I came up with this idea while watching a tv commerical about a new toothbrush by oral b or whoever, and I thought to myself "really? is it really necessary to come out with yet another 'improvement' on a toothbrush?' Go down any drugstore isle and you will see like 50 different types of toothbrushes, hey whats one more? SOOOOO, what do think?~ What is something, a product, ad or whatever that makes you think, 'what were they thinking!?', 'is that really necessary?!'. I am assuming that I am not the only one who thinks these things.

Depends on the invention. There is such thing as actual optimization, and that can be a wonderful thing!

For those of use who actually care about our teeth...

Gambling/casino ads always make me think 'is that really necessary.' Not quite the same thing as your toothbrush. But really now, some of us care about our teeth! ;)

Hey now, I care about my teeth. Just sayin...seems like they come up with a new one every 6 months.

Hmm maybe I am the only one that thinks these things, oh well the thread can die.

salt-free saltines...the point is?

Seriously? Those are real? Makes as much sense as a cheese-free cheeseburger.

arwen83, I usually am more surprised at how commercials convey things. Like paper towel commercials, for example. They show a dog tracking mud through the house and kids knocking over drinks and the mom's all like, "Oh you! ;)" and then she happily cleans it up. When my kitten knocks stuff over, I'm like, "...WHAT HAVE YOU DONE."

It's just stuff like that that makes me raise my eyebrow and laugh.

Okay here's another one... the commercial plays on people's fear of germs. They portray how disgusting touching the soap dispenser pump is, and to buy their hands free dispenser. But the thing is after you touch the pump, you clean your hands anyways... so....

Yeah. Same thing with products that play into an irrational fear of dust mites.

Oh, help! We're all gonna die! We might have benign, invisible creatures in our pillowcases!

Or you're a horrible mother if you aren't protecting your children from the evil monster germs that are attacking your children!

Yes! Don't touch that shopping cart until you've performed a ceremony that looks like you're worshiping it and presenting it with an offering of Purel.

Well it makes perfect sense to me! Once you get one of these, you have to buy an automatic faucet and automatic paper towel dispenser before you can really get clean on your way out of the WC. Hmmm, I wonder who makes something like that!? Oh and don't forget to kick all doors open, or you might waste all of the other automation. :)

chocolate syrup with calcium (duh), I also had a friend whose wife worked at a diner and said we would be surprised at how many people, rather than ordering a cheeseburger, or bacon cheeseburger, order a plain hamburger with cheese and bacon.

You'd be surprised what else, aside from calcium, chocolate syrup contains...or they're just trying to advertise that 'see its healthy, it contains calicum!' Also, food that advertise that its made from 'real fruit'....so all this time I was eating artificial fruit? (i realize that it artificial flavoring, but sounds so weird). I can just picture someone from the 1800's reading a label and being astounded that in the future, they have to advertise if what people are eating is real lol *mind-blown*

Its just because its neato to watch the soap come out like magic. :D

I will say, though, that I tend to be an advertiser's dream when it comes to colors.

Example: Regular Oreos are amazing, but I don't buy them often. But when it's spring and the icing is yellow, or when it's Christmas and the icing is red, I snatch those off the shelf without a second thought simply because of their awesome icing color.

Another example is when my grandma got me a box of hot chocolate packets with rainbow marshmallows; I may or may not have overreacted with glee. :D

The ads i hate are any ad that feels the need to personify lung phlegm. I mean, do we really need to watch little green boogers in your lungs packing up for a vacation? I can't even look at those commercials.

Yes! Someone who gets it.
