I work in a man's world. Always have. In that world you must say what you have to say decidedly and clearly. I tend to say exactly what is on my mind. The thing is, in person people have the advantage of hearing the tone of your voice, which helps avoid misunderstandings much of the time. Online this is not so, is it?

I often type something the way it runs through my mind, but when I read it back, it seems far more harsh or arrogant than I would ever dare be, online or off. That's why you'll find a lot of edit lines on my posts and/or emoticons.:D When I'm tired or pressed for time, I'm not always as cautious about this as I would like to be. I have had several people who have gotten to know me in these forums tell me that they were surprised to hear on mic in chat how soft spoken I really am. :)

Sometimes even things said as a joke can be misunderstood and seen as being passive aggressive. I want to be more mindful of this.

Set a watch, O Lord before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3

This is something that has come to my attention recently. This is one of the thoughts that came to mind "Sometimes I wonder if people understand my sarcasm or do they just think I'm a moron?"

Sometimes I seriously wonder if people reading my replies pick up on my sarcasm or just write me off as another dingaling roaming the internet? I may never know unless somebody chimes in. :)

The world would be a better place if we all started using italics for sarcasm...

The joys of (mis) communication on the internet! Thank God for emoticons. I have been trying to be very mindful of wording to get my thought properly sent on my replies to other peoples threads, but sometimes wonder if my posts are relevant or obvious and people are like 'Duh!' after reading them. Haha. I think that communication is like sending a package to someone. You can only control how you send it through choice of word, and what message you're intending on sending to the person. But there is so much at play depending on the person who unpacks the message like how they are feeling about the topic or you, personal issues, being grumpy or tired. Stuff you can't really control, even if your trying to be mindful. My two cents. :)

I'm dreadful about tone....... I'll complain about something and not really think that it sounds critical but, like Jullianna said, it doesn't really sound like me the second time around.

Sometimes I wonder how people read me....I'm really curious actually :). I think people would be surprised if they meet me in person. Which is good??? I think :D. I'll start adding clarifications like *read with a mexican accent*, *read with a fake american accent*, *read with a sarcastic tone while smiling*. Sometimes I should add *being immature on purpose*.....

It sounds right in my head. Understand my mind! I don't want to explain it to you!

Sure, here in the forums a large part of communication is lost because of the loss of vocal inflection and body language, but I do think that there are those who will take offense no matter how "properly" you phrase your post. In my opinion unless something is blatantly rude or condescending, people should give the benefit of the doubt to the person who made the post. Especially when the person is well known and respected.

I tend to be relatively diplomatic both in real life and here (at least in my opinion), but even I get my share of "fan" mail related to forum posts.
