: physical intimacy. More specifically, kissing. A man and a woman who are interested in each other remain "friends" by going out only on group dates and refraining from intimate contact of any description. Apparently, this means they aren't dating.

Well this could be a problem, I don't really plan on kissing till I'm married.(Since I really just don't trust myself. I was also only planning on group dates till marriage. But then again there is stuff like skype...

Call me a lost, irrational, romantic, but I do believe Providence is hurtling me and a woman together.

My two cents on the main argument going on. No, I have nothing to back it up with other than an impression.

Loved the OP by the way! Social Artist is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I don't agree 100% of the time, but his posts are always thought provoking.

I haven't taken the time to read all the post, and even though it strikes a very passionate part of my heart, I'll reserve my opinion. I've seen these perspectives and stances many times. That being said i will share a conversation i had with my niece not to long ago.

I once asked my niece who was writing a paper for college on online dating and was trying to sign me up, when it came to choosing her mate how would that come about? She began to list some qualities and stances she had on it. I asked her then basically, YOUR saying YOU know what YOU need in a mate. So YOU have these qualities, these ideas, these things that YOU feel will be a fit for your life in mate selection. YOU have to go MAKE it happen. She said that the things on her list and the qualities that she seeks in a guy she believes is what God would want her to look for. So what your saying is the first guy that comes along that has YOUR list of qualities, that your attracted to, that YOU feel is a fit, that you feel your compatible with, and that God would accept your gunna marry? she of course said yes. God wants me to be happy. So a mate is based on what YOU think makes you most happy, for what he will be able to give you? She said yes, God wants me to be happy. So mate selection then is based on what you get from them. I asked, How will you know how to choose if there are multiple choices , what if the first one that comes along that basically fits what you want, what makes you happy, and that you feel your compatible with, and that God accepts, is only half as good as the next one that comes along?

I then asked , sweetheart, do you believe that when a man and a woman move into a conventional marriage and become a one flesh person, that God has purpose for that one flesh person as much as an individual person? She agreed and said yes. I then asked if she's familiar with Psalm 139? She said she was. I then asked, if God foreknew you as an individual person with a specific design and purpose and all the days of your life, wouldn't he be as specific in the plans and purposes he has for the one flesh person he creates in a marriage covenant? She thought a moment and agreed. So that means then that if your free to just choose, that God does what, waits to see who you select and then makes plans for you as a couple?

Then going back to the belief that a person knows what's best for them in mate selection based on compatibility, religious belief, qualities, attraction, standards, etc. I asked, Is Love a feeling or a commitment and a decision ? She said some of both. I said ok, what if God's best for you wasn't someone that had the qualities or looks or money or background you wanted, or was perfectly compatible with you? Could it be possible as Hosea and Gomer were placed together for a specific purpose, that God knows a specific purpose for your marriage that isn't what you think it is? Could it be possible that God places couples together because one is used to bring about things in the other? Perhaps what's best isn't to have someone that so perfectly fits. Perhaps Loves greater purpose is not happiness but Joy. The Joy of fulfilling the plans and purposes he has for you as a couple. Perhaps it's more the passion and desire he gives for that purpose that should be more of a guide of knowing God's will for a mate? Perhaps the Christ likeness that is developed learning to give rather than take, Learning to love someone besides their quirks is more God honoring than circumstantial happiness? Perhaps the struggles in marriage that people base divorce on are the very struggles needed to develop what honors Him most? That doesn't mean that those things God says we should look for in a mate aren't important, they are part of finding God's will and a basic guide, but God knows how to fit together what he wants together. Perhaps it's not always what makes sense.

Could it be that God in his mercy watches people choose on their own (as they do in many things in life that aren't God's will) and still blesses that marriage covenant but it isn't God's best they could have had if they would have given God the pen to their love story? Zan has run into several good Godly women that i could see as mates, but how could i possibly choose? Based on what? How do i know the plans and purposes he has for me in marriage? Zan could learn to love many women, because Love ultimately is choice. So what, i just try to FIND the one i think is the prettiest i can get or the most compatible? I couldn't choose without knowing God's will. I then asked her, do you think KNOWING who God has chosen and that you are with the one whom God would have you with, knowing that in your heart of hearts, would be the greatest strength in the struggles and work of marriage? What greater blessing you both would have knowing God placed you together, for a purpose and there is NO mistake?

She said then what you sit around and wait for God to bring someone? I said, Rebekah was out doing what God had for her for the day and wasn't husband hunting, neither was Ruth. God brought things together and made his will clear. I told her if your in community, out and about doing God's will and open to his leading, perhaps you don't have to MAKE it happen.

I asked, do you believe that God's will can be accomplished even if you try to make it happen with eharmony or such things? Her response was yes, she feels God can make a way to that right person in many ways. I smiled and said, that right person huh?

I noticed even in the postings where people believe they have to go make it happen and that there is more than one choice, and in many conversations as these, that they will use the words, God will lead me to the right one, not A right one :p

I love how you think Zander :) I especially loved that ^^ part

Well this could be a problem, I don't really plan on kissing till I'm married.(Since I really just don't trust myself. I was also only planning on group dates till marriage. But then again there is stuff like skype...

I want you to commit to trusting yourself. Remove self-condemnation from your life. You're a great guy man.

Myth #5: "A man's sexuality is a ravenous, snarling beast that should be kept in a cage until he's married."
I admit I've never heard it put that way, but the implication is out there. Any lecture or book on dating inevitably includes something about sex (and, yes, this one does too). Frequently, the message is "Control yourself! Your sex drive is out to get you! It's just waiting for one weak moment to jump out and turn you into a nymphomaniac and demolish your soul." And then we wonder why so many Christians end up with sexual problems, both before and after marriage.

The Bible tells us to save sex for marriage (1Cor. 7:2). That's crucial. But you knew that already. The problem is we tend to emphasize this prohibition and leave it at that. No one talks about sexuality before marriage because sexuality before marriage is bad.

This leaves us with a small problem. Our sexuality is part of who we are from the moment we're born. If you take away a man's sexuality, you take away his identity. Your sexuality will be there, playing an active role, from the moment you ask a woman out. In fact, without sexuality, men wouldn't date. They'd play video games and eat pizza. Our sexuality is what gets us interested in women in the first place, and that's a good thing.

Did you think God gave you a sex drive just to torture you until you got married? There are plenty of things God does that I don't understand, but he's not cruel. Many people confuse sexual drives with sinful desires. Though sexual drives, like all drives, can become sinful, they're holy in their raw state. Yes, I said holy. Your sex drive comes from God. If you don't think that makes it holy, take it up with him.

Disagree. 1 Corinthians 7:2 DOES NOT SAY have sex before marriage.

1 Corinthians 7

New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Teaching on Marriage

7 Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman. 2 But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband.

Looks like 1 Corinth. 7 is about people who are ALREADY married...

*sigh* I really don't get things like this sometimes. If you're having sex before marriage what's the point of actually GETTING married?

The Bible tells us to save sex for marriage (1Cor. 7:2). See he was right the firsttime even though you attempted to correct it. That's crucial. But you knew that already.

The problem is we tend to emphasize this prohibition and leave it at that. No one talks about sexuality before marriage because sexuality before marriage is bad. <- This isn't in the Bible, sex/=sexuality.

Sexuality exists inside each person. Embracing it doesnt mean going out and having premarital sex or anything of the sort. Human male sexuality covers physiological, psychological, social, cultural, and political aspects of the human male sexual response and related phenomenon. It encompasses a broad range of issues, including male sexual desires and behaviors which as a part of human sexuality, have also been addressed by principles of ethics, morality, and religion.

tl;dr Sexuality is completely different from sex, and learning definitions should be vital when commenting.

okay...I read over that like three times...I thought it said HAVE sex before marriage not SAVE sex...grrrrrr. Though still...unfortunately a lot of good christian people say that it isn't a sin to have sex before marriage. =\

*realizes now how even a letter difference can throw the context of a whole entire argument *

I feel that this contradicts 1 Corinthians 7.

Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” 2 But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. 3 The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife. 5 Do not deprive each other except perhaps by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. 6 I say this as a concession, not as a command. 7 I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.

I think this is talking in general, not about just married people. There is more later on which I think would contradict what I have highlighted out anyway. Why is that particular passage so messy, I feel like I have read it 50 times and don't understand it.

okay...I think I might see where he's coming from now....is he basically saying don't emphasize on the temptation? Because the more you think about it the worse it gets, and the more you're reminded about it the harder it gets? *decides to read over that last point ONE MORE TIME to make sure*

(Sorry guys....when you're running on 5 hours of sleep because you're sleeping on the floor, your brain decides to go all "Hey let's confuse Lil and make everything harder to read and make this word look like that and make everything confusing for her!!" >.< though I slept better last night and so hopefully that won't happen again for a while. :) Also, now that I understand it I think it's not bad of an article and I'll be taking down notes for whenever I am in a relationship. God Bless! :))

Don't worry about it, if I had a dime for every mistake I have made, will I wouldn't have to work, I think you have a few trillion mistakes to make before, you catch up with me.

for me (about 'waiting'')...just do what you have to do and what you think will make you happy with God by your side because eventually He will do the rest...just be faithful... :)

sigh, Do we really believe it's all about what we think will make us happy? *shakes his head*

my apology if that offended your belief (feeling), of course it is not all about what we think that makes us happy but my point is that, you think on those things that will make you happy with God's guidance (through reading the word of God and prayers) and not selfish thoughts....

hope i understand your question right and that i make my self clear.
